You guys are just trying to change the topic from the fact Australia is lapping you in the pool.
Even a blind squirrel finds a nut.🤣How many years has it been since Australia beat America in the medal count for pool events?

Thought the opening ceremonies were largely cool. Like the idea of having the parade of nations on vehicles. Made it drag much less. I thought the visual of the painting characters leaving their frames to watch the procession from the Louvre windows were really cool.

I don't have much of an issue with the Last Supper thing but can understand why it might rankle some. The iconography used isn't from the literal last supper attended by Christ, but from a popular painting in the 1500s painted by what was reportedly a very gay man. It's not a holy relic.

Excited for the games and that people are talking about this as the controversy and not some human rights abuses being committed by the host country.

Also think having the flame hovering is neat.
This can't really be the thought of most people, right?

I'm not very religious as of late, in fact most would describe me as a nominal atheist with Buddhist (non-religious) and Catholic tendencies. I do love the Catholic church for what it aspires to be. To reduce the blatant disrespect and intentional target the French's orchestrated reimagining of a historical Christian image to promote the current zeitgeist is strange to me. It's amongst the most well known religious icons and somehow, you explain it away as if it to try and convince people of faith they are stupid for ever valuing the image in the first place.

I'm equally surprised more of you aren't a little disturbed that children were included in that display.

The Pieta is an especially moving image to me but I'm sure you could reductively explain why I'm stupid for being moved by it.

I will say, I loved the Gojira portion. I like a number of their songs and it was a cool juxtaposition of being staged in classical French architecture with their hard riffs ringing out amidst the flameshow.

Anyway Australia is half the size of Road Island and we have 4 times as many gold medals as your entire country in the swimming pool.

Yea but it’s a giant island. What else is there to do but die from the hundreds of poisonous animals.

It’s already been pointed out above that it wasn’t even a representation of the last supper.

Apologies, I may have missed the compelling evidence. Are you referring to people saying it wasn't the actual last supper, it was just a painting? or the Feast of Dionysus?

I had started to write my reply this morning but got occupied with life and came back and finished my thoughts and hit post without refreshing the last several pages.

Yes, the Feast of Dionysus is such a common feast day in France...lol
No, it was in honor of the Greeks you know the people that invented the Olympiad and again we have now derailed the convo from actual athletics. I will stop now and not reply to anymore off topic discussion.

It's crazy how different it is watching during the day vs watching prime time. Prime time is allllll ads and human interest pieces. During the day you can actually watch the events.
Yeah, that coverage is crap. I’m just watching full replays on Peacock. Way better.
