I think our best chance to win this game is if Kelly cuts Golson loose, and gives him the green light to run if there is a lot of open space in front of him. Keep the safeties up, and the LBs at the LOS, and Fuller and Co. will have a field day. The problem is that you risk turning the ball over, almost every time Golson tucks and runs. It will be interesting to see how much faith Kelly has in Golson's ability to hold on to the ball.

Was just telling my buddy I want to see us play with some tempo and let Golson run. Kelly on Thursday even mentioned you can make this defense tired. Gives me some hope we come out firing. Picking up tempo early may help us get over the slow starts.

Agreed kmoose. I don't want the team to play "tight" and Golson to be more worried about protecting the ball than making plays... thereby leading to missed opportunities and inevitably more mistakes.

Got to give Golson the green light and trust him to make plays and we'll see what happens.

Damn right. Until he plays free, he won't play to his potential. Having him play conservative will halt his development into the player we all hope he can be. If he can get past the turnover obstacle, the sky is the limit. If we don't allow him to fly, then he'll never reach that next level. Now is the time.

College Gameday sign: "Famine her right in the potato." Lotta boards have enjoyed that one this morning. Also "Jeff Driskel paid me for his autograph."

Until he turns the ball over on each of ND's first 3 possessions, and we are down, 21-0, at the end of the 1st quarter.

FSU is going to score. This defense has outplayed everyone's expectations, but it is neither the 2012, nor even the 1988, defense. It's playing lights out, but it is not a dominant defense.

So it's not just as easy as turning Golson loose. There is a real risk to doing so.

I respectfully disagree. I honestly believe that if our defense plays great and Golson plays just "okay", then we most likely lose this game. It also continues to halt Golson's development. I would bet my bottom vbuck on the fact that if we win today, we only accomplish that with Golson playing lights out.

Again, we're not just talking about today either. He eventually has to be let loose in order to play to his potential. I don't believe that he slowly does that over a couple seasons. I think the light turns on the moment he opens up his game, can play free and without overthinking his actions on the field.

Again... Just my opinion.

Hegarty's name is not mentioned during the game.

Running game rocks and allowing Golson to stay "home".

OLine gets a game ball.

I'm not sure what you are respectfully disagreeing with. We both have said that turning Golson loose is our best chance to win. But it's a fact that Golson has a tendency to turn the ball over when he runs. So winning the game is not just as easy as turning Golson loose. If you turn him loose and he fumbles the ball 3 or 4 times, then throws a couple of INTs because we have to throw the ball every down to try to come back, then not only do we lose the game, but what does a 5 or 6 turnover game do to his development?

In all fairness, it's hard for them to pick ND with all of the turnover issues. If Golson has more than one turnover, I think it's really hard to win.

I had a few conversations with others lately that inspired some "creative" thinking on my part.

Go back in time to when rumors were swirling that Bob Diaco might take a head coaching job. Brian, looking to simplify his job asks himself who he can call to take over, and move the program ahead in an even more sympathetic cooperative manner.

The same person keeps coming up BVG. But will he jump back to the college game? Well his youngster Montgomery, is going to enter college in the fall. And BVG has been filling a placeholder position with the Jets since his unfortunate experience with the Tigers . . .

BK puts together a package with the best pay of any assistant coach and lines things up for BVG to consider. In putting together his pitch BK has all his "i's" dotted and his "t's" crossed! And philosophically, BK has all his points rehearsed, and polished.

He gets VanG on the line as says, "Brian, how would you like to come here to South Bend and run the defensive side of the ball?"

BVG replies with a few questions of his own, and they chat for a while. Then they get down to serious business. That was the day Brian Kelly and Brian VanGorder outlined the plan, and agreed on its execution, the plan to beat Jameis Winston and FSU!

Think about it. Human nature. This staff. I bet it was one of the first conversations they ever had!
