meh but former players always talk well of their coaches, it would be very shocking if they didn't blow smoke up his butt

I get that, but it was the attention to detail aspect of his coaching style that got my attention, even giving a specific example to his own play. I could careless about him being a previous HC or having OC experience, I want a technician that can help these young guys improve. I'll trust that Mele wasn't blowing smoke, as he doesn't strike me as a guy that would just make that up.

Feelings towards a coach I get, but explaining coaching style, I doubt he was doing that.

And that's definitely a problem we'll have to deal with. Is the regression simply because we lost two 1st rounders plus HH, or is it that JQ is also not good either? Hard to quantify it.

However, talent is still there, we fall (which we probably will) into the top 30-35 I think that's still a very good OL, just not a totally dominant one.

I'm guessing most of IE will do the same. The unfortunate thing is that the OL will most certainly take a step back next year because of losing Nelson and McGlinchy. I can almost hear the screams to fire Quinn already.

Here's what's going to happen. O-line os going to come out and play very good for the first 3-4 games. Everyone will say Quinn is better than expected and as good or better than Harry. Then we're going to have a tight game where we can't run the ball, because BW can't throw it in the ocean and the D is stacking 8-9 guys in the box. Koon will then opine to everyone that this was the biggest mistake in BK's career.

If you look into this, this doesn't appear to be a bad hire. You don't forget what you learned simply because you weren't a OL coach for the last three years. You think he's not watching practice or talking to the other coaches? OL technique is technique and there really isn't much difference from one coach to the next. Every coach has one or two things that may be slightly different, but the thing you need to focus on, is his attention to detail, evaluate talent and the ability to motivate. That's where the separation is with coaches.

I get that, but it was the attention to detail aspect of his coaching style that got my attention, even giving a specific example to his own play. I could careless about him being a previous HC or having OC experience, I want a technician that can help these young guys improve. I keep telling you guys I'm not just a pretty face on here.

That’s odd. Is he leaving for another job? Must be, right? Kind of a weird time in the cycle to just dump your O Line coach.

apparently he left by mutual decision and is headed to Wofford to join Josh Conklin.

Koon will then opine to everyone that this was the biggest mistake in BK's career.

One of the biggest tests for our offensive line will come against Michigan. HH's offensive lines struggled against good defenses. There's no reason to think Quinn's offensive line will change that in their first game. The play of our quarterback will have a large impact on the the offensive line's success in that game and throughout the 2018 season. Wimbush and/or Book will need to be accurate through the air or we will struggle to run the ball.

At this point there is no reason to question the selection of Quinn as offensive line coach. We have to replace two potential first round draft choices on the offensive line. Whether or not the players are in place to do that immediately in 2018 is a reflection of HH's ability to recruit and coach them up over the past two or three years.

Quinn's impact (positive or negative) will be reflected in the progression of the line and future recruiting at the OL position. If I remember correctly many on this list questioned the hire of Harry Hiestand because the offensive line (under his guidance) was ineffective during his tenure at Tennessee. He far exceeded the expectations of most of us during his tenure at ND culminating in the Joe Moore Award for this year's offensive line. Before criticizing the Quinn hire, I will wait to see how he recruits and develops those recruits. When Kelly and Quinn were together previously, the offense was very effective. I think we may be pleasantly surprised at how the offense performs with Quinn in an on-the-field coaching role.

Interesting in that response thread is that Long turned down an offer from Bama to be a co-offensive coordinator with someone.

I just figured Bama said "no thanks." I still probably believe that, over Long being offered a job. He would've skedaddled, IMO, even if he had to put up with sharing duties for a year.

But it's interesting to see that "multiple sources" say Long was offered a position.

That part I believe. Saban might've been interested in bringing him in for a Co-OC role, but without much (if any) pay raise. I can see Long turning that offer down, but not the sole OC job.

I'd wager 70% of BK's staff over the years have been his "buddies" 1 bad egg and 1 who has a debilitating disease shouldn't outweigh the others, or they should, at minimum, receive the same "buddy" moniker angst instead of only fitting it to narratives.

Donovan Raiola, Graduate Assistant who worked with the offensive line, is gonna get paid. Evidently Hiestand thought a lot of him.

Kelly in presser -- National search. Interviewed 4 candidates. Had Sam Mustipher and Alex Bars on the committee that interviewed the candidates. Jeff Quinn was consensus of the group.

I've enjoyed listening to Quinn (as well as Joseph) in the coverage today.

Quinn is certainly a charismatic guy. I can see him doing well on the recruiting trail as long as his work ethic is there and we identify the right guys.

And assuming he continues churning out road graders/edge setters. Keep putting guys in the league.
