Hansen and Tyler James are the Rivals hires. SB Tribune just saying f it? That’s actually good replacement for Rivals. James has never grinded the recruiting beat, if he picks it up, Hansen is better than Horka/Engel in team coverage IMO.

Good move by Rivals. I love their podcast. I think their age difference helps appeal to the entire fanbase. You’re right about James. He followed the recruiting closely but never grinned like Singer, Loy, Freeman. I could see them bringing Carter Karels on board to fill that need while Hansen/James focus on team reporting.

James seems very loyal to the newspaper industry which is dying on the vine. For his sake, he needs to make the jump if offered the Rivals gig.

James started at the SBT as the ND recruiting insider before moving up to beat reporter. Carter Karels then took his place as recruiting insider until SBT got rid of the position altogether and put the responsibility of recruiting news on Hansen. I don't know that James was ever a grinder like Singer or Loy but he developed relationships with a lot of recruits and had plenty of inside info.

Hansen/James have better insight, experience, history/knowledge...but idk if they'll make the content that the current Rivals guys are putting out. The younger guys have definitely been hustling.

Ideally, I'd like to see a blend of both old/new (makes me miss Singer and Lou Somogyi going back and forth).

It’s official. Although “Inside ND Sports” is sort of a dumb name.

lol tweeted and then deleted but managed to screenshot...DA BEEF

That kid is an absolute joker.

Not just stealing scoops and claiming the sources as his own, but straight up plagiarizing articles with no citation... then he claims he's getting "death threats" and coined a new term "twitterphobe" for people who tell him he's being scummy.

I talked to him a few weeks ago and explained why it was wrong and he seemingly had a real moment of clarity. The next day he was citing sources and being super legit.

That lasted about 24 hours... lol..

Clown.

Maybe this is a hot take as I am not sure what the board thinks of him, but Singer stinks and I barely view him a tier above Driskell. Anyone outside of the established Notre Dame beat I have noticed he's very rude and immature to.

He’s got good info but that whole site thinks their hot **** especially since the move to On3.

Loy can have a bit too much sunshine sometimes but seems like a nicer guy.

That's an understatement. Loy is the Solaire of the ND beat.

What was she doing before? Looks like she was already with On3Sports, but maybe in SEC territory?

She was on a couple of the Irish podcasts last year. Not bad, never read any of her stuff tho.

Stuff is getting spicy over on Irish Breakdown. It started with Driskell calling John Brice -- who is one of the more reputable coaching news reporters out there -- "click bait." So then Brice posted a screenshot of Driskell saying that Deland McCullough wasn't going to be the RB coach at ND. And now Driskell is war pathing about him being a "clout chaser" and also calling out ISD (who Brice does some work for in addition to FootballScoop) as "minor leagues". He then accused Brice of buying a membership to his site to steal his info (it would be really easy to prove this if true).

Brice is pretty good, IMO. He is a better writer, that is, he is better at writing, than many of the beat reporters.

That’s the funniest accusation in the history of media… there is a VERY clear paper trail of Driskell’s “sources” giving him breaking news and info about 15 minutes after every other reputable site broke news for like his first year and a half at IB.

Aka, he had no sources, and was just piggy-backing info from 247/ISD and giving it the old “sources confirm to me that…” and regurgitating what other places said.

It was the most transparent shit in the world.

I wish he wasn't such a prick...Driskell does have a lot of good takes/X' & O's stuff. Seems as he is doing less poaching, but can't attest to to source validity.

I'm a Huge Jamie U guy, but it seems like ISD is becoming an also ran with info lately.

I agree that the product at IB has gotten better. When Driskell started at "Maven" they had major issues with quality of content, etc. Stuff seemed written by high schoolers and was chalk full of errors / typos / etc. He has made major staffing improvements and "caught up" in the arms race with 247. I would say he has passed Rivals, and I would love to see what kind of membership On3 has. He has bad relationships with virtually everyone else that works on the beat and while he's no EJ Holland, it's unfortunate that people can't play nicer in the sandbox. There was no reason for him to call John Brice -- who has been a respected national reporter for decades well before he started doing any part time work focused on ND -- "click bait."

I think other parts of the animosity come from Mike Frank's end where he feels like he stuck his neck out for Driskell to give him another shot only to have him leave for greener pastures and then try to siphon off his membership. A lot of Mike's antics in how he runs his site can come off as antiquated or immature. He'll do things like complain about how he can't offer the same specials as other sites because he's not a large company with financing to run in the red for years; has to put food on the table; etc. but like... business is business. You have four companies trying to offer the same subscription service to the same clientele through the same medium. Of course there is going to be a turf war to try to capture as much market share as possible. He could've sold out if he wanted to and got a pretty pay day + salary.

Driskell needs a boss, supervisor, or someone to look up to, to hold him accountable and maybe direct his talents to where they're best used, and interact with people less.

My question is, who inside the Gug would be feeding him unless the SI tag got him some cred.

Was just thinking about this earlier this morning.

There are now 6 paid sites covering ND Football:

247
On3
Rivals
ISD
SI
NDInsider
