Our recruiting seems to be constipated this cycle. Any idea why this is the case and what could be the laxative we need to get things moving?

I think it's a combination of poor planning and being picky. We could have more kids in this class right now if we wanted to but the staff wants to wait it out. They are being very deliberate in putting together their board and I think that's for two reasons. 1. It's a small class and they don't want to miss or take kids early if they could have better prospects later. 2. Like posted in other threads, I think the staff is really confident in the upcoming season which will help with point one.

It has been increasingly frustrating in the short term but like stated above I expect things to pick up at and after II. There are a few guys that I think we can close around that time period. One being Studstill who I'd be ecstatic to land.

Post of the week. Exactly. You don't sell your stock in Q1 & Q2 when you know you are going to have a great Q3 and Q4.

Is Storm really that much of a Debbie Downer or just the most subtle troll in history? The next positive thing out of his mouth, will be his first.

Well he won't be confused with some of the guys in the NBC-ND comments section that folllow Arnold but I guess he has perfected an annoying style that keeps him from getting banned.

As I used to message people on the boards I owned. Our memberships are based on simple math... Add or be subtracted.

... short memories, fellas. A VERY few years ago it was typical that we'd have one, two, or three commitments now and nothing would break till august. I believe that one year we had one OLineman early and nothing else.

Just to follow up on my original post and the MSU references, I would much rather have Studstill in June than Lyke in May.

I'd be more concerned with this class if it weren't for the staff's efforts with the class of 2017. We've already identified a lot of the 2017 guys we want and gotten them to campus. That foresight indicates to me that we've got a plan in place and the current slowdown isn't something the staff is overly concerned about. If we start out hot we'll start getting interest from guys we're not even contemplating at this point, and if we beat USC then God only knows what kind of talent we could pull.

I feel like we have this conversation every season at some point or another. Dudes, the class will be filled. Relax. II didn't even happen yet.

By "we" do you mean Notre Dame or Michigan State?

I am not a MSU fan at all. It annoys me that they have eclipsed us as a program. Its not trolling. It's a fact. They have won 11 games in four of the last 5 years. We have won 11 games once in the last 5 years. They are winning rose and cotton bowls. We are winning pinstripe.and music city bowls.

I don't say these things gleefully. I say them to illustrate how our program has fallen behind regional powers now as well as national powers. Some things need to change or its Ivy league time.

If "falling behind a rival" equates to beating them 4 out of the last 5 times, and absolutely HUMILIATING them in 3 of those games, I'll gladly "fall behind" other teams as well. We can't all have 2 game seasons in the B1G can we?

*Edit: I'm an idiot for taking the bait. This guy is clearly an MSU troll.

So ND basketball has surpassed Carolina as a basketball program?

What do they have to show for it? A loss to ND in 2013 that killed any chance of them getting to the NC. A loss in 2012 when ND went to the NC, a beatdown in South Bend during the 2011 season.. They are a regional power. They've had a good run at turning 3 star guys into NFL players. Cook leaves this year and next year will be a backslide. Zaire is here for 3 years and the Irish are set. Stanford had the same run a few years ago and they are back to being just a good team again. Sparty will suffer the same fate.

So what they are having a little luck with midwest guys EARLY in the cycle. ND wins no less than 10 games and still beats their class. Bet.

When the sun rises tomorrow the Yankees will still the Yankees, the Patriots will still be the Patriots and ND will still be ND.

You brought in so many different sports metaphors I am dizzy and my head hurts. But I agree with your sentiment.

But what I think is funny is that Kelly went into detail describing why and how small this class was going to be, and how they were not going to push to fill up early, and many are still crapping pavers.

While this is true in the big picture, they are missing or falling behind on guys that they really want. Robertson, King, Mack, Corley, and Kareem are all guys they want right now. Maybe better put this way, no reason to jump off a bridge but DEFINITELY not going according to plan as of now.

I would respectfully like to not be grouped in with a majority of your thoughts because I come out on the other side of most of your posts, that I've read.

I didn't lump you into anything. I simply agreed with your post. If you are cool with 8 win seasons 4 out of 5 years then have at it. I expect a little more and have no shame expressing these thoughts and expectations.

I'm sure it has more to do with the balance MSU has with academics and athletics too. Sorry, don't know how to italics on phone

So the general consensus by most posters on here is Sparty is a crap team with crap players in a crap league that has no business in the same D1 level as ND?

I wouldn't go that far, but when your best stretch in school history is pockmarked by 4 out of 5 losses to the very team you are arguing MSU "eclipsed," then I don't know what to tell you.

Semantics :

The cynic in me wants to ask how much actual success in recent recruiting efforts (for Big 10 schools, etc.,) has to do with better and more prolific bag men. (Cynic, the guy who smells the roses, and looks around for the funeral.)

Does anyone really know what is going on? On one hand, at ND you have a coaching staff that is growing in a dynamic way, and on the other you have a group of seventeen year old kids from all kind of backgrounds, from all over the country. Granted some really are men among boys, but others?

I believe strongly that the Kelly staff will take a risk, or go for a five-star, but the staff is doing all it can to avoid the kind of recruit that has cost this program dearly over the last six years.

You can debate for hours who these players are. I don't care; not a bit about gossip, or conjecture. And sometimes it isn't even about bad blood, and is nothing more than a lack of team centered effort and leadership.

I believe that recruiting is a marathon, and early contact, but not forcing early commitment is the best play.

Some people remind me of 75 year old ladies addicted to slot machines. They know the odds of winning are extremely low, but expect bells and horns every other pull.

The staff has a plan and has done a great job. I'll wait to see where the chips fall.

It's quite simple really. MSU has taken the spot in the Big Ten that was occupied by the maize and blew. Meanwhile, ole UM has fallen to where Sparty was. Nothing else has really changed.

This thread is somewhat hilarious given I was just thinking last week - we need to slow down and save room for top talent to jump on board when we whoop some arse this fall. Six commits this time of year would be a lot for us if we were taking 25, let alone this year when we are taking a lot less than that.

And Sparty, I much prefer their success to UM. Helps that we have whooped up on them lately. There was that stretch from mid 90s to mid 00s that they frustratingly beat us regularly though.

Some of you act like if a 7 win team beats an 11 win team during the regular season than they are the better program. It just means that one team was better than the other on that particular day. I look at the entire body of work.

And for those who think the big ten is so weak, didn't we just lose to Northwestern last season? Hasn't lowly Purdue given us all we can handle lately? 11 wins in 4 out of 5 years. Rose Bowl and Cotton bowl victories. That's not smoke and morrors. I don't care as much about head to head victories as much as season records. I'll bet the recruits don't either at the end of the season.

Sounds good, we hear you loud and clear. Your opinion is MSU is a great program and ND is not. Over and out.
