tate needs to grow up. i dont want to see him talking every single time he makes a play. there is no place for that crap.

How old are you? It sounds like you are one of those alumni guys that fans complain about at the stadium that wants everyone to sit down

Thats called swagger homey. Tate plays with passion and it show. I dont mind a lil sawagger as long as it doesnt cross into stupid penalties. As long as he keeps making plays, keep doing the superman pose. I LOVE IT.

The hands on the hips and the stance while lingering over the defender was a taunt. You don't have to vocalized.

For those complaining about ND fans mentioning it, recogonize that the first week of the season announcers mentioned the change in regulations and that the NCAA has stress the purpose was to encourage sportsmanship and minimize or eliminate the trash talk and taunts. They stressed the refs were told to call it tight.

The fact that you may have cut your teeth with Vince McMahon and think it's cool is irrelevant. The refs across the country called taunting a bunch of times across the natino on Saturday.

Tate can get his jolly's handing the ball to the end zone after he crosses the goal line.

oh i realize hes taunting. i'm just saying i cant see them making the call without him vocalizing. just my opinion.

Now that i have settled i can actually make rational observations.

Bad:
- The d has got to learn to tackle. They are killing me on some of these plays.

- Forced to settle for FG's way too much, this game could have been over at the half.

- Too many turnovers

Good:
- Jimmy Heisman and Golden f--kin Tate

- The o-line has played great all year and no stupid penalties either, great job by those guys.

-Robert Hughes has really steped up the last two weeks. He refuses to go down.

- The D overal played much better. Manti Te'o played great and Brian Smith was more efective today. KLM is getting better each week. Kerry Neal might have had the bestgame of his career

- We got a kicker now!!!! Nick Tausch was great

Clausen confirmed what we have seen every week...continued playing at a high level, consistant from week to week.

The offensive line...i'm almost starting to believe; as in, im almost coming to expect them to play well every week now.

The defense....from the 10 to the 10 yard line, they cant stop Fontana High School. But at the goalline, they look like the 85 bears...wtf? (makes me think that was a result of UW play calling..what did they do different at the goalline? whatever they did, it didnt work for them)

This was a good win, going into a bye week with Pete the Cheat and his crew of misfits coming to town in 2weeks.

there is no better time than now to beat these bastids

Pretty much nailed it!

Outside of the D, I'm a'little concerned that a #2 WR hasn't really stepped up yet, I've no doubt USC will be all over Tate like a rash, regardless of where he lines up or motions too.
Rudi will no doubt play his part, but can we do enough?

I'm just glad we have an extra week to prepare for USC, it's gonna take every wrinkle in CW's playbook to stay toe 2 toe with these guys.

USC is going to attempt to abuse our corners like rented mules. i hope we can come up with a scheme to help them out b/c there is no shot walls and blanton can survive alone against the trojans. i guess the solution is somehow force barkley into poor/rushed decisions. we can't keep giving up 30 or more points every game and expect to keep pulling it out. the final drive by UW was disturbing, although that was a bs and fkn late call on sergio. i was disturbed by the long pass in blanton's mug though. he knocks that down we win in regulation, however, i did like seeing our quick score and our d burying locker and ultimately the fkn stick on that UW receiver!

My liver can not take any more of these close games.

Negatives:

Secondary can not cover anyone. Walls has been awful all year. I'm ready for Gary Gray to get a start. Blanton, who a lot of people have been praising this year, has taken a step back in my opinion. On Washington's last drive in regulation on the long 3rd down play, he was in perfect position to swat that ball away and he never jumped nor made any attempt at the ball. It was almost as if he lost track of the receiver, who cut right in front of him and made the catch. He needs to go up and SWAT the ball away!

Who and where was our 3rd linebacker today? It seemed like Te'o and Brian Smith were all over the field, but I didn't see our 3rd LB do anything throughout the entire game (with the exception of Toryan's great tackle on Locker during the miracle goal line stand).

Game would have been a blowout had we been able to score some TD's instead of getting FG's. Washington would not have been able to come from behind. Seemed like each play was stalled by 1 dumb play...Berger's false start on 3rd and 1, Parris drop in the end zone on a perfectly thrown ball, Jimmy throwing into triple coverage to Rudolph when Tate was wide open at the 1st down stick, etc. If we limit those mistakes, this game would not have even been close.

Positives:

How has nobody recognized Kerry Neal's play in the second half / overtime? He made some big plays and needs to get recognized for it.

Ethan Johnson and KLM had a coming out party. Ethan got constant pressure on the QB and made some big hits. Got flagged for one late hit, but I'm sure that Locker was looking out for #9 after that play.

Offensive Line played in my opinion the best all around game of any of their careers. Great to see no holding penalties on Sam Young. There were a few occasions where they got beat, but the difference today was that they did not make a dumb hold and the result was that Jimmy was able to sidestep the defender and make the play. You have to trust the QB sometimes.

Hughes stepped up again when Allen went down. I'd like to see more of him even if Allen is healthy. I think CW could have used Hughes more in the first half when everyone could tell that AA was huffing and puffing. Hughes would not have allowed that pass to go through his hands that AA did that ended up getting picked off. Hopefully AA is back for USC, but if he isn't, I have confidence in Hughes.

Thought Shaq Evans played a good game, showing the ability to get open and make a play even when he was initially covered. Also made some nice blocks. I say he starts against USC.

Tausch was awesome. Not only did he nail each kick, but they were perfect. Each kick seemed to go straight through. There was no doubt.

If I remember correctly, Turk only had 1 punt, but it looked like a nice one. Haven't seen the stats, but looked like 45 yards or so.

Three other guys I want to recognize are Sam Cowart, Braxton Cave and whomever s our FG holder. Playing in awful conditions, their special team snaps were good and the holds were perfect. It's great to have confidence in our kicking game.

Bring on USC. I, for one, am ready.

Edit: I forgot to mention Clausen and Tate's monster games. Those kids are special and I am proud to have them on my team!

The secondary is terrible. I would love to see Gary Gray start. When Locker went deep to the endzone, Gray had perfect coverage and forced the incompletion. Darrin Walls is really, really bad. Almost every time you see a big completion, Darrin Walls is the one getting burned. Harrison Smith has shown flashes, but I don't think he's made the transition yet from linebacker to safety. Robert Blanton is on a downturn, right now. He got torched on a deep ball that Locker overthrew.

Turk's punt was 39 yards. Could have been much better, but it's better than Maust's 25 yarders.

Bobby Brown didn't vocalize when he made his sign to his fraternity buddies. Still drew a flag.

Arnez Battle scored a TD early in FSU '02 game and made a Tomahawk Chop sign to the crowd. Drew a flag.

Many other examples yesterday that had the talking heads shaking their heads in amazement.

The point is the NCAA has a made taunting an issue this year. It's not our call about swagger, celebration, whatever. Since the refs are calling it, you simply walk away and don't put your team in the position to get a flag.

i was disgusted watching the game today. i cant understand how a team so much more talented could possibly play down to poor competition. this was a team that didnt win last year. unacceptable.

manti teo is a monster. that kid was EVERYWHERE today, i have not seen a kid play all over the field like that in a long long time. he can do it all.

our dbs are terrible.

ryan can we PLEASE get him off the field, please please i beg of you.

clausen is impressing me. playing very very well right now. i dont know about heisman but playing very well.

this is a terribly average team. very frustrating.

did allen aggravate the injury?

why can we not block on special teams? we used to be so amazing at it, now its completely average.

does anyone know if that kid from washington who dropped the last pass is ok? he got completely knocked out looked like a tipped cow out there with his arms and legs sticking straight out.

i still feel as though charlie weis is not the man for the job.

tate needs to grow up. i dont want to see him talking every single time he makes a play. there is no place for that crap.

And I thought I was bitter about some of the game, after a day to reflect and think about things, Teo didn't start out that great yesterday, but he picked it up. UW is a team that didn't win a game last year, yes, but they are a team that didn't have Locker and Polk for much of last year, had they had them for a full season, I think they would have won some games, however, Ty just wasn't the coach for them or for anyone for that matter. I've complained about Ryan as well that but I thought he played well for the most part yesterday. I think the D is starting to figure out how to get to the QB. This is the first time in years that I can remember a goal line stand from our D, let alone 3 of them. I agree about our DB's, though, they can't seem to cover people at times, especially Walls, that year off has really put him behind. Gray did a nice job yesterday, I thought.

Bottom line, I think we're gettin better, but still have a ways to go. Great job by the OL yesterday, as they've done all year long, Jimmy is the real deal, I like how he goes out and throws for over 400 yds. and gets zero love from anybody in the press, all I've heard today has been Jacory Harris, Tim Tebow, and Sam Bradford, and two of those QB's didn't play yesterday. SAD!!

Yeah, it could have been better, but I was pretty pleased with his punt. True freshman, first game experience, nailbiter of a game, shitty weather??? With all those factors, I will take him just getting the ball away clean and downfield a bit let alone a decent 39 yards.

Tausch was huge last night - responsible for 17 points. Turk had a good debut. Cowart - well, we never hear his name called so he must be doing something really right. I know people were critical of using three schollies on kickers and a long snapper, but those pickups are proving their worth very early in their careers.

given that tate will game-planned for; maybe CW involves Allen (if not injured) more in the passing game, while keeping hughes doing the running. that would put tate, #2 wr, Rudy, Allen as viable pass targets, while keeping hughes as a running threat. Of course, tate is involved in the running game as well. If the Oline plays as well as expected (haha), then Mr. Clausen can state his case for heisman hype with a win against USC. Obviously, if Clausen beats USC, the heisman hype will go into full swing.

These are collage kids, not pros.
I think the team played their hearts out, especially in the forth (and fifth quarter). How abut that sack in OT!!!
The OL and DL were terrific. And Hughes.
It was a real team win.
I wish Jimmy could run; it is so important in the collage game.
Tate reminds me of Rocket I; Why not Golden and Theo on kickoffs?
Is there any reason why they can't block on special teams?
Who is the coach for special teams anyway? (I know who it is; this question is rhetorical.)

I know what you're saying and clearly the Battle thing was going to be an obvious flag. I'm just saying whenever Tate does it he puts his hands on his hips and looks at the guy (or the ref if hes waiting for a pass interfernce call lol). I could see it getting called in a real chippy game but unless the refs are real nitpicky I don't see them calling it. Just seems like they have more to worry about...such as roughing the snapper penalties

Scott Smith was in there on a few plays. Fleming was hurt but he should be ready for USC. Also saw Filer make a play

Still one of my favorite plays. He also cut the throat after the tomaahawk. That might have contributed

Our secondary seems to be playing without confidence. Like they are waiting for something to happen. I don't know if you can coach that up. The only cure is a big play.

I don't know man. McCarthy shows up every game. He really is in the right places to make plays. A win against USC would be the biggest confidence builder our secondary could create. Our defense still hasn't evolved to having a signature. We can't keep giving up third and long conversions without hurting our confidence.

The biggest opportunity for a confidence booster is a freshman quarterback. If we get a couple of picks against USC...their confidence will skyrocket.

I wish we'd get away from the giant cushions, and play more physical with our corners. If they're going to give up huge chunks of yard anyway, at least try to cause a couple of incompletions along the way. I realize we'll probably get burned big a couple of times, but something's gotta change.

Our DB's need to start playing the ball more. We miss alot of int opportunities. Also the safety's are way too slow to react on the long ball and offer help. McCarthy and Smit should be darting in at full speed to knock these passes down or intercept them. They are good tacklers but average at best pass defenders.

I believe - and I have no credibility - that with Manti flying around, KPL stepping up, and Neal showing up - the secondary gets confidence in the guys in front of them and they tighten up the second half of the season.

Maybe I missed other people talking about this, but I watched the Washington game again. Did anyone notice, on the very last play in overtime, where the Wash. receiver was knocked out - there was a second receiver a few yards behind him that was all alone that I actually think the pass was intended for. The pass was high for the receiver in front which caused him to have to elevate to get it and exposed himself to McCarthy and Smith. If he had let the pass go, I think the receiver behind him would have scored.

Shoulda, woulda, coulda...

Thank goodness he tried to be the hero and then got his bell rung!

Hughes 2 Point Conversion

Hughes 2 Point Conversion

There is no way it couldve been reversed even with replay. I watched the best angle in 1/15th speed about 10 times and I couldnt conclusively see anything. I couldnt even pair Hughes legs with his upper body there were so many in that pile.

I think he was possibly down a half yard or so short but you cannot conclusively overturn that call.

I first heard about this on one of the late night recap shows (can't remember which channel), and it is still the only broadcast that brought it up. They said something like "smells like some home cookin'".

I remember thinking two things:
1) there is no way that was conclusive because you couldn't see EXACTLY whose leg it was even if Hughes was the most likely...also, it wasn't until then that I noticed it and no other anouncers did either...and
2) if we were on the plus end of an official's call, then that would be for about the first (at most second) time this season!

Yes, I definitely saw this too when I went back to watch the game a second time- the second receiver was staring down that pass the whole way, I am almost positive it was intended for him and not the guy who almost caught it. Either way, it would seem that one of them ran an incorrect route, otherwise why would they both end up one in front of the other like that? Oh well, TOO damn bad!! Irish win!!!

Exactly! and not only that, but if this was a case of "home cookin'" as they so idiotically put it, how do you explain a complete BS "roughing the snapper" penalty that essentially was intended to GIVE WASHINGTON THE GAME!!! Come on now....PAH---LEASE!!! Home cookin?? That is such a crock. ND NEVER, and I mean NEVER gets the benefit of any favoritism from the officials. In fact, when it comes to the refs, you can't even USE the term "home cookin'" because, let's face it, we HAVE no home!!! We are not in a conference, so in every game we play, when it comes to the refs, we are really home-less.

i thought it was proven after the fact (mainly the game) that his foot was out of bounds....or were you being facitious???

i'm not a good judge of funny versus serious, or was it obvious and i didn't catch it.....

you want me to wait for it to come around.....? i'm patient, i'm sure i'll catch it.
