2 years ago one of their players who I know thru the family told me in person the message from the va tech coaches was stay after them they are SOFT. I think this will be different.
I think you're right. They are going to dare ND to throw over the top. This feels like a Claypool kind of a game.
Wonder if we are going to have ACC refs or refs from another conf for this game? I can see every game with ND working against them

I think we might see VT taking risks on the Irish short passing routes and bubble screens.
Looking at the ND film the past two weeks they will surmise that this is the only way maybe to stop the Irish.
We may see some new lanes/stop and go routes/ 8 cuts from the Ian Book/chip long
route tree
Jumped on a VT forum to see what they were saying. They're mostly talking about what to drink, cook at the tailgate or why Gameday won't be there. No real smack talk going on.
Two of the better posts are, "My body is ready" & "RIP my liver."
From Irish Illustrated......
The fact is few teams – at least ranked teams – have been caught off guard in Lane Stadium the last decade. The last ranked team to fall to Virginia Tech at home was No. 9 Miami in 2009, one week after the Hokies defeated No. 19 Nebraska.
Since 2015, Virginia Tech has played four ranked teams at home…and lost them all by an average of more than a touchdown per defeat.
It's crazy that "coming out flat" after a big win is even a possibility. You think Bama, Clemson, or Georgia comes out flat after a big game? We gotta get over that nonsense, and get ready to play the next week. Hopefully we're turning a corner here.
Josh Vowles over at OFD did some digging into VT's home record recently and it's, well....underwhelming. Surprisingly underwhelming. They're record against ranked opponents was pointed out on here already (0-6 since the '09 season).
Here's the article, and I'll point out my biggest take away below:

"Over the past 5 years, Virginia Tech is 19-12 at home against all opponents (2013-2017). A WHOPPING 9 of those wins have come against non Power 5 schools.
That means that the Hokies are 10-11 against Power 5 schools inside Lane Stadium. They also lost a game to East Carolina.
And that’s what this now legendary home field intimidation gets them?"

IMO, it will be a loud and raucous night game. They don't have a lot of night games. Big night losses for VT over the last 4-5 years have included Clemson, OhioSt, and Miami. And it will be their game of the year. We should clearly out-talent them. While their home record has not been intimidating, it's a big prime time match up, and nothing would shock me. I hope BK, Clark, and Chip have the kids ready to withstand the early raucousness.
Miami was weird for a bunch of reasons. The hype train was full steam ahead and Josh Adams' Heisman campaign was probably a distraction. Miami was also buying into the whole rivalry aspect of the game where we kept playing it off as just another business trip. Finally, once things started going their way we were unable to stop the momentum.
This week, there's no distractions to the level of #33Trucking. I can only hope the coaches are ditching the business trip talk and have them prepared to play an emotional game of football.
Agreed. The thing that baffles me about what happened in Miami last year is that it happened in BK's 8th season, and it wasn't his first road trip in prime time. The few that come to mind are '12 Oklahoma and '15 Clemson, where he won the first and kept the second dramatically close, and the pair in East Lansing in '12 and '17 where he basically whooped on Sparty, but says he got "caught off guard" last year. Probably didn't take Hard Rock Stadium seriously would be my guess.
My prediction is that he will have the boys ready and go back to the basics in preparation that saw more success in big road games in prior years.
But you're right, when momentum starts to swing on the road in favor of the home team and the crowd is getting into it, anything can happen at that point.
I've said this for some time, the Miami loss was simply a product of Richt's game plan to force BW to throw. He knew we were one dimensional, and called the game plan as such. Adams was 16 for 40. BW, aside from one 20 yard scamper, was 10 for 4 yards. NOt to mention he was INT'd twice and fumbled. Dex was hardly used, but looked decent in the touches he got. Wish they would have used him more.
Had we had a Book-like offense for that game, I don't think Richt would have called the same game plan.
The raucousness of the opening, sure it helped Miami,,,, but they knew how to beat us. It was the first game that made it clear that a BW led O couldn't win vs a talented D that made an effort to put the game in BW's hands.
Deer in headlights look was pretty awesome too. Vapor locked QB is not high on my list of concerns now.
