Seems a bit like asking if you'd rather have ebola or Lou Gerhig's Disease. They are both terrible. I'd say that if the Rice video and its aftermath never happened, we would not be talking about AP right now, even though he whipped a 4-year-old kid with a stick, which is a hideous thing to do, IMO. When my kids were that young, not letting them watch Sponge Bob usually was enough to sway poor behavior.

I've heard a lot of talk about "the way we raise boys," implying that violence towards women is the result of over disciplining youth, but I think it's exactly the opposite. Violence towards women is the result of a lack of discipline, not an excess of it. Manhood isn't being taught by fathers so kids are learning it from pop culture.

Violence toward women and violence toward kids are too sides of the same coin. If I hit my son with a stick am I teaching him discipline or am I teaching him that the appropriate solution to someone's poor behavior is to hit them with a stick? Violence breeds violence. In cases of violence against women or youth, it seems to me that it is a lack of respect for the abused that allows one to justify that it is OK to raise a hand to another person.

Really not sure I like that the league is turning to paid time off as a way to mitigate public outrage. Doesn't seem like that strong of a message.

If it is so acceptable, why does it stop when kids grow up? If you come into the office late and your boss smacks you across the ass with a switch, what would be your reaction? Why is it OK to hit kids with wooden spoons but not adults who do stupid crap? Is it because an adult would not tolerate such idiotic violent behavior? Of course you didn't like being hit with a wooden spoon -- who the f*ck would?

October begins BCA and the NFL sells those pink jerseys with proceeds being donated. However, only 5% is actually donated. Every year this gets a light mention in the media. After everything that has happened thus far, I can't imagine it not gaining more traction and RG is the one that will have to answer for it. Could that be the final nail in the coffin?

A couple points...

1. That 5% thing has been debunked. Yes, 5% of the purchase price is donated directly, but the remainder of proceeds from that merchandise (less cost of goods sold) is used to fund the "Crucial Catch" awareness program. The NFL does not profit from the sale of that merchandise.

2. The NFL owes breast cancer research roughly $0.00 (adjusted for inflation). Any amount they donate is an act of charity, not an obligation. It would be pretty sick to go after a for-profit enterprise for donating a bunch of money to charity, just not a big enough bunch of money.
