Look up Ludwig. He's quietly impressive. Utah wins a lot of football games. He or Moorehead are probably the two best options unless they can get Johnson or Leftwich (with the understanding that they're NFL up and comers who probably don't stay that long).

Those would be my top 4 as well.

How were Ludwig's QB's and offenses at Vandy, Wisconsin, San Diego St., Fresno St., Cal, Cal Poly, etc.?

Again, he might do well as OC at ND. As I said, he could potentially be like a Todd Monken. But he has had a long career as an OC and QB coach and they all weren't as good as Utah's offense this past year.

It's sort of like the reverse of the Scott Frost convo people were wanting to have- a coach who was largely mediocre the bulk of his career and had a good run recently versus a coach who was good early in his career, then sucked recently. MF probably needs to evaluate the sum of any coach's career for this hire.

I think Ludwig could be a home run for the 2023 offense in that he fits like a glove schematically and can call plays. I don’t necessarily see it as a long term home run though. I think I would have to learn something I’m missing recruiting or QB development wise to call it that.

Yep, completely agree here.

I think a lot of guys could be successful as the OC for ND in '23 though.

There are multiple duds on Ludwig's resume that are worrisome, beyond being the '23 OC.

When you have a defensive minded HC I’m not sure there are any OCs that are long term options, per se. Bama rotates OCs every 1-3 years. Anyone who succeeds at a top 20 level will get a HC offer sooner rather than later. Anyone who fails gets fired.

Moorehead and Brady are 2 guys MF has to make them turn him down.

I think he should at least try and get interviews with Brian Johnson and Zac Robinson. Maybe Rich Scangarello too.

Absolutely no to Scangarello. He just got fired. Liam Coen? Yes

So does ND.

Sampson is fond of saying he's only ever covered 1 OC at ND who was in his 4th year (Mike Haywood, under Weis). Prister had this about past OC's going back to Ara (although they weren't called that prior to 1981) - this article was from when Tommy got hired as OC.

Nobody is a long-term option.

His Wisconsin offenses were among the best in school history. His Fresno offenses were also legit. He coaches david Carr and Brian Johnson.
His first time around at Utah he was a Broyles award finalist as OC.
Its been in relative anonymity but hes been doing a really good job for a really long time.

i know a lot of people on this board hates him but some people like him because i was watching his 8pm show with Ryan on top targets for the job and over 1.300 people were watching at one point
The content is fine. 3 hour long shows is unnecessary. Calling out guys like Steve Wiltfong and others isn't going to get him anywhere.

The guy puts out plenty of content. I had a stretch a while back where I listened daily. Finally couldn’t take the arrogance.

So, if we wind up with Ludwig or Moorhead, that's fine. I'm totally cool with that, and I think both would do really well as ND's OC. But, what I want is for ND to go out and make a statement with this OC hire. Go poach Ryan Grubb from Washington. Go steal Sean Lewis from Colorado. Go get Brian Johnson from the Eagles.

That list is full of good coaches so if that is a list of candidates with mutual interest then it seems unlikely we’ll be left with Parker or anything worse. I’m mostly interested in Ludwig, Candle, Moorhead, and Johnson for varying reasons.

People bag Parker a lot considering he turned Mayer from great to ferking great.
Was that Parker who did that, or Mayer? (Or Pyne's utter reliance on Mayer as a target?) I dunno. No knock on Parker, he seems fine. But even the other coaches were joking how he had the easiest job on the staff last year. There is little in his resume to suggest he's the best candidate to be our next OC. Compared with Moorhead or Ludwig or a few of the other names out there.

And going back to my comments on Ludwig...

I love his Utah offense. I also think his/Utah's ability to recruit the right players for Utah and develop them into Top 10 performers would play well with ND and how they have to value shop to some degree.

As somewhat of a Boisefile, didn't Ludwig recruit Bryan Harsin?

So is Harsin's buy out stips so big that he can't afford to coach?

My prediction.

MFMF will announce his OC hire at kickoff of the KelceBowl 1 and it will be none other than the man that made it happen... who may be tossing the coin if Mama Kelce turns down the gig.

People keep saying this, but do we actually know this to be true? Wouldn't it be ND's MO to do something like have $3M earmarked for Tommy, but the well be dry for actual upgrades at the position?

"earmark" = Money will not be an issue in resigning Tommy... Meaning, MFMF wanted the split and ND knew it was going in a different direction before Tommy won the Bama Powerball on it's 5th drawing. They knew they weren't gonna have to pay him so they did a save face to appear like big spenders.

(In my best Maury voice) The next OC at ND is NOT the highest paid OC in college football.
