I will put my two cents out there...
Last year we were a time of possession and protect the football type of team. Limit the opportunities the other team has by keeping the ball out of their hands. We were able to operate this way because we had a quarterback that could sustain drives by converting third and intermediates with his legs or arm. This by itself allowed us to win time of possession. Also, a mobile quarterback can limit some unnecessary throws by making plays with his legs, which results in less forced throws.
This is neither the coaches fault, or Tommy's, but rather what our identity as a team is this year. Watching the game, I couldn't help but feel as though Michigan looked eerily similar to us last year, with Golson at the helm.
1. Defense seems to be vanilla unless there is a dire need to make a play. I don't quite understand the thought that the offense needs to come out fast and put points on the board, but the defense comes out bend but don't break. I feel as if we should be coming out firing on both sides of the ball no matter the position on the field.
2. Linebackers for the most part are a downgrade from last year, which should be expected. Athleticism needs to be on the field, and I like that Grace brings that to the table.
3. Dline has a lot on their plate this year, which constitutes a little more responsibility. I feel their play can step as the season progresses, but they are still very good at stopping conventional run plays.
4. Lastly, our offense is capable of moving the ball between the twenties, but stiffens up in the red zone. It is the exact opposite of our defensive philosophy, whereas when we get in the red zone our play calling doesn't seem to change much. Would like to see some different looks in the red zone on offense, with some aggressive runs to the edge.
Just my thoughts.
