Some very strange comments in places above which do not correspond to what actually happened in the game. But... here are a few of my own to add to the muddle:

1). Everett Golson seems like a case of VTs Tyrod Taylor in his first two years --- Taylor was spectacularly athletic, much WOW factor, but not polished nor therefore error-free. In fact he made mistakes quite frequently, sometimes his athleticism bailing him out; sometimes not. He, like Everett, didn't have the full sense of the college game. He was a cockier person than Everett and more difficult to coach, but despite personality differences, the two show similar on-field play ["decent"] and potential ["great"]. Neither Taylor nor Everett could throw an accurate long ball yet.

The bottomline is that we must not think that Everett is ready to do everything yet. He is "Taylor-Soph" not "Taylor-Senior". Kelly I think realizes this better than we do.

2]. Kelly was required to take Everett out of the game near the end of the second quarter because his helmet came off. NCAA rule. How people can miss this when it's mentioned clearly by both announcers boggles me. Rees then made several very good passes in a row to get us into field goal position [Mayock was in high praise of Tommy's gutty competence] which Brindza blew. Rees looked very calm and "professional" doing that. Kelly did a completely reasonable thing, and in my opinion this interlude gave Everett what he needed to get his act back together and be the offensive star of the crunchtime periods.

3]. We played the game without our Big Man-in-the-middle. Sure he was there some of the time, but not as many plays, and not full strength. Get used to what it will be like when Big Lou moves on. His ability to alter about half the plays that an opponent tries to run wasn't there except when he could reach down inside that big willpower he has and overcome. [I'd seriously consider giving him a second gameball]. Why, one idly thinks, did Manti have a punk game [for him anyway]? Maybe he had flu symptoms too, and I'll bet several did. But could it have had anything to do with a certain mountainous force not being in front of him messing the O-Line completely up?

4]. We won the game in many ways over and above the scoreboard. As BGIF said, Pitt's offense was mainly about four plays. On one of those plays a severely-hampered Matthias tried to compensate for his broken, cast-covered hand/wrist by shoulder tackling one of the best backs in the nation. It didn't work. Jabbering pseudo-fans immediately began calling him out as a loafer and a liability who should be benched, and incredibly still are, despite his injury being pointed out to them. Utter crazy Whack. What we didn't do was protect the ball. It was we who did the turnovers and we spread the blame: Everett, Tommy, Cierre, plus Brindza leaving 4 points on the field which ends the game in regulation.

5]. Re: "horrible" Kelly playcalling. Way over 500 yards of offense and over 30 first downs. Unbelievable comments. It is always possible to pick out a couple of plays and glibly say: well I sure wouldn't have called THAT, and forget about the other 100. Frankly I'm prayerfully happy that none of us has anything to do with playcalling.

6]. all week long I felt that we all were far too happy with ourselves. The atmosphere around everything seemed that, although a proper gameface was on, we had breathed our first sigh of relief, as if the Oklahoma win had finally proven that if we weren't unbeatable we were nearly so. We had arrived. Well, we are pretty darn good, but with Everett still at "Taylor-soph" stage, we are stuck with being a lunchbucket team who has to grind all week to then grind out a saturday win. That's not as much fun as being Oregon or KSU, but it's who WE are. Frankly, if we're healthy and going all-out lunchbucket, I like who we are, even with a not-quite-there-yet Everett. I remember what those VT teams looked like with the "Taylor-senior" version, and look forward to that in the future.

Well, let me say first I do not post much, but follow this board all the time. My post game impression is that I am very impressed with the players and the coaching staff at this point. The players did not quit. The Coaching staff did not quit. I am not sure how much of the team was affected (or Infected) with the flu, but i do have a feeling it was more than any of us will ever know. The physical conditioning of this team is the best that I have seen.

The team did come out flat, they did not play well in the first half. Pitt did not come out flat and played well. ND fought thru the situation they put themselves in and got a victory. To me, that is impressive. I would, like I am sure most ND fans would, prefer a 40 point rout, but I will take the Win.

I have been a fan for forty years or so, and I will say that as I watch this team, and watch the coaching staff, I feel good about the direction they are going for the first time in a long time.

After a shaky first few games, the O-line has been pretty solid, thankfully.

Surprised we don't have this thread up yet.

* Everett Golson is the man.

* Theo Riddick continues to ball. Tough, tough runner and a fine receiver.

* Cierre Wood needs more carries. Please. Luckily we play an absolutely dreadful run defense next week, so he should get his due.

* DaVaris Daniels had a great game. He's blossoming into a nice weapon for us.

* TJ Jones again with a solid game. Love this kid.

* How about Toma coming alive with 6 receptions? That out route is money.

* Eifert with another impressive showing. Finally getting the targets he deserves.

* Offensive line played another solid game.

* Kapron Lewis-Moore is quietly having a pretty damn good season. He's been excellent these past few games.

* Gotta love the toughness and grit of Louis Nix to play even while recovering from flu symptoms.

* Tuitt is a beast. Nothing new here.

* Shembo went off in the second half. Sucks in space, though.

* Spond had another good game.

* Very quiet day for Manti. Probably took himself out of the Heisman discussion (at least a realistic chance to win the award). Came alive in the fourth quarter.

* Carlo had a great stuff in the first half.

* Russell!

* Brindza is inconsistent.

Well said ! It was an ugly win, but win none the less ! I needed oxygen after Golson threw the Int. in the end zone !!
One last side note..........Mayock's stock for me just went down the crapper. Mayock and Hammond should go take a leap into Lake Michigan. Rightous pricks ! Yeah I know Hammond wasnt there this week.

KEEP THE FAITH !!!

GO !!! IRISH !!!! GO !!!!

Farley is a liability. He's not a good tackler in space and he fails to set the edge in goal line defense.

According to Kelly, Farley was operated on Wednesday under full anesthesia to put a plate in either his arm or hand (can't remember) and still played. Tough kid who is going to be a very good player at ND.

Defense was at half speed due to health.

Special teams suck due to injuries. We have 3 walk on's playing st.

Kelly is about to lose golson if he pulls him again. He has a long way to go, but Rees is ....well I won't say it but enough of Rees!

Nix is a unanimous first team all American. What a warrior!

Watching our ol dominate the fourth and all 3 over times was inspiring.

Theo is our sr bruiser why not give him the goal line carry. If their kicker makes that kick, many would be questioning this.

Officiating was Busch league. That holding call on daniels was bogus as many other calls both ways.

Mayock?

Pitt played their asssses off. Wow.

This team refuses to lose and find a way.

I hope this flu bug is over and we restore our minds and bodies and finish 3-0.

So baffled by some of the comments on Rees. Kid has been a great ambassador to the university and has been clutch. He had a bad game yesterday, big deal.

Honestly, what I wouldn't mind Kelly doing is if Golson makes some bad reads or just isn't doing anything, sit him out for one series, and talk to him, and than put him back in for the following series. Rees is very good...for one series. After that he is extremely vanilla.

Wasn't Shembo responsible for the pass breakup on the TE fade that would have made it a 3-possession game? He may not be ideal in space, but he came up big when he was needed most yesterday.

Some of my random thoughts for what they're worth. (and its not much)

Are we f#ckin lucky or what?

I'll take it, 9-0 is awesome.

I love our players and coaches.

Pitt is a scrappy bunch of bastids, they played their @sses off and we'll be better because of them.

Our special teams are special alright.

Glad I was watching the game at work and couldn't post here. Now I can say I remained positive throughout.

When I thought about what must be going on in live chat at IE during the game, it made me laugh to myself.

Nothing ever has, or ever will, come easy for us.

We've got a really good team.

We've got a lot to work on.

Anyone who says we should run a bubble screen needs to be examined by proper medical authorities and put on a watch list. :)

We're going to be playing a game in January.

I'm already unbelievably excited about next year.

I'd be lying if I said my confidence about the outcome of this year wasn't shaken a little.

Anything is possible and they proved it yesterday.

GO IRISH!!

Side note: Les Miles is a stooge.

My thoughts:

-Lucky? Yeah, ever heard of "Luck of the Irish", Touchdown Jesus, etc. It's ND lore to be lucky in games and win.
-Penalties 1) I still feel it was a legitimate call for PI on Eifert. The defender had his arm hooked prior to going up for the ball. Tick Tac foul? sure, but still callable. 2) I think we lucked out when Nix wasn't called for a delay of game after spiking the ball after nearly intercepting a tipped pass.
-After watching all three other contenders, I feel we could beat all of them. Alabama- they're good, but have now shown to be beatable. Oregon- I don't understand an 11 point "impressive" win. Sure they scored 60, but they also gave up 50. After a few possessions of acclimating to their speed, ND could hang and beat them. Kansas St- good at what they do, but I don't think Klein would be able to run as well against our D.
-I can understand some wanting to rush the field, the win keeps the dream alive.
-Man did our D wake up late in the 2nd half. Teo's legitimate chance of winning the heisman probably ended, but he's still going to NYC.
-I'm sure this is Golson's first time having adversity (being benched), since he was a stud in HS. The way he has dealt with it has been amazing for a RS freshman. Sure he wanted to pout a little bit, but he came back to prove something. The Golson Legacy started late in the 3rd.
-This game scared me after beating Oklahoma. Sunseri and Graham have been playing good of late, and throw in motivational ploys by the coach (giving their names back on jerseys, playing spoiler, etc) had trap game all over it.
-Looking forward to beating BC, and me sending out the seniors in style on the 17th.

Go Irish

I'm thinking more than a few of our players are having some flu-like symptoms or at least fatigue/lethargy. Luckily, this is hitting the team during a weak part of our schedule so we can absorb the blow. It would definitely explain what we saw yesterday.

my only impression from being at the game was, stadium was as flat as the players in the first three quarters.

place came alive, especially in OT.

the southend zone was louder with pitt fans most of the game.

He has had some good moments, without a doubt, and certainly been clutch given the situations he's been placed in. I still think it's fairly obvious he has very little arm strength, and almost every time he throws the ball to the sideline it looks like it's going to be picked off, just barely making to the designated receiver. He has absolutely no mobility, and isn't a threat to run whatsoever, making it much easier on opposing defenses to eliminate certain aspects of the offense. He really shouldn't see the field unless Golson is injured, like at all...ever again. It's night and day from when Golson is in there and when Tommy is in there, and that INT was just typical, and nearly immediately sent me into horrific flashbacks of last years debacle. Golson is improving with seemingly every drive, and is the OBVIOUS choice.

Agree about arm strength. I think it's the reason TJ dropped the ball when he was wanting to go to the sideline. It was taking forever to get there and the DB was closing. He started moving before it got there.

my biggest impression from this game is that half of the fans that attend games have no clue what is going on. Many a time on offense I'd hear ND fans yelling like we are playing defense. Likewise, at the end of the game, some students tried storming the field. Come on. It was Pitt. They lost to Youngstown State.

We started a chant of "Get off the Field" for those losers. Freshmen...

Also the stadium was flat because the tailgating scene was flat. It felt...weird...

Only way to describe it is no one I talked to actually believed we could blow them out, but that they needed to.

Jones dropped a ball he should have caught. Blaming Rees is ridiculous, but par for the course with the lingering stench of Rees bashing on this board. Rees won two games for us this year, but threw an unfortunate pick yesterday. All in all, Rees has done a good job in difficult circumstances.

I'm no football strategist; light years from one but I do know you may not win every game, or event, you don't quit on, you will lose every game you do quit on. Doesn't appear to be any quit in this team.

I wasn't blaming Rees, I was just stating why TJ left early without the ball.

I'm really impressed with Golson. We saw him take some more steps forward in his development yesterday. Hopefully he will keep it up and build some confidence and rhythm the next two weeks. Going to need him to run the offense at a high level versus USC.

We've also played up to our comp. Very good chance we end up playing K State in the Fiesta. If we do, I'll put up 100k to your 10k we win.

I'm not saying that we can't or wouldn't beat K State, just that I think they deserve to be ranked ahead of us. They've looked like a more dominant and complete team in my opinion.

We could beat our next opponents by 30 points each and we'd still be behind the other three undefeated teams. We have to win out AND two of those teams need to lose. Style points the next three weeks aren't going to make up for all the close games we've had.

What I don't understand is why did Brian Kelly take out Golson for Tommy Rees? Golson's helmet didn't come off once and I don't recall anything saying that Golson was "hurt".[/QUOTE]

His helmet did come off when the defender ripped it off while tackling him. Why there was no facemask called on that play is a mystery to me.

I agree, Golson can do a lot more than Rees could do. Like you said, at least the offense was moving with EG. Rees is a turnover waiting to happen. I really think Brian Kelly just has a hard on for Rees. I'd put in Gunner Kiel before I'd ever put Rees in.

Computer: $700
Internet Connection: $75.00/mo.

Completely blowing any credibility you might have had on IE? Priceless.

Thanks for playing.

Brian Keely play calling

Brian Keely play calling

Brian does not seem to have any imagination with his offensive playing calling. Wondering if he ever watches what works for other teams playing college football. We had a 2nd and goal at the 6 inch line and we have a deep(way to deep) handoff to Riddick for almost a 6 yard loss. A sneak and we are in. Had to settle for a lousy 3. I can figure out almost all his offensive plays as the game goes on so I'm sure the defensive coordinator for the other team can dial that in to. USC scares me.
Here are my thoughts:

-The coaches abandoned the gameplan way too early. Stopped running the ball... panicked into a QB switch... just an all-around poorly called game.
-First time all year we've given up big plays.
-Our 4th quarter... where a Charlie Weis team would've quit... we instead manhandled Pitt. Even after a soul crushing INT in the endzone we got the ball back immediately and marched right down the field.
-Our special teams are all-around atrocious. By far the worst part of our team right now. Incredible that it hasn't cost us games.
-A win is a win is a win... probably not going to the NC... effing Les Miles... but we're staring down a worst case scenario of 11-1. Just great desire and mental toughness to gut out these victories.

What did you think of the play calling at MSU or Oklahoma? Clearly some games you just try to out execute what you perceive to be an outmatched opponent, some games you have to be more creative to keep a perceived opponent advantage off balance.

Golson

Golson

But he needs to run more not just run when he is in trouble. The other teams would slow down the rush if he did that. Did not Kelly want to run an upbeat tempo type offense? Where the heck is that? Kelly wants a mobile QB but Golson does not run enough. Come on Kelly step it up.
Golson has run for 230 yards these last four games. He's really developing into a true dual threat.
