Path to the CFP?

Sure they should strive for that, but that isn't the question. The question really is, make the CFP and get trounced, or win an NY6 bowl game? I'm taking the win. And it isn't just about recruiting, it's about the national storyline that has followed Notre Dame since winning the Cotton Bowl in 1994; 28 seasons ago! It's the fact that other blue bloods (and other close to that tier) have gotten Memphis, Western Michigan, Connecticut, Virginia, Northern Illinois, UCF (yeah they won and went undefeated), Utah, Hawaii, etc. in big bowl games, while ND get's matched up with OSU when it should have been Iowa.

It's about changing the public perception about Notre Dame football, which will result in a change in perception by recruits. Maybe not the recruits within that cycle, but the 13-16 year olds watching and not having to hear for 5 days how Notre Dame is overrated and doesn't deserve these games.

The question is actually do we have a oath to the CFP. Maybe we should have a voting thread that asks:

Do you want a NY6 bowl?
Do you want a CFB bid?

My moneys on the CFB winning out.
Going to a NY6 bowl is not a guarantee win and going to the CFB is not a guaranteed loss.

The problem is too many people on here post this exact thing yet, like BeatSC said, there is no guaranteed win in the NY6 bowl. I would rather lose the CFP game than lose a NY6 bowl. I would rather win a CFP game than win a NY6 bowl. The way our luck has gone, we would probably draw a 2-loss Bama and Saban rarely loses when he has a couple weeks to prepare.

Sure, we could get an easier game and have a better chance to win than drawing Georgia as a #4 team but we have no idea.

We always get the worst possible matchup in NY6 bowls.
Give me the playoffs.

Bama could lose out and the committee would find a way to put them in the playoff.

Being shocked by UC and Bama’s ranking is hilarious to me. UC was never going to make it and they gave the committee the loaded gun to justify it

OU knows the win they are in. They play 11 and 12 and likely one of them a second time

Bear and Herby disagreed on this. If both win out Bear had Cincy in and Herby thinks OU would jump them.

The College Football Playoff is a tv show. Easier if you accept that

Agreed and it would add to the drama and ratings of the TV show if whoever is responsible for Bama being 2 got chased down the street by camera crews and ultimately put in jail.

Right before or after the graphic they showed of OU rising in the playoff rankings multiple times. They reward the final run OU makes every year

It’s was at the very end of the show. I agree though that OU would jump Cincy in that scenario. Bear’s argument was basically ND going 11-1 being the best win. Probably moot though as OU likely isn’t running the table.

What they've basically set up is the following:
-2 SEC in if Bama beats Georgia in SEC Championship game
-Big Ten Champ in as long as the West doesn't pull an upset
-PAC12 Champ in if Oregon holds serve
-If something crazy happens in PAC12 or Big Ten, then they gave themselves an out to have Oklahoma and/or Wake Forest jump Cincy

In short: they set these rankings to make it as hard as possible for Cinci to be included, and if they are it will likely be at the expense of Wake Forest (who also would pull poor ratings and doesn't have political pull). Just ridiculous.

Probably looking at another SEC heavy playoff. It will be absolutely shocking(NOT) when Ohio State is included, then one additional team that isn’t a mainstay. It’s like watching the same movie over and over hoping the ending changes, but it never does.

If they are not gonna actually give a G5 team a shot they need to come out and say it because this is just embarassing at this point. Do I think they are one of the best 4 teams? No. But how many national champions have been the best team in the country? A shit ton.

Cincy just needs to wait until they upgrade from G5 to P5 and then they can join the party.

All in all I don't think being ranked 10th is really any worse than 8th in AP. Wake undefeated would have been in over us either way. Bama wins the SEC CG they are in no matter where they are ranked right now. Yeah they should be 5-8, but what difference does it make since we all know they control their own destiny?

I get it...but if we aren't going to give the G5 teams a shot, then what is the point of sharing a subdivision? Put them with the FCS if this is what we are doing here.

I think it's stupid. I was mostly joking.

Part of me does want to see them make it so Georgia can beat them 76-6 and we can finally be done hearing about these G5 school.

I would contend that they set up a two loss 'Bama to get in as long as the second loss is to GA in a close game.

The CFP committee rankings are pretty close to entirely predictable. There are a couple guys I follow on social media that have figured it out. Their model is not 100%, but pretty close for all 25 spots, every time. There is no eye test. The committee does not watch film and debate. There is a model they use and they apply it every time. IMO, no G5 will ever make the playoff without a lot of weird losses across the P5 board.
