Ha no I am basically the opposite of that guy and I have defended Muslims in other situations ("Ground Zero" mosque idiotic panic, for example), but I cannot ever concede to intimidation. So while I'd never have posted any of those pictures before today, today it needed to be done to demonstrate a refusal to be cowed.

Exactly. Changing behavior based on fear from acts of terror only emboldens terrorists and legitimizes their strategy.

The most dissapointing thing about news coverage yesterday is that most news stations were censoring the cartoons that caused the attack. This sends the wrong message entirely.

Why can't they be offensive and it be free speech? Last time I checked the FCC had rules on what you can put on tv. Some of these cartoons have dick and balls on them. I don't think news stations are cow toeing terrorist by not forcing offensive cartoons down the publics throat and breaking FCC regs.

You're right, some do. But plenty don't. If you think the news did it simply to avoid FCC regulations that's totally acceptable, but I suspect differently.

Hostage taken north of Paris during manhunt for newspaper killings
BY JOHN IRISH
DAMMARTIN-EN-GOELE, France Fri Jan 9, 2015 4:27am EST

(Reuters) - At least one hostage was seized in a town northeast of Paris on Friday during a huge manhunt for two brothers suspected of killing 12 people at a satirical weekly, according to a police source.

Five helicopters were seen flying over an industrial zone outside the town of Dammartin-en-Goele and the French Interior Minister confirmed an operation was taking place there. A police source said the two suspects had been sighted in the town, where at least one person was taken hostage.

Before night fell on Thursday, officers had been focusing on their search some 40 km (25 miles) away on the woodland village of Corcy, not far from a service station where police sources said the brothers had been sighted in ski masks a day after the shootings at the newspaper.

^ This

There was some outlet that used the cartoon of Mohammed with his arm around a Jew with a big hooked nose (stereotypical derogatory image). The outlet blurred?pixelated the Mohammed image to the point of not even knowing it was supposed to be a person, but the Jewish image was left untouched by the outlet because that is OK. Similarly, there have been many instances of satire or "art" on Christian imagery which seem to be fine. Many people still remember "Piss Christ" where an artist has simply put a crucifix in a jar of urine. Has anyone done that with a Koran (Quran)?

I am not asking the government or anyone to crack down on those people who do things like the Christ piece mentioned above. I am simply wondering why media outlets would have no problem showing that piece and others like it over the years, but never show these Mohammed images. If it wasn't for the internet and the myriad of outlets nowadays, I would not have known what the Charlie Hebdo cartoons looked like unedited.

Good luck to them. That must be a novel idea that the US government never thought of trying. lol

But good for them. Hell, the more the merrier when it comes to shutting down jihadi propaganda.

I spent my work day posting Charlie Hebdo cartoons of Muhammed to Facebook. I'm from the Sam Harris/Bill Maher school of liberal. Fuck these people making demands about what we can draw pictures of and what we can't. The only time I was ever disappointed in Trey Parker and Matt Stone is when they didn't go through with showing Muhammed on South Park. In general, I respect people's religious beliefs, but the freedom to publish freely and be critical of religious, government and cultural institutions is a value that should never be compromised.

That was a fascinating case. They really, really wanted to, but Comedy Central (i.e. Viacom) refused to let them air Part 2 in it's original form. They only aired a censored version. Trey and Matt flipped a shit over this and the censored Mohammed episodes are the only ones you cannot watch on South Park Studios because they think it's a disgrace that Comedy Central won't let them air them as intended. They almost quit doing South Park over Comedy Central being bitches about those episodes.

In the 14 years we've been doing South Park we have never done a show that we couldn't stand behind. We delivered our version of the show to Comedy Central and they made a determination to alter the episode. It wasn't some meta-joke on our part. Comedy Central added the bleeps. In fact, Kyle's customary final speech was about intimidation and fear. It didn't mention Muhammad at all but it got bleeped too. We'll be back next week with a whole new show about something completely different and we'll see what happens to it.

I think Comedy Central totally fucking pussed out. Now, they weren't any different than anyone else, so it's not like you can single them out. But I think it would've been an important statement for one media outlet in America to stand up. That was one of my most disappointing moments as an American--the American press's reaction to the Muhammad cartoons. It was completely wimpy. Cartoonists, people who do satire--we're not in the army, we're never going to be fucking drafted and this is our time to stand up and do the right thing. And to watch the New York Times, Comedy Central, everybody just go 'No, we're not going to do it because basically we're afraid of getting bombed' sucked. I was so disappointed.

I know I'll probably get crucified for this but I really haven't a care. Who says the propaganda machine is a religion without first looking at the beginning of the propaganda. I have read Russia ( Russia sanctions 'must be lifted now' - Hollande — RT News )would have an interest in something of this nature, as well as Isreal ( Netanyahu warns of 'grave mistake' if France recognises Palestine - Business Insider ). The media in our country is like watching a cartoon half the time and reading Mein Kampf the other. The facts and illustrations are out there for all to read but if we want to shut our minds down to "propaganda" so be It. But don't be surprised

Sorry buddy, but this is a different war. Victory won't be predicated upon a number of countries banning together like the Allies to defeat Germany and Japan.

This is a different war, and victory will have to come from intelligence (all kinds) and, when threats present themselves, special forces. It won't be a bad guys on one side vs good guys on the other and meet in the middle.

Being anti-immigration is being anti-American, a nation comprised almost entirely of immigrants.

I don't think he is anti immigration. What he might have been trying to point out (and I could discuss more at length) is Europe's vastly growing Muslim population in the past two decades and the lack of assimilation that has come with it. That's why I posted the article above quoting Merkel from Germany.

It's no secret at all that there are radical clerics in Germany, Spain, France, and the UK. It's well documented if anyone cares to research the problems.
