We have a thread for general football team news. I thought we could use this for happenings around campus.

For starters, the Basilica is currently getting new slate floors. Here are a few pictures. I'll miss the old, carpeted floors but I think this will really look sharp.

To prevent sneaking to confession in dress shoes... foot stomps now part of the penance.

I heard there has also been talk of installing a jumbotron above the main altar.

I expected an update on the latest persecution of the Catholics by the Lions.

That's usually why places use carpet: to help absorb noise. That's why restaurants use carpet in everywhere but the bar, which only uses a hard surface to make wet cleanups easier.

If the cheerleaders would pass through the assembled crowd they might collect enough Apple TVs and used Subway sandwiches for Kelly to fuse a vision of the future sufficient to feed the masses.

It's gotta be easier than the miracle he pulled off with Rees.

hello,

I want to go on in university of ND in south bend.
I want to ask some question about south bend. I will be thankful if you answer me.
1. how is the life in south bend, is it safe place to live for single man?
2. how is entertainment there, can I found night clubs and bar even if strip club there to enjoy my free time?
3. how is the behavior of people there toward international students?
4. and how is the over all type of people can I join parties and find some partner to enjoy easily or not ?

Thank you so much,

he should just say how he really feels and stop holding back so much.

It's amazing how tenure can make someone so insubordinate.

But seriously, I think it's a debate worth having (whether the University is moving away from its "true" mission in favor of development, athletics, etc.). The two aren't mutually exclusive, but I think Miscamble is right in that the Jenkins administration has been very one-sided.

Jenkins very willingly complied with the HHS mandate (which would have cost $500K per day save the court outcome) which contradicted the conscience of the University. But yet he's willing to throw down $400 million to expand the campus. I know this will be an unpopular opinion on here, but that clearly reveals his priorities. I find that to be atrocious.

Definitely a debate worth having and while insubordinate, his passion is well meaning and commendable.

Very interesting. Not sure what the right answer is here, but I respect the traditional perspective and goals articulated by Fr. Miscamble. Just not sure that the athletic, academic, and spiritual goals of the University need to be mutually exclusive or even one subordinate to the other. I would hope that one bolsters the other, that should be the goal. In those cases where they are at odds clearly athletics is not the central mission of Notre Dame and that truth should never be in doubt.

A thought provoking article from Fr. Miscamble regarding the new campus construction (mostly the renovations to the stadium). I wanted to get other thoughts about this, though I think the response here will be predictable.

....

What is the predictable response that you expect? You seem to invite discussion but blow it off with that last sentence.

The stadium expansion was discussed from a sports perspective in the playing surface thread.

Again the seemingly contradictory "debate worth having" invite followed by the "I know this will be an unpopular opinion on here ..."

Are we just supposed to agree with you?

I'm not sure what your issue is? Didn't ND file a suit against ACA which they lost 2-1 in a lower court? Are you just pissed at Jenkins?

I don't see the connection between ACA and skyboxes? Would field turf and/or a jumbotron also cripple the school's mission?

Sorry I probably didn't phrase that well. ND complied with a mandate that violated the conscience of the University; they didn't pay the fine associated with standing up for religious freedom. Complying and not showing damages damaged their case to the 7th Circuit. But at the same time, Jenkins announced a $400 million renovation, highlighting the football stadium as the center of campus.

I feel like Jenkins' administration has focused more on putting up buildings and expanding campus outward at the expense of its Catholic mission. All 3 are important, not just the first 2. A jumbotron and field turf should have the purpose of promoting the expansion of campus and its Catholic mission. If we lose sight of these three goals moving in unison, we run the risk of becoming like Stanford. A great school with a good football program that has little impact on Catholicism. These goals moving in unison is what makes Notre Dame so great. Jenkins is primarily moving two of them. I used the ACA/mandate to highlight a specific instance (and a very unacceptable one, IMO) to back up my point.

I figured this would be an unpopular opinion on here because this is primarily a football board. My perception is that the majority of posters don't hold this view and very much like the stadium expansion. Notre Dame's Catholic mission isn't as popular of a topic around these parts.

Better?

I'm not positive, but I don't think the 2-1 ruling against ND was on the suit itself, but on the injunction against compliance. Basically, ND was saying "can we NOT comply in the meantime while the suit proceeds?" and the courts said no. The suit itself is proceeding but ND has to comply until it's decided.
