The team played out of their minds in the first Clemson game last year. I distinctly remember Etienne commenting how physical the team was when they held him to 28 yards rushing. It was mentally affecting their execution, he basically said they were running scared. Shutting down their running game was a big reason we won, because we weren't stopping that backup QB through the air often enough.

Then came the ACC CG. We clearly didn't have the same energy, and it's certainly hard to get up for a repeat game as the previous victor. Whether that lack of motivation is on the coaches, the players, or both I don't know. We didn't contain Etienne, he ran wild, and we were playing behind the entire game. Your playcalling changes when you're behind, and so does the spirit and morale of your players.

Clemson effectively flipped the script as we shut their run game down in the first game, then they did the same to us round 2 and ran all over us. We had to live and die by the running game last season because our WR position was struggling. We ran for close to 200 yards or more in every win last year save for Pitt (We exploited their horrendous secondary instead), but the games we struggled to run the ball...namely the last two of the season...we had no success or little in the case of Alabama. When you take away the run game our offense was completely inept because nobody really worries about our WRs they just have to worry about Mayer. The same thing is true this year, our WRs just aren't consistent...and unfortunately we have zero run game because the OL is struggling so much.

You can complain about Rees if you like, but replacing him isn't going to fix the root of the issue. He's shown he can dismantle a good defense in Iowa State when he had at least some talent at each skill position along with a decent OL. These last two years we've been lacking development and/or talent at the WR position and in the case of 2021 also the OL group. If you don't fix both before bringing someone in you're effectively damning whoever his replacement would be. If you were a talented OC that's hot on the market would you want to come to ND right now given the circumstances? Chances are we'd only entice a less talented individual that would set us back further.

Saw that. I mean, if he just made up those quotes he should lose his job. That should be completely unacceptable.

in fairness this happens in HS sports reporting ALL the time, even happened to me before (as a lowly HS soccer coach lol), but yeah its a bad look for a national media site.

Wow. So this whole controversy spurred the “Ole Miss Spirit” to end relationship with 247 and join On3. 247 renamed their Ole Miss site and retained one of the guys. The “OMS” is a couple of them without Yancy the guy who was in the controversy, presumably he is without job now.

Got a chance to meet him years ago at the University of Detroit Mercy when they renamed the court after him...such a nice guy. His personality is genuine, not just a TV persona.

And his love for ND is palpable; he saw my ND hat and said "Go Irish, baby!"

Patrick Engel of BGI is Ben Shapiro’s doppelgänger. Zero to do with politics but while he resembles Shapiro in looks his voice & cadence are almost identical. Engel needs to inject some personality into his on air voice.

If you weren't being such a slacker and staying home for that Cinci game you could have met him again. Irish#1, arndtjc, and I were sitting just a few rows behind him at the Cinci game in the box seats. We said hi to him on the way out.

You're right though, he's as wholesome and nice out in public. He's gone to my grandfather's church for years, always showing off his grand kids and has a big smile. Just an awesome dude.

Slacking is not the most appropriate word considering I was in the middle of a move haha but the FOMO was on another level that day.

That's awesome you got to meet him. I'll be sure to make it to the L'ville reunion, pt 2.

If I'm being honest, now I'm kind of salty that the resident UC fan in the group chat didn't get an invite to the box seats for the UC game lol

On a separate note: If you had to choose to sign up for one of these insider services, which one would you choose? Based off of twitter alone, I'm thinking ISD.

I'm very happy with ISD, both in content and the forum. I know several other guys here have an account on ISD.

ISD if you’re not looking to read any national stuff. 247 by far if you are

Honestly I thought you were going to get tickets with the family, so I reached out to Irish#1 and arndtjc first. I nearly gave up my ticket too because I couldn't get to the game until well into the 1st quarter.

damn right......IE remembers.

My family let me down! My FIL, who is a bigger UC fan than me, bailed for a last-minute golf trip with his friends, content with watching the UC/ND from their rental house during the day.

And if it makes you guys feel better, I was miserable during the entire game.

I thought I'd be happy with whatever happened, whether that was ND taking care of business and figuring some things out, or UC getting a historic win at the expense of my 1A team.

Instead, everything that happened just pissed me off. I was pissed at Jack Coan for that terrible INT to start the game, I was pissed at Tommy for putting Buchner in a bad spot... then I was pissed at UC when they started to blow the game.

I never want them to play each other again lol.

Roughly 20 years ago I got to watch my two favorite teams play. I grew up a Bears fan but had become just as much of a Colts fan. I thought going to Soldier field watching them would be like heaven. Instead every big play was just as you described. As I celebrate the long pass for a TD, I'm immediately cursing how the CB could've left the receiver wide open. Never felt so unsatisfied in my life.

I think we discussed this,… they did. Did you watch Thursday??? Those unis were from the early 80s.

These are the good clevland brown uniforms that they should be wearing with the right shade of orange on the helmet/uniforms (also no orange pants).
