The NFL has dropped the ball on this. I don't condone the drug use of Josh Gordon but it's still on non-violent crime. He gets a year while Ray Rice brutally attacks his fiancée on video and he gets only a 2 game suspension. Wow!

Ray Rice should not only be banned from playing in the NFL but he should be in prison.

That's disgusting. Ray Rice should be ashamed, as should Roger Goodell. Goodell is a complete assclown.

To the lawyers here: what is the legal line between self-defense and domestic abuse? She was slapping him and appeared to be moving forward to attack him at the end. Did he have the legal right to "defend" himself?

Yes, I would hope a 230 lb man who is complete muscle is allowed to defend himself by knocking out his 110 lb fiancee as she approaches to attack him after having slapped him. (this isn't direct at you tussin)

He should be kicked out of the NFL. I don't care if people think that's over the top. You want to send a message, boot him. Or give him a year long suspension. Drop the f*cking hammer on this guy. That can't ever be tolerated.

I really can't blame the NFL here, all the blame needs to be at the feet of the DA's office that let this asshole off with a slap on the wrist. I think the NFL and the Ravens are going to end up doing the right thing and hammer this guy hard. The DA however needs to be fired.

I agree with your sentiment. Just saying, there have been successful legal defenses for much worse.

"I don't think he has very much support now at all," the player texted. "I think it's gone."

The player added that one reason the locker room stood behind Rice was because Rice gave them the impression that he was defending himself from her (as ridiculous as the notion is of a weaponless, petite woman being a threat to a pro athlete). The video, the player said, betrays what Rice told players.

I haven't watched the video, but based on the way you described it, no, he had no right to punch her. The amount of force you use in self-defense can't be out of all proportion to the force you are threatened with. There's no way he could reasonably believe that he had to punch his fiancee to protect himself, assuming she didn't have a weapon or anything. At best, it was a retaliatory act. The law doesn't protect retaliation.

This is a situation where common sense dovetails with the law. But I don't blame you for asking ... Lord knows there are plenty of situations where it doesn't.

He deserves it. You can't call it self defense when he attacked first and he was lunging at her. I am happy as a Ravens fan that they let him go.

I think the NFL, The Players Union and Ray Rice need to consult womens groups for a course of action on how he can rehabilitate and publicly redeem himself. Definitely think they need to work more on a solution to this very important issue that seems to be prevalent in the NFL than just firing him.

NFL says the prosecutors did not turn over that video and they did not know it existed until today. That is why they extended the suspension from 2 games to indefinite. Not sure how he redeems himself unless he does tie himself to women's groups and tries to become allied with them to prevent this in the future. His NFL career may be over.

Gotta believe Greg Hardy of the Panthers is crapping his drawers too. Judge found him guilty and he appealed to a jury trial which will be after the season. NFL did not hand down any punishment since he is appealing. He was Franchised this year and is making a ton of money. But if he is suspended for the first 6 games of next season, and if a jury trial lets out all sorts of sordid details, he may not have any contract extended to him by any NFL team next season. Panthers likely will not as Jerry Richardson is extremely aware of public opinion and is still sick to his stomach over the Ray Carruth matter where he had his pregnant girlfriend shot and killed and the baby barely survived. Hardy should have never appealed the Judge's ruling and simply accepted the punishment handed down by Goodell.

Touchy subject, but something that definitely needs to be addressed. First, I've never hit a woman and as the father of five daughters, I'm completely opposed to and disgusted by abusive behavior towards women. However, does that give women free rein to attack or hit us without fear of retaliation? If you're tough enough to throw a punch, you're tough enough to take one, as a friend of mine used to say about the matter.

I've seen the Rice video. Given the disparity in size and strength, his punch is clearly excessive and vicious. On the other hand though, she'd struck him shortly before and appears to be about to do so again. Is he supposed to just stand there and let her? Let's say it's a couple where the guy isn't a muscled up 230 pound professional athlete and he and the woman aren't very different in size. Do you just let her hit you? How about if she keeps hitting you? How many shots do you take before you hit back? I honestly don't have a good answer. I'm totally opposed to violence against women, but it goes both ways and nobody should have to take a punch just because the person throwing it is female.

You certainly defend yourself... but when you're a cut out of stone athletic freak and she’s just an average woman… ‘defending yourself’ constitutes restraining her and or simply preventing her from harming you significantly, not going full on boxing match on her.

After seeing this on ESPN I believe this woman is in denial. There is no way that this is the first time domestic abuse has happened in their relationship. I posted a link to her comments below.

NFL player reps table vote on new drug policy - NFL.com

They tabled the vote yesterday.

The sticking points after the call weren't made completely clear, but issues over whether players will be punished upon DUI arrests (rather than convictions), and the appeals process on human growth hormone testing have persisted. The league would like to start HGH testing immediately. That would mean there wouldn't be a population study, and approval there might hinge on players' ability to challenge the science of the tests on appeal.

Though all aspects of the negotiation are fluid, there has been basic agreement in other areas:

1) There would be reform in marijuana testing. The threshold for the A sample is expected to be raised from 15ng/ml to match normal workplace standards in other businesses. Also, the first suspension for marijuana would be two games, rather than four.

2) Offseason violations for amphetamines would move from the policy on performance enhancing drugs to substances of abuse.

3) There would be reassessment of penalties already levied on players for drug violations during the 2014 league year.

It is possible, but not certain, that a vote could be taken on Wednesday. It's also possible the negotiations are tabled until 2015.
