Post Game Observations (Stanford)....

Disappointed in the outcome, because we had chances to win. Yes, team hung in there. But I really got the sense that Stanford was in control of the game throughout, and that it was their game to lose. Can't throw 2 int on last 2 possessions....and the overturned int was another crappy pass. TR was always best as an off the bench guy.

The frustrating thing for me is how Stanford could get so much out of their players. Aside from Montgomery, which Stanford offensive skill player could start for us. I can't think of one.

On defense, I can't think of a front seven player that I would be willing to switch. The secondary is a no brainer. I would switch our secondary for their secondary...with only Russell being a tough decision.

Yet, they controlled the game.

Why would Russell be a tough decision? The sky is the limit with that kid. Automatic keep, imo.

No, Hogan would not start over Rees. Rees, scary that I am typing this, seems to have a better accurate arm than Hogan. Hogan is a little more mobile than Rees which doesn't say much. When Farley can tackle you in the open field, you really are not mobile.

Not a big Skov fan; but you are right, I would make the trade.

Hogan was certainly inconsistent in his throws, but he is quite a bit more mobile than TRees.

Hyperbole much?

No one ever said that they were happy with mediocrity.

I'll try to use small words, and speak slow, to try to explain my position on the subject:

I think that the goal should be double digit wins, every year. But there's a difference between goals and expectations. Goals are what you hope will happen over the course of the season, and are possibilities. Expectations are what you expect to happen. In other words, what is not only possible, but likely. The likelihood of winning 10+ games changes from year to year, based on the strength of your schedule, your strengths, and your weaknesses. Notre Dame SHOULD have elite talent every year, but they don't. Some kids just don't pan out; Sam Young, Terrail Lambert, or James Aldridge. So, if you are setting realistic expectations, you have to take into account how players are performing, or not performing. You can't just go off of recruiting class rankings, and say, "We have elite talent on the field, because of our recruiting class rankings." When I look at playing Stanford, at Stanford, with Tommy Rees at QB instead of Everett Golson, I figure that the odds of ND winning that game are lower than with EG. So my expectations are that we will probably lose, but it sure as hell doesn't mean that I am happy about it. Take Louis Nix out of the equation, and my odds on us winning that game drop even more precipitously.

Got about as far as that and stopped reading. I don't disrespect people on this board, and for some odd reason you do regularly lately. Your response to someones post, or when you quote a post and react, always have to include a belittling or dismissive statement. I come on this board for the enjoyment of a community of ND fans, even tho they may not always share the same opinion. For some reason there are a few on here lately that feel the need to exert their dominance on the rest of us. Obviously it isn't working. I quoted your post as an example, you sure aren't the only one. With the large community here there are bound to be several different opinions on any and every topic. A discussion of those differences, and occasionally a dispute, is expected. But the repeated attacks on other posters when they don't share the same opinion is pathetic.

I agree Irish (in)Sanity!

FLDomer had a brilliant take on human nature, and there were a couple of other good posts, and Pachuco answered a question asked earlier about Hogan. But other than that there hasn't been a whole lot to make me feel like I spent my time well looking through the last page or so. Funny how that happens with certain combinations of individuals. (Not one person, or another, but several people together, and a sort of critical mass.)

If it had to be a packaged deal. Otherwise, I agree with you.

Ok, thanks for the clarification, though I wouldn't make that trade. I can own up to my bias in that our players are our players. In terms of experience, it was a very young (and incomplete) secondary out there. Farley had a tough year living up to the high hopes placed on him based on the solid job he did last year. I really think the shift in performance of the secondary starts with the underwhelming performance of our linebacking unit. I'm not making excuses for Farley or anyone else, but it's more than just a question of ability. We've had a tough time adjusting all year to the absence of Manti, Spond, Grace, Councell, and Motta. My only wish was to see Redfield get more experience, but the coaches see something that I don't and are bringing him along in the way they see fit. I don't have to fully agree with their decision (and I don't), but I know there is a reason and I respect that aspect.

Hogan 12-18

Rees 16- 34

I wasn't comparing his accuracy with TRees, just pointing out that he is clearly more mobile. I also think he had some pretty bad throws to go with his completions, but the stats won't completely reflect that.

He is pretty mobile for his size. I misunderstood your comment sorry.

Who did I attack in my post? No one. If you took it personally, then that is on you, not me. I said what I said because this topic has been oft debated, and still..... I am either not doing a very good job of conveying my opinion, or some people are just refusing to hear what is being said, and making up their own meaning.

Like you weren't being condescending with this comment?

You mean even the players had high expectations. I thought those were to be adjusted season by season depending upon the changing circumstances of our program. I mean, thats what so many were trying to say has to happen not to far back. I'm glad the players aren't happy with mediocrity when some of the fans are.

But the fact that you didn't bother to read the rest of my post tells me how interested you are in having a serious discussion on the topic.

No worries, man. I get what you were trying to point out. Hogan presented some advantages (particularly his up the middle runs), and though not overly impressive, he did just enough to be QB on the winning side. The offensive calling for Stanford was questionable at times, particularly on the BJax interception.

Love you, man...but "speak slowly" and "use small words" are not exactly subtle code phrases intended to call other people stupid.

Maybe that wasn't your intention...

I'm still not seeing this as a confirmed game on our schedule. I know that there is a lot of talk about it and the ACC would like to see it, but until its a contracted game, I don't know if it will happen. Also, if it did happen, doesn't that mean that the Rice game is off of the schedule?

Latest buzz if that the ACC is letting Notre Dame drop one of the five games, Wake Forest.

That's still just buzz though, correct? Has it been confirmed anywhere that we would even want to do it?

I personally hope we don't. We have enough landmines.

Yes the five ACC games have basically been confirmed.

No, I mean has it been confirmed that they would let us drop Wake? Otherwise, the FSU game doesn't happen, correct?

Also, is this someting that has mutual interest or did the ACC just offer it?

It's sad because the schedule becomes infinitely more manageable with no ASU and Wake instead. Really can't believe we couldn't get out of that ASU game. One of the very few mistakes Jack made in his tenure is not having an easy out clause in that contract.

They're "letting" us drop Wake Forest so we can play Florida State? That's big of them.

I don't get what you mean. Are you saying that it's not a positive for them to let us play FSU (which I agree with) or that they don't have the power to tell us what ACC teams we play. Because they certainly have a contract that allows them to decide that.

I don't have much to add other than what's already been said:

- I was impressed with OL. They've had a great year.

- Folston is the real deal.

- Tommy had a bad game, and his underthrows really hurt.

- I was impressed with the WRs getting separation from the secondary. With a better QB, we would have had some really big plays in this game.

- I thought Day played best when inside.

- Probably the best offensive play calling we've had this year IMO. First game I can remember from this year where I didn't have a problem with play calling.

- With Golson, we beat them. And I think finish 11-1.

- Let's hope Tuitt comes back!

I just watched the full game. Alot of comments were pretty spot on from everyone else already.

- Farley has no business starting.
- As I've said all year, I cannot wait until Fox and Calabrese are gone.
- Folston should get 20+ carries in the bowl game.
- I cannot wait until Golson is back under center.
- Jarron Jones looks like the real deal.
- Butler got chewed out by Kelly like whoa!!! I watched the play like 5 times in slow-mo. Kelly had to see something other than I saw.
- I hope Daniels gets his understanding of the playbook better next season. Alot of talent, head isn't all the way there yet.

While its never good to see ND lose. They atleast played to the point that they couldve won. Rees just struck again. Off to the pinstripe we go!!

1. A gif of Gaffney plowing through Farley (and Collinsworth?) to ice the game would suffice to sum up my post-game feelings. It was almost comical. What truly was comical was Farley deciding he didn't want to even attempt to tackle Wilkerson on the long TD run and sliding to his butt.

2. I'm excited to see Folston over the next few seasons. He did not always have a clear lane against a tremendous front seven, but he still found ways to get yards. Awesome to see that effort.

3. Tommy played amazing in the third quarter, then blew it in the fourth. Wasn't helped much by playcalling late either though. Usual stuff, no surprise.

4. The offensive line, even when it became "patchwork," was lights out. Really excited to see how dominant Heistand's unit will be in two years when the studs are all plugged in.

5. Romeo Is Burning is my favorite thing of the entire season maybe (love you, Gus Johnson). Davaris coining the District 12 Salute after TDs is a close second.

6. I have high hopes for the offense next season as long as our starting QB has a strong arm and good accuracy on the deep ball. Robinson will be a problem on the deep ball with his size, Fuller/Brown will be a problem on the deep ball with their speed, and Daniels will be an all-around problem. If a slot receiver emerges that can abuse the middle of the field, the offense could be REAAAALLLLLLYYYYYYYY good. That also depends on playcalling though.

If Nix was healthy, we probably win too. This was the game we needed him for the most. Jones played well, but there's no replacing a probable top 10 pick NT against a power running team.

LOL Farley looked like he was playing baseball. Really taught me to appreciate Zeke's physicality.

Farley's been playing with a severly injured shoulder throughout most of the season that will likely require surgery after the season.

Then he shouldn't be on the field. I blame the staff 100% for this nonsense.

If that's true, our other safeties must be absolutely atrocious. Which I don't believe is true. I believe Farley is injured, it explains how pathetic he has been on the field, but there's no way putting him out there at what appears to be 40% is better than putting out a healthy Redfield. Not to mention risking reinjury for Farley.
