I know a lot of people here aren't... but I'm a big Mike Brey fan. I wasn't always, but he's evolved as a coach and is a downright good guy.

Huge Brey fan. His recruiting is just going to get better. Last class with Burgett, Auguste, and Biedschied was really good. This 2013 one could potentially be even better if they can real in Jackon and Washington.

love brey. i just would like to see a bit more than 7 man rotation with spread out minutes. maybe we wouldnt be so gassed after a grueling big est season/tourney then the show.

he definitely deserves an extension. and i'm very happy he's willing to stick around!

Awesome. We need another top-25 year and recruiting class, and this program will be rolling.

His problem is that Crean is going to snatch every top player in Indiana that he wants. They were oversigned by one this past class and STILL almost got Gary Harris as gravy to go with an already top 5 class.

Does Notre Dame play Indiana again this year?

There is currently one player from Indiana on the roster. Same as football, Brey isn't limited to Indiana for recruiting so your point is moot.

No they play Purdue.

And to Clashmore's point, ND doesn't really recruit Indiana.

I really see this as a lifetime contract for Brey. He will retire at Notre Dame and won't coach anywhere else.

I used to not like him, but his strategic brilliance has shown itself the last few years. Now I honestly feel that he's the best option for Notre Dame.

Until the NBA changes it's eligibility from one to three years--and it's likely that this could happen--Notre Dame will always been a step below the elites. Only a coach like Brey can give the Irish a legitimate shot at something special.

ND beat out Indiana for VJ Beachem and leads for the best player in Indiana for 2013, Demetrius Jackson.

Coach Brey has done what ND hired him to do...win, graduate players, get to the tournament. Granted, there have been disappointments, but the program is in good hands with Mike Brey.

Excellent point, I love Coach Brey, I will use the oft stated: "he gets Notre Dame" and has done a great job with the program. Really glad to hear this.

I wish Indiana had room for him but he doesn't have an actionable offer. They are saving the last spot for Beejay Anya. Basically, Indiana is recruiting the top Indiana prospects, particularly Indiana Elite and A-Hope, the D.C/Baltimore area due to Coach Phillips connections there and an elite midwest target here and there that the staff really covets.

BJ Beachem is a fine player but the Hoosiers 2012 class, '13 and '14 classes are sick, and not finished.

He's a good coach, his players graduate, they rarely get in any trouble off the court, and they're generally competitive during the regular season. While I hate the perennial first-round Tournament upsets, I can't think of another coach that can do better that would actually come to ND and play within our restrictions. I just hope he can make it to the Elite 8 at least once every five years or so.

I appreciate Brey. I hope -

1) With more talent walking in the door, hopefully he can play 8 deep more comfortably.

2) Learn from the burn! My biggest gripe early in his career was pace. Why the hell were we trying to run everyone off the court when we were one of the least athletic teams in the Big East (and only played 6 or 7 deep). Even with more talent, there is tremendous value in controlling the pace of the game.

3) Team first. In the past we have relied too much on the #1 guy. The last few years (really since Gody went down) the entire team has played with more energy and I think more effectively. Apparently unleashing the whole team is better for recruiting than leaning so heavily on a go-to guy who pads incredible stats.

4) I hope Brey has learned that defense is a big deal. Playing 6 deep while holding the ball for 5 seconds max on offense makes defense almost impossible. A deeper bench and holding on to some burn elements will allow us to play more tenacious D.

I am not sold that Brey will not revert to run and gun tendencies with an NBAish focus on defense. I am sold that he can coach at ND as long as he wants. He has earned that much. My criticisms are constructive now, five years ago not so much.

So much for all the "Fire Brey" chants. I was very happy to hear about this, and am even more so after listening to the presser.

One interesting thing was all the love Jack and Mike both gave to the Big East. It didn't sound like they were going anywhere else, but it could have also been "that fair kiss goodnight".

Blessings to Coach Brey. Fans here in Mountaineer country are amazed that Notre Dame has such a terrific coach, and it's not jealousy as WVU has one of the best. My brother, a WVU grad and a Mountaineer basketball junkie, just shakes his head at how Brey can make adjustments with the talent he has. From our foxhole we often don't have the perspective required to see how greatly admired our coach is.

Now I'll add something more controversial: I've said before on this site that general excellence can be maintained through regular seasons with great coaching and disciplined smart players. When it's tournament time, all those animalistic Rolls Royce's on those other teams [types of players who often don't bother going to classes, so we don't get] stop taking plays off in games and reach down to the bottom of their talent wells and LOOK OUT Here It Comes!!!

Notre Dame MIGHT someday be able to survive the onslaught that then happens during tournament time, but it will take a team filled with unusual "street toughness" to do it. I thought that the Ben Hansbrough team might have enough toughness [because of him and Nash], but they weren't quite enough. Last year's team was typical "nice disciplined boys" ND Basketball with probably only Scott Martin rising to the necessary level of fury and toughness when the heat turned up.

What I'm talking about is not slick scoring but the testosterone-ramp-up aggression which you can see manifest when some guy looks you in the eye and says: by damm you're not going to beat ME!! And then rips the ball out of the air whether the other guy is there or not. If you've played a lot of ball, you know what that is. Anyway, that's my eye-test on ND BBall for some time now, and I cannot give any of the blame about that to the Coach. He does miracles with what he has, and the schedule we play.
