Yeah I mean they’ll probably get walked if they continue to bring best on best in 2026 and 2028 but Czechia, Switzerland, Slovakia, Germany field teams in Worlds. Just won’t be all NHL players. Clearly the Olympics will be individuals countries and the indication 2028 will likely be as well

Binnington should not have been the pick, Blackwood/Thompson would have been much better picks. Binnington's high danger sv% is lower, and his goals saved above expected is also lower. Binnington has the flashy name so of course Hockey Canada went with him.

Well we just watched the game haha

lol Quebec would get dumpstered, like not a competitive roster, which I wouldn't mind at all. You'd have a much better Team Minnesota than Team Quebec.

8 teams made up of only NHL players can not be made up of countries other than CA/US/SWE/RUS/FIN. Czechia only has 22 players currently.

Would have to do something like the 2016 tourney. U23 Team NA would be awesome.
We will see what they do. I am hopeful. I can't skate but I enjoy watching from time to time. International puck is the best way to grow the game in the US. A freaking exhibition tourney with 2-3 days of practice basically captures the sport world of the USA just because of the letters on the front of their jerseys and (honestly brilliant) idea to fight the Canadians when the puck dropped.

NHL is ass at marketing but this was awesome. Still so pissed that the snowback goalie decided overtime was the right time to go nuts.

They can do some fun variations on it, Team minnesota one year, Team Massachusetts the next, dick around with it. And yes I want Team Quebec to make an appearance

I'm cool if they want to let teams bring guys in that aren't NHL. But the number of teams should be no more than 8. That way you can do two separate four team pools to determine who plays in the championship. It's an all-star break, we have to be realistic about how many games we want them to play.

You mentioned awhile back that you played some. What position and level were you able to play?

I only played street hockey and in gym, I played floor hockey. The older kids made me play goalie because nobody wanted to take those hard plastic pucks to the bare skin in that chilly gymnasium 😆 🤣

I think this was an outstanding move my hockey.

At best I'm an extremely casual hockey fan and it had my attention for a week and a half. Not sure if someone already came up with this idea but maybe we can have 2 four team pools in the future and the winners play for the title? Or top 2 in each play in a single elimination tourney? IDK might be too much but I think this obviously dances circles around any other major sports all star festivities

That was a lot of fun! Great atmospheres/effort - very few events capture my undivided interest for a sport I don't follow closely like this did.

Thought Sean McDonough was a fantastic listen for hockey. (vs football (n)). Is this an opinion true hockey fans share?

Me and friends were throwing around ideas.

Russia needs to play as well.

They could make an "assorted" Europe team (would be mostly Czech probs)

Could let Quebec have a team (let the player choose if he wants to play for Canada or Quebec)

Could let the NCAA put in an all-star team (doubt their coaches would like that though)
Quebec could have a team right now and there would only be one player that would have to choose teams. I’m really disappointed with how far hockey in Quebec has fallen.

How about a Minnesota team?

I like the assorted European team. Maybe call it the “continental” team or something like that.

Beat me to it lol

Minnesota would include all those Canadians who went to school in Faribault, right? Gotta capitalize on Shattuck, those guys kept me off the Southeast MN U-16 Elite team after I made the U-15, they owe something to our state.

I found it ironic that the team Canada honorary captain, Wayne Gretzky, is one of the main reasons we are competitive with Cananda today in hockey. His trade to the LA Kings propelled hockey on the west coast to unthinkable levels including the formation of a second So Cal franchise the Ducks. As a kid no one in Orange Co, CA played hockey before that yet one of my high school teammate's sons, who was born during the Kings '93 Stanley Cup run went on to play at St Cloud State and for the Calgary Flames. We just had two OC boys drafted in the 1st round in 2024 including Zeev Buium who lives on the street next to me. The talent pool, which is evident by the USA's recent performances in the World Junior Championships is deep, so Canada better get theirs's now.

He’s also very Americanized. Works on TNT and has houses all over the USA. I think at least 3.

This captured a lot of people's attention, and the recent political undertones of the last few weeks had a lot to do with that.

Can the NHL keep people's attention spans now for the long term. March Madness is right around the corner. This will all be in the rearview sooner than later with how our society and news cycle functions.

I think Brady Tkachuk unfortunately is lost in Ottawa, but I can see people remembering guys like Larkin, Eichel, Slavin and Matthew Tkachuk come playoff time as “cool those guys were good for Team USA”

Assuming they're watching.

Hockey fans were watching before, they watching during and they'll watch after. Will new fans that came into the fold keeping watching for the next 4 months?

Keep watching for 4 months, no. But return come playoffs? I think potentially yes NHL could see a measurable bump. Especially with the NBA in shambles.

The key IMO isn't to keep attention now. The key is to get some casual dormant hockey fans (people like me) to tune in more often and pick up some younger people to take an interest in hockey in general.

People aren't going to become big NHL fans overnight. But you can certainly use that tourney to spark some interest. I am not joking when I tell you I only recognized two American names, and that's because their dad was good when I was little.

20-25 years ago I probably could have told you which team every Team USA guy played for, at least the forwards and goalies. But the Flyers have been so bad for so long now....I doubt I've watched an NHL game in ten years. Now I just got some juice in my veins. I'll probably watch a few playoff games.

Next, getting younger people interested is important to *every* sport. Hockey is already growing in the US, new sheets of ice are getting built everywhere.

Hockey is still relatively niche. Anything that "mainstreams" it at all ultimately pays dividends down the road for the NHL. Tourney was elite PR, whoever had the idea needs a raise, way better than a classic all-star game.

EDIT: Anytime me and friends played NHL '98 and we wanted to use the best guys, we played as a country...not the respective conference/captain selected all-star teams. This very good idea was hiding in plain sight all these years.

I attended my first NHL game on NYE in St. Paul, it is very fun (also pricey). Would recommend anyone with kids to check out their local minor league team. It's fun, the kids are probably the top 1-2% of hockey players, and it's affordable.

The team in Fargo consistently outdraws the D1 basketball team down the road that has a way nicer arena.

If you got a local D1 hockey team, they are also fun and generally affordable. No need to understand hockey well, ask the guy next to you questions. My experience is they are *always* happy to explain things down to the most basic stuff.

4Nations was a ratings bonanza! This may answer the debate I was having with friends whether NHL franchises with the rights to the players would allow the tournament to continue. The tournament was more intense than anyone I think could have imagined and now several players are banged up and might be lost for the rest of the NHL season. We shall see if this will continue in the same format.

Cale Makar was even shamed into playing when he stated mid-tourney he wanted to instead rest up for the rest of the season.

Every game where your country's name is on your chest should be intense.
This. It's why having a dominant US program is so key to Canadian success. 2006 should never happen again.

I love the style of play that the US is leaning into. The days of trotting out grinders is over. There's incredible skill talent in all the positions, the Hughes brothers, Tkachuk brothers, Fox, Papi, Will Smith coming, Faber, Caufield (fuck the habs), and Leonard on his way. Tons of good talent.

I'm not sure what the rivalry is like within ND and MINN but the Wild have a good team with some American's who'll be fixtures on the national team.

I would guess Minnesota hockey fans take it much more serious/personal as the state of hockey and it's contribution to Team USA over the years via local kids and their college teams.

I don't know if a North Dakotan has ever made the national team. North Dakota hockey fans are almost all Sioux fans, and that program has historically been very heavy on Canadians. Would be interesting to poll the state and see whether the fans would rather have UND win a championship or Team USA to win the Olympics.

Not sure who's paying attention if you aren't a fan, but the Blackhawks have called up all their defensive prospects the last month and they look like they belong!
Their entire blue line is under 22 years old including two teenagers and they look good.
Let's add Misa and a top line winger to play with 98 and get to .500 next year!!!

Does anyone think the Bruins tear it down and do a complete rebuild? Just trying to imagine Pastrnak on Bedard's wing next year.

I hope they do an entire tear down of the front office. Loved Neely as a player but he’s no good upstairs. Sweeney needs to go as well obviously.

Not sure they’ll trade Pasta but things probably need to get worse before they get better.

Very interested in what goes down in the sens leafs series tomorrow. Easily the most intriguing playoff going on right now, of any sport… been fun thus far
