Fox: Dan has been solid against the running game. Carlo and Dan really compliment each other well.

We need to get plays in faster and run plays that are locked with no audibles allowed.

Q: Practice didn't go well but they still played well?
A: Yes, this year but they know the two are tied together.

There were times on the offensive side of the ball where we didn't practice well and it showed in the game.

On walk ons on ST - how do they come in and beat out scholarship players?

There are scholarship palyers who are not on ST who should be - they need to recognize that and get better.

It's our job to train them up and challenge them to step up. Lots of levels to the question. Not sure I want to answer it fully now.

We are going to demand more from Everett this week.

Anytime your QB goes on the road and plays the way Golson did you hope you can take it to the next level and move the bar up.

We're gonna move that bar up a little bit on him and demand more from him.

Q: worrying about where they sit in the BCS polls?
A: I got out of politics once. I'm not getting back in.

I let the sports information director waste his time on where we'll be in the BCS and rankings and things like that.

On the noise - he lets the director deal with it. He fills BK in on what he needs to know. It's a daily thing.

He still has that edge about him based on some of his answers, I love it. He has the mindset that were 0-0 and haven't proven anything yet, that mentality has shown all season and I don't see a let down happening in the next three weeks. Pure focus.

Go Irish!

Here's a stat: I deactivated my facebook account 2 days before Navy, and have not reactivated it one time. I think I am doing my part to help the team win and I will continue this for all of us.

But seriously, thanks all those who post real stats. I love this site, and can always count on good breakdowns of whoever we are playing.

thats not a stat...i havent changed my underwear...thats a fickin stat...haha

"I let the sports information director waste his time on where we'll be in the BCS and rankings and things like that." Classic quote from BK. But seriously, we need significant margin of victory each of these next three weeks. And hope that if Stanford doesn't beat Oregon, they at least keep it close.

We seriously need to make this game a blow out. The remaining games as well.

Firstly, I'll take 12-0 by any means. If ND wins these four games by four points total, I'm totally okay with it.

That said, I think the biggest thing is beating Southern Cal down more so than Oregon will/did.

Do you guys think we cover the 16.5 or are we looking for a closer margin here?
I tend to think we are going to take care of business, but I can't decide on whether it will be a blow out or not.

Are you actually betting or are you just wondering? I wouldn't touch that line with a million-foot poll considering the close games we have played at home. And Pitt is not that bad. They can definitely hang in the game if we don't score touchdowns in the red zone.

But if I absolutely had to choose, I would lay the points.

I tend to think we are going to take care of business, but I can't decide on whether it will be a blow out or not.

Let's take a look at the advanced metrics:

Pitt's Offense
Overall (F/+): 41
Rushing: 90
Passing: 42
Standard Downs: 57
Passing Downs: 25

ND's Defense
Overall (F/+): 7
Rushing: 6
Passing: 13
Standard Downs: 7
Passing Downs: 15

ND's Offense
Overall (F/+): 3
Rushing: 3
Passing: 11
Standard Downs: 2
Passing Downs: 14

Pitt's Defense
Overall (F/+): 66
Rushing: 95
Passing: 73
Standard Downs: 83
Passing Downs: 76

  • The only lower ranked rushing defense we've faced is Navy, against whom we rushed for 293 yards at 6.3 YPC. Since then, we've put up good rushing numbers against some of the best rush defenses in the nation. Now that our OL has gelled and our RBs are more accustomed to Hiestand's zone blocking scheme, we could easily rush for 400+ on Pitt.
  • Similarly, the only lower ranked pass defense we've faced is Navy, against whom we passed for 197 yards with our a RS freshman in his first start. If Golson connects on a couple play-action bombs, he could easily exceed that number.
  • Our defense has stuffed far better rushing attacks than Pitt's many times this year already. If they're going to move the ball on us at all, it'll be through the air, since Pitt's passing attack is currently ranked better than every opponent we've faced save OU. Granted, with the way our secondary tackled against OU, I'm not worried at all, but that will likely be Pitt's game plan; connect on short throws underneath and try to get good YAC.
  • That will likely determine how close this game is; our pass rush vs. Sunseri's ability to get the ball out quickly and accurately underneath. With the injuries they've sustained recently, I fully expect ND to stuff their rush and to be in Sunseri's face all game long. ND covers easily.
  • If there's anything to worry about it, it's our performance gap between home and away games. The staff has surely noticed it as well; hopefully Kelly is analyzing the players' pre-game routine to see what can be changed.
  • It's worth noting that, as average as Pitt is, they are significantly better than BC and WF. Blowing them off the field will look much better than doing the same over the following two weeks.

Coach Paul Chryst announced Monday that three players -- linebackers Dan Mason and Manny Williams and offensive lineman Ryan Schlieper -- will miss the rest of the season with injuries.

Mason suffered a lacerated liver making a tackle late in the game. His injury is especially heartwrenching, as the redshirt junior just returned five weeks ago after missing two years with a devastating knee injury. He was starting and excelling at middle linebacker, racking up 27 tackles in five games.

That's not really one you hear about too often. Seems like that may hurt.

Spleen injuries are much more common but both are due to blunt force trauma to the core, damaging internal organs. Motor vehicle accidents and contact sports (including skate boards and railings, skiing and trees, etc) I believe are leading causes. Consider the impact of the Golson helmet hit to your abdomen or rib cage. Or an elbow, fist, foot, or even a shoulder pad hit to the same location. The pads are designed to protect the other guy's shoulder not your flesh.

I had a friend with this problem from a sleigh riding accident as a kid. Went home complaining about his stomach hurting. Fortunately his mom took him to ER to get checked out.

Backup RG To Start

Pitt Football: Panthers get Doakes ready to go - Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Sam Werner, PPG
10/31

... the Panthers will have to replace right guard Ryan Schlieper, who was lost for the season last week with a foot injury. None of Pitt's second-string offensive linemen have made any career starts.
The task likely will fall to redshirt sophomore Arthur Doakes, who filled in for Schlieper after he went down against Temple.

...

Doakes and the rest of the offensive line will face a tall task Saturday. Notre Dame's front seven is widely considered among the best in the country and has been the linchpin to the team's success

Reading the Pitt boards on Scout. They're generally pretty rational. Most acknowledge that this is a likely loss for them, but remain optimistic that they can make a game out of it or even pull off the win.

Seeing a lot of comparisons to their 13-9 upset over West Virginia in 2007.

There is an insanely arrogant ND fan on there spouting off about our "amazing" rushing offense, Pittsburgh has no chance, etc etc. Then there's a Pitt fan who is one of those "ND has played no one, they're overrated, they would get murdered by real teams" guys that will still exist even if ND went undefeated against the Top 12 teams in the country. Really embarrassing.

Was watching the ticker at the bottom. Interesting scores that day. Bama only beat So. Miss 17-3 and Texas AM clobbered Baylor 73-10.
