We're back again.

Notre Dame's College Football Playoff hopes may be up in smoke, but the season isn't over. And before the Irish host Navy on Senior Day on Saturday, eighth-year head coach Brian Kelly met the media for his weekly press conference on Tuesday.

Here are the highlights from Kelly's address.

-- Kelly's wrap-up of the Miami loss: "Obviously Miami played very well. We learned a lot from the game." He added that the team is moving on to Navy.

-- Kelly, on Navy's triple option offense: "I think everybody knows how prolific they are and how difficult they are to stop."

-- Kelly said that first-year defensive coordinator Mike Elko's history in facing the option and ability to stop it is something they vetted in the interview process.

-- Kelly said that against Navy's offense, you have to be prepared for every potential look going back as far as a decade. The eighth-year head coach added that when the Irish hosted the Mids in 2015 Navy's offense showed looks that hadn't been on film in six or seven years.

-- Notre Dame's defense used a full practice session during the bye week to practice defending Navy's option, Kelly said.

-- Kelly, on what Notre Dame took away from playing in a frenzied environment inside Hard Rock Stadium last weekend: "We learned a lot from the environment. I think that was a great lesson to be learned."

-- Kelly reiterated that junior quarterback Brandon Wimbush's left hand was not an issue in his performance last Saturday. Wimbush has not had any treatment on the hand this week.

-- Kelly: "Our guys are clearly focused on the preparation for Navy."

-- What does graduate student left tackle Mike McGlinchey mean to Notre Dame? "He's what you'd want from a student-athlete at Notre Dame," Kelly said. "He graduates, he stays with his teammates, he captains this football team for two years." Kelly said that McGlinchey embodies what it means to be a student-athlete at ND.

-- What does Notre Dame need to do to improve its rushing defense? "We have to have a better attention to detail. Our fits have to be better. We have to get off blocks." Kelly added that the Irish need to win one-on-on match ups and when they get an opportunity to make plays, they have to make them.

-- Kelly acknowledged that Notre Dame did not force a turnover against Miami, something it has been known for all season. "We're right there. We're going to get our turnovers," Kelly said.

-- How is quarterback Brandon Wimbush bouncing back from a disappointing performance against Miami? "I think he's a competitor," Kelly said. "A competitor wants to be at his best when his best is needed, and he wasn't." Kelly said that Wimbush is concentrated on being his best against Navy.

Yes. Plus, Navy seems to always play ND tough and it's on senior day (call it emotions or whatever, the Irish usually underperform then also). I wouldn't be surprised to see a sloppy 4-7 point win by the Irish.

Lol I wouldn’t be surprised by an upset and we lose by 2 touchdowns. This season has been fun but last week was back to reality for us. No good comes from this game at all. A win just has us beating Navy and the masses (rightfully) saying “all the overhyped Irish can do is beat lower level teams no one on an elite talent level.” A loss makes us the punchline of major college football again with every swinging dick saying “lol they actually thought they could go to the playoff?!?! What a joke LMAO Roll Tide/Go Bucks/ Boomer Sooner/ Go Tigers/ DA U.” We have to win out to get any respect and I just don’t know if we can. I just hope we can play a team at our level if we make an NY6 game butnfiest we got 2 more games to win.

We'll beat Navy. I think we lose at Stanford though.

Our defensive lack of big time talent is finally getting exposed, and Love will carve us IMO.

Lol I wouldn't be surprised by a 28 pt win and we lose you until the next loss.

As long as our offense doesn't get exposed (aka avoid a super shitty gameplan), our defense won't be in bad spots like they were against Miami.

I don't think Love is going to be a huge issue. I'm more worried about Costello hitting his TE's over the heads of our linebackers.

Just venting my man, plus I’m on vacation so I have more time to vent/post. Trust me I wish I was going into vacation week with some positive energy. Thank God I’m not at work to hear it from my coworkers. Their trash talking texts are pissing me off enough.

Has anyone been watching "A Season With"? I saw the first couple of episodes, but I haven't been able to keep up. I was honestly surprised at the amount of yelling that Niumatalolo does. He's always so soft-spoken in interviews.

Navy doesn't look like they have the horses to compete, this year. I expect a pretty sizable win.

Is anyone interested in briefly explaining triple option?
I mean I guess the three options are pass, RB run or QB run but isn't that what ND has going on and basically every other college football team - what is different with Navy?

It's FB, RB, QB. Pass usually isn't a part of it.

THIS.

I can't believe the shit I've read on here this week. I expect it from Twitter, but not here. I get it, last week was about as brutal as possible, big opportunity, and a big failure. It doesn't take away the 8 wins this year though, including some in dominating fashion against legit opponents. This wasn't some smoke and mirrors, luck out against bad competition season that got exposed. They physically dominated USC and NC State. Those are good, talented teams. Kick Navy's ass ( w/ respect), then win at Stanford, 10 win regular season and a New Year's 6 bowl all still out there.

This is a very basic explanation becasue its actually kinda hard to explain and there are a lot of subtleties that are even harder to explain. First option is the QB under center has the option to hand it off to a FB on the dive. If the dive isnt there, the QB keeps it and runs either inside or outside of the tackle depending on the play call. If thats not there, then he pitchs the ball to the slot back who usually comes in motion and runs behind where the FB starts for the snap. The whole system is based on the QB reading two or three key guys. Which defensive player is keyed changes based on the play call, so its difficult for a defense to know which guy they are targeting. Because teams have to account for all the options on each side of the field, there is usually at most one defender left open to make the tackle. If they miss, it often leads to big runs. Having to be perfect for long sustained drives is difficult, so Navy often busts several long runs. However, the offense is meant to protect leads and run clock, so if Navy gets behind, its harder for them to come back. They also don't pass much and when they do its usualy longer routes that try to get defenders to bite on the option and then go over the top of them.

Advanced Stats - ND Field Position and Finishing Drives

Advanced Stats - ND Field Position and Finishing Drives

Part of Advanced Stats Five Factors are Field Position and Finishing Drives.

Defense
Six weeks ago,
FIELD POSITION Avg. FP-29.5 yd line, Rank- 77th National Ave-29.6
FINISHING DRIVES Pts. Per Trip in 40 -- 3.38, Rank- 14th, National Ave-4.36

After Miami game,
FIELD POSITION Avg. FP- 29.9 yd line, Rank 85th, National Ave- 29.5
FINISHING DRIVES Pts. Per Trip in 40 -- 3.8, 22th, National Ave-4.41

Offense
Six weeks ago,
FIELD POSITION Avg. FP-29.7, Rank 66th, Ave 29.5
FINISHING DRIVES Pts. Per Trip in 40-- 5.49 - Rank 4th, Ave 3.38

After Miami game,
FIELD POSITION Avg. FP-28.5, Rank 97th, Ave 29.9
FINISHING DRIVES Pts. Per Trip in 40--5.19-Rank 10th, Ave 3.8

Field Position. Average Starting Field Position (unadjusted) and FP+ (adjusted). This is mostly self-explanatory, with one important note: An offense is measured by its defense's starting field position, and vice versa. Special teams obviously play a large role in field position, but so do the effectiveness of your offense and defense. So in the team profiles, you'll find Defensive Starting FP in the offensive section and Offensive Starting FP in the defensive section.

Finishing Drives. Points Per Trip Inside the 40 (unadjusted) and Redzone S&P+ (adjusted). Also mostly self-explanatory. These measures look not at how frequently you create scoring opportunities, but how you finish the ones you create. And yes, for the purposes of these stats, the "red zone" starts at the 40, not the 20.

From: The 2015 Advanced College Football Stats Glossary

If you win the field position battle (using average starting field position), you win 72 percent of the time.
If you win the drive-finishing battle (using points per trip inside the 40), you win 75 percent of the time.

Appreciated. I am guessing this type of scheme is used a lot in high school and lower college divisions, were the passing quality isn't there.

Its definitely used more the lower you go, but its still never used a great amount, at least from the parts of the country I saw. It's actually kind of suprising considering how effective it is. I guess the big thing is that the more teams use it, the more used to defending it teams get and then it becomes less effective.

Tends to be used by teams with a talent gap. You can make up for lack of size/athleticism with scheme
