Please list all of the times an ILB ran in a straight line for 40 yards last year in the NFL. I'll wait.

Exibit A....

Speed is important. No matter how much many of us dismiss it on here, the guys paying the bills want fast guys.

Please take your "40 times don't matter" theory into an NFL war room and get laughed outta the room.

Gimmie a break. It's a speed league.

geez, is it bash all the blue and gold alum today??

You know me by now...LOL.

Not bashing, just very dissapointed. Of course, I'm sure Manti and Zeke are as well.

Some like to smooth it over, I like to point it out.

Still love both those guys and hope they kick *** in the NFL.

Manti Te'o has been trending Worldwide on Twitter for the past 3 days straight. Insane.

And this is another reason he's gonna get picked apart.....He's a celeb.

So he'll get the bad when it's not fair, and some good when it's not deserved.

I'm pretty confident that he's the second coming of London Fletcher. Great leader, not great athletic skill, that is a solid force in the right system.

Many NFL guys wonder why OL, DL, and LB prospects still run the 40 YD. They have said over and over that it is the ten yard split that really matters for these positions. I am not sure if they post those breakdowns for all of us to see, but I am betting that that split is looked at more than the overall forty is.

Yes it is a speed game - on the outside. On the inside it is a quickness and power game.

You have nothing to answer my requests. Vontaze Burfict and Brandon Spikes say hello to your theory and laugh at the NFL war room.

And the 40y dash is the end all metric for determining "speed"? How often does a LB ever run 40 yards in a straight line during a game?

It's perfectly reasonable to say that 3-cone, shuttle and 10-yard split times are far more relevant to LBs than the 40.

Sean Lee, James Laurinaitus, Rey Maualuga all ran above a 4.8 and Navarro Bowman ran a 4.77

I mean Cushing even only ran a 4.73 and he was a mutant on steroids.

Whiskey lets go the war room together and get laughed at! We can console each other after.

Remember, this is real time, not ficticious player biog time.

I remember this same conversation last year, and the year before . . .

Everybody was shocked how much slower Harrison Smith was that when he was in high school; and how slow his combine time was. How is his career working out?

so he was faster in high school than he is after 4 years at ND? clocked a 4.6 in high school and now a 4.8 at combine?

See?

Sorry, irishpat... the only things important for a LB in the 40 are the 10 and 20 yard splits. Mind you, running an "average" time like Manti did isn't going to help him... but people are overestimating the hurt. There is a strong correlation between 40 times and success (look at pro bowl ILBs from last year)... but it's not causation. It has more to do with overall athleticism.

His 20 yard shuttle time? Measuring lateral quickness? You know, how linebackers actually move? Destroyed Ogletree. Wasn't even close... beat him by nearly 2 full tenths of a second.

3 cone? A smidge better Ogletree.

So the only guy he is actually competing against as a prospect was significantly better than him in the 40, significantly worse than him in the shuttle, and slightly worse in the 3 cone.

How exactly is his draft stock taking a big hit from anyone in the profession who has a brain?

My thought as well, but seeing this nonsense regurgitated by NFL "experts" is depressing, to say the least.

His ten yard and his shuttle were better than Tyler Eiferts.

Didn't Jerry "The GOAT" Rice run a 4.7?

I'm watching the NFL channel coverage and only see the DL. Is there somewhere else to watch other things going on?

I believe it was added to the front page of this thread

I think they are done for the day with onfield drills. What you are watching is a replay from earlier today. NFL.com will have some video if you want to watch Te'o.

Manti was sixth in the 3 cone (7.13) and was sixth in the 20 yard shuttle (4.27). Point being, he has that short area quickness. Just doesnt have the long speed people go ape $hit for.

Te'o did beat Luke Kuechly by .01 in the 10 yard -- 1.62 versus 1.63.

(Although LK killed him in every other category).
