as with most things instant reaction is way over the top, followed by a round of equally over the top opposing reaction.

Truth usually resides in the middle.

I like to withhold judgement until all the pieces fall (hiring of new coach).

However, the end is near for the current coaching era at ND.

I may get beat up for this, but neither Elko or HH is a lateral move. Elko is making a reported 500k a year more in Texas and HH is going pro. I think it sucks to lose coaches like this but I see it as people notice what they have done at ND. There’s a lot of talent to work with in South Bend, someone will inherit that and do a great job. I’m trying to stay positive here, but there’s other great coaches out there.

Elko was definitely a lateral move. ND offered him $1.5m to stay. He left for $1.8m at TAMU. Moving to a less prestigious program for a 20% raise in the exact same capacity isn't a "step up" in any real sense of the word.

The only way it makes sense is if Elko thinks Kelly won't survive another season in South Bend, and he wanted to jump first while he had initiative rather than be forced onto the job market in the post-Kelly coaching reboot.

I hear you man, but with tax implications and such that’s a ton of money. Plus I heard closer to 2 million. That’s life altering money in a sport with no guarantees. I totally get where you’re coming from. Like I said, trying to remain positive.

Did Fong bump his head? Ferentz is going to leave his brother as OC to come to ND and be Co-OC + OL? Yeah sure.

Tom Manning is a good one. Makes $250k-$300k tops and has Mount Union on his resume and went to Youngstown Ursuline Catholic. He's on my list.

C'mon. If I'm making $100,000 and a different company offers me $125,000 for a job with the same title, that's a step up, period. Now, maybe you could argue that my employer should have matched the $125,000 offer, but to call it "lateral" is incorrect IMO.

Welcome to the internet... Just read that FSU won the "Best OL in the ACC" award in 2013, 2014, 2015 & 2016 under Trickett

Really? Someone should tell them.

"Florida State’s offensive line in 2015 was much maligned. Some was deserved, some not. Nine players started at least three games due to injury and inconsistency."

I agree with you. Hope I'm wrong, but with all the people leaving, it seems that maybe there is a feeling BK won't last too much longer, or as you say, it is better to get out ahead while you're hot instead of in the wake of a house cleaning. Or maybe BK is signaling for people to make a move if you want. Even at the player level, seems like something is going on that has the internal makings churning.

Financially, yes, but in this case not in terms of prestige nor in terms of stepping stone to his ultimate goal, which is HC

Do we know all the details of what happened there though? (I may have missed a breakdown somewhere)

So if UTEP offered to pay Saban 20% more than he's currently making at 'Bama to be their HC, and he took the offer, you'd argue that wouldn't be at best a horizontal move?

Not only is it a big money difference, it's a like-tiered school which no one will admit. It's not like Boone Pickens offered him $2M to go to Stillwater.

It gets his SEC box checked in recruiting plus he gets the Texas box checked at the same time.

Resume looks like:

Jersey/Philly guy
Penn education
Paid dues at Eastcoast FCS for a decade
Got his 5 year MAC stamp
Checked his ACC box in fine fashion.
Checked ND box in 12 months.
Double majored in SEC/Texas recruiting/coaching.

This guy is gold anywhere east of the Rockies assuming they go .500 with Auburn and LSU and beat Ark, MSU and Miss.

If I were him though, I'd fire my agent. They left too much money on the table. The kind of money that would have stopped any complaining by ND fans.

I love the tinfoil hats. Obviously BK is getting fired after next season... That's the ONLY reason elko and HH would leave.

There have been calls in this thread for Ed Warinner to come to ND. He is the perfect example of someone that did exactly what you are lamenting. In fact I would say that was worse as at least HH is going to the NFL, the pinnacle of his sport. EW left OSU for a lateral move(maybe?) to Minnesota. This sucks. I hate it, but this is something that happens everywhere in the world of coaching.

I do agree that HH was probably our most valuable coach, but this is life for coaches...They move...A lot...

Warriner didn’t have a choice to leave OSU

I dunno. Okie State has won a bunch more games this decade than A&M has.
Agree with you about the Texas and SEC merit badges, but he wasn’t exactly in the minor leagues with us. Either way you make the real money in college as head coach, not a coordinator, and his path to that was faster at ND, IMO.

Every time I would see Harry in an interview, I would think that this guy is the epitome of what I would want in a football coach. Nothing slick about him. Just a no-nonsense, hard working, blue collar, low-key with productive rage at the seams kind of guy. It was interesting to me that he would coach for Kelly, considering how Kelly has had to balance being the figurehead of the program.

Honestly, I think the part of Kelly that is most successful as a coach is when he expresses himself with that fire and vitriol that I have witnessed in Heistand.

Did any of you notice that before the Miami game, Kelly came out in his weekly presser in a pinstripe and brought back some of that slick mentality of a politician? The truckin' thing was full fledge and we heard everything we wanted to hear about taking care of business. A red flag went up in the back of my mind. Kelly is a better coach when his mentality is old-school, like he could give a fudge about impressing anyone outside the program.

I think if Kelly continues to let that spirit animal out more, and kicks the slick guy to the curb, he will steady the ship and keep the winning going.

Good luck, Harry. Thank you truly for all you have done, especially for representing the University with integrity and for being a strong leader willing to be the bad guy for the right reasons.

I am endorsing John Peterson from Pitt.

Has done a great job at Pitt since 2015. OG Dorian Johnson and OT's Adam Bisnowaty and Brian O'Neill were ALL-ACC in 2016. Johnson was a First Team AA. Brian O'Neil was a HS WR who went to Pitt as a TE and then got switched to OT. He took over for Bisnowaty at LT this year and declared early for the draft after getting a 2nd round grade.

I have a friend who coached for Miami at the same time Peterson was there. This was during the Big Ben era. Peterson was the OL/Run Game Coord. at the time for the Redskins. His wife went to school with Peterson at Middletown. A quick search leads me to believe he's clean of any Tatoo-gate problems.

If the above doesn't have you sold, he was the TE/Recruiting Coordinator for Tressel from '04-Tatoo gate. Where better to go if you can't be at your alma mater?

Ferentz isn't leaving Iowa after his dad has basically set it up for him to take over, especially since he's already the O-Co.

Gonna miss Harry. It's funny, he was hated at Tennessee before he came to ND. His OL was terrible and the fans said he never recruited. Never dreamed he'd be as good as he was. Good luck with the Bears.

OL is the one position where you want the coach to have strong mid-west recruiting ties. Realistically, we arent pulling many of the big uglies out of Texas or SEC country. So you need a guy with strong Ohio, PA and jersey roots.\\

Just have to put a huge buyout clause in the contract so that Urban cant poach him.
