Would it make this the most least active thread ever in a commitment lol?

Set an announcement date of 1/28 ... sounds like he is still in a hold position and waiting to see whether we'll be able to take him.

Oregon, Vandy and FSU are the other schools in play. Oregon and ND consider him an athlete who could play either DB or WR. Vandy and FSU want him at WR.

Williams' composite score is 0.8609. That would make him the lowest ranked player in our class.

Since we don't need bodies at WR or DB, I'm puzzled as to why the staff continues to pursue him.

I think they like his versatility on the field and his character and academics off the field, so they figure he is a good backup plan if they end up with an extra spot. He says that he and Booker have grown really close during the recruiting process.

That would make normally make sense, but since our 2014 class is projected to be pretty small as it is, I'd be more inclined to save the scholarship. That is, unless the staff thinks this guy is seriously underrated.

Consider the Calabrese v. Fox debate. There's no doubt in my mind that a 5Y for Calabrese would be a better idea than taking Williams.

I will agree that he is a back up plan but it seems I like this kid a lot more than most.

If there is an open spot I would take him.

Why? (1) We're full at WR and DB; (2) he'd be the lowest rated recruit in our class; and (3) the scholarship would be better spent on a marginal 5Y, thereby saving a spot in the 2014 class.

Good thing we trust in our coaches ability to rank talent and not rivals, scout, espn, etc...

I present you, Tyler Eifert... 3* Recruit who just one the Mackey over

Logan Thomas 4*
Arthur Lynch 4*
Philip Lutzenkirchen 4*
Levine Toilolo 4*
Dion Sims 4*

+ 18 other 3* recruits that were ranked above Eifert.... Also, keep in mind this doesn't include any tight ends that were not apart of Eiferts 2009 recruiting class...

I didn't question the staff's competence as talent scouts; I simply stated that their continued pursuit of Williams was puzzling to me, for the reasons I listed.

Then Sherm and Lucci both said that they'd take him. I asked them what their reasons were for that. That's a reasonable topic for discussion on a fan message board, no?

Lastly, pointing out one of the rare recruits who has wildly outperformed expectations doesn't invalidate recruit rankings. There are exceptions to every rule.

What if we don't fill that spot next year? i hate not having a full 85 scholarships.

Kid seems like a versatile athlete and a great human being. Even if he only plays special teams his entire career, he would be a great asset to the team just for being a team player and great person. These are the type of young men you want in your locker room.

Whiskey you are looking at it solely by numbers and math, not looking at what else the person can bring to the team and the university.

Just wondering what did you get your degree in at ND? Accounting? finance? Mathematics? Statics?

Nobody wanted to accept Corey Clement's commitment either, now I wish we had.

Whiskey, I'll definitely go this far with you. I'd rather have Calabrese than Williams for sure. I think the staff's rationale is that there is a lot still up in the air in terms of potential 5Ys and the NFL and career-ending injuries. We could easily have a spot for Calabrese and every 5Y who both wants to come back and is invited back, and still have a spot for Williams. Say 1) Martin and Wood go pro, 2) Hegarty and Nichols take medical schollies, 3) James and Mattingly decommit/get dropped, 4) Slaughter can't come back. Assuming AQM and Redfield are in, we've still got a full FIVE spots left in that scenario. Even if Bryant, Folston, Treadwell and Vanderdoes are all in (unlikely we get all of them), we've still got a spot for Williams, who could be a valuable flex guy and "program kid" (the phrase Coach Kelly used about Heggie -- I gather it means hard worker and high-character guy).

So I think it makes sense to keep communication with Williams open, in case there's a spot for an RKG on signing day.

Maybe the coaches view him like they viewd Farley, as a raw athlete with a high upside?

Otherwise I am on board with you on bringing back another 5th year player and using the scholarship for next year.

Is this really a concern, since the 2014 class will likely only have room for ~18 kids?

Kid seems like a versatile athlete and a great human being. Even if he only plays special teams his entire career, he would be a great asset to the team just for being a team player and great person. These are the type of young men you want in your locker room.

I was curious why you and Lucci liked him. Why do you think he's a "great human being"?

Whiskey you are looking at it solely by numbers and math, not looking at what else the person can bring to the team and the university.

You know I'm big on objective analysis. Three (relatively) objective stats-- our current scholarship #s at WR & DB, our projected class size for 2014, and Williams' rankings-- indicate that this would be a strange commitment to accept.

You're apparently very big on Williams' quality as an individual. I know nothing about him other than the statistics above and his film. That's why I asked what you liked about him.

Just wondering what did you get your degree in at ND? Accounting? finance? Mathematics? Statics?

Nice congrats on being an attorney. I was way off.

Just from what I've read and what others have posted he seems like a great kid. Like Emcee said a "program kid."

So that's it.

Was away from my desk so I'll get back to you on your question. When I look at his junior highlights (keeping in mind the highlights on the first page are sophmore year) I like his big play ability. Also I love having a bunch a athletes on the team where you can plug and play. He's got great size to be a cornerand he's big enough to play safety. Skilled enough for receiver. He's not number one on my list in fact there are multiple guys ahead of him but in my realistic scenario he fits. I think we lose James and Danny. Which leaves us with four spots. I think we get AQM, Redfield, and Bryant. Which basically leaves a 4th spot for Vanderdoes, Folston, Hollins, Williams, Duarte, etc. Don't think we get Vanderdoes which would be my number one. Hollins is a big long shot at this point since a visit hasn't even been scheduled if we want Duarte we should stick with mattingly. So, that leaves it to Williams and Folston. Folston is a stud but like my original post said we have carlisle for 3 years. I'd like an athlete last. Now go ahead guys and massacre me for saying I don't want Folston.

Doubt Oregon would take him if it's true that they only have one more spot. He is where on our list? 6 at the highest,8-9 more likely? A lot would have to not happen for us to take him, right?

Edit: with that said, there is something about this kid that I really like. I would be excited if he ended up Irish

Yeah, I think he is pretty far down our list. If we miss on Folston and no other highly rated skill position player presents himself, we might be able to take Juwaan, depending on 5Ys and medical schollies. (see my post #46 above on this)

Like you I like Juwaan a lot though. True RKG and good athlete. If things don't work out with Folston I would love to snag this one.

I want him simply because he goes to the HS I graduated from. Also where Slaughter went to HS. Great school to build a pipeline of sorts to. Lots of talent there every year.
