ND's Talking Heads ... The good, bad & ugly

Currently watching the Cheez-It Bowl. Golic, Sr might be the worst color commentator I've ever heard. Talks too much, never funny, frequently incoherent. Not a good look for ND to have a prominent alum beclowning himself on ESPN like this. Would be nice if Swarbrick or Jenkins could get him pulled.

Probably a worse look if the President and AD reached out to get an alum fired.

Golic, Sr is not good. I felt like he had been coasting on a terrible schtick on M&M/G&W forever and can't do anything else outside of it. He talks like an old lady. Seriously, sounds like my MiL with a deeper voice. His analysis of *any* sports situation is incoherent, surficial, uncritical and out of date, oh but he's friendly af.

I think Jr is pretty good, and can be better, as long as espn doesn't try to shoehorn him into some focus-grouped stereotype.

LOL, now we've turned on Golic Sr. ND's biggest voice on the world wide leader for years.

... IE struggling heroically for something/someone to bitch about.

Golic not good at color-commentary anymore = Golic is from Notre Dame = Notre Dame is bad.

Lord help us.

I'm not the best to critique others' critiques on this topic being that I loved Tom Hammond so I won't try.

BUT

I think Sr. would be a natural in a Strahan role on a non-sports talk show. Maybe I like drunk uncles? Makes sense as my uncle is a real life teetotaler.

I could see that. I mean, I wouldn't watch it, but that kind of thing would probably be a better fit.

Golic's performance as a commentator is totally meaningless to ND. I seriously doubt that they care.

They obviously don't have that kind of pull, nor was I seriously suggesting that it happen. But the performance of any prominent alum is never "totally meaningless to ND".

My understanding is that his contract is up at ESPN and these will be the last games he does.

I should be nicer then.

Probably a worse look if the President and AD reached out to get an alum fired.

See above.

LOL, now we've turned on Golic Sr. ND's biggest voice on the world wide leader for years.

No one's suggesting that he be black-balled and impoverished. He's just been thrust into a role he's clearly not suited for, and I don't like seeing alumni perform poorly on national television. Given his success as a talk show host, I'm sure there are other roles ESPN could find for him.

Do you always move the goal post?

Your analogy wasn't applicable to Golic's situation at all.

ESPN moved him into a new role (fact), he's not doing it well (my opinion), and I don't like seeing high-profile alumni struggle on national television (also my opinion, but shouldn't be controversial). To which you responded with a devastating:

lOoK aT mR. pErFeCt HeRe, WhO iS gOoD aT eVeRyThInG oN hIs FiRsT tRy!

I'm obviously not good at everything at on my first try. But you can be damn certain I'm not going to do something on national television as a representative of ND unless I know I can do it well.

I guess that makes me an as$hole, though.

I don't understand what people wanted Kelly to say. "Yeah our players suck. We need better ones." Even if it's the truth and Kelly knows it he can't say that, and him giving the "right' answer doesn't stop him from trying his hardest to improve the personnel situation.

Hansen, Prister, and pretty much all of them had the same take though. I understand Kelly was pissed and all but I think he probably wishes he has that press conference back.

Sampson and Fortuna’s postgame pod was almost hard to listen to. Whiny. Sampson was obviously annoyed by BK and thinks he knows him and the program better than BK. Other national postgame pods on the other hand praised BK playing the way he had to and acknowledged ND still clearly had a great year.

Yeah but read their comments versus Driskell's article. There's a big difference between what they said and what he said.

Yes. Agreed. Driskell is smooth as sandpaper. But just sayin he’s not alone on his thoughts. It wasn’t a great look.

I thought they had one of the better approaches to it. They said there were clearly two issues people have been talking about that others seem to take as one issue.

First, did ND deserve to be there/were they actually good, to which they answered as a resounding yes. We are a really good team and had the best resume and arguably the best chance against the top 3 teams.

But the second issue was whether we are on a path that can actually result in us beating Alabama. If we are, what do we still need to do? If we aren't, then what is the strategy that can?

I feel like so many of the national guys just gave us a pat on the head and a gold star for trying. They defended the team saying that style was our only way of possibly winning without saying whether it could ever actually be successful. They say its the right choice because it raised our odds of winning from 1% to 1.5%, but they don't say if it can ever get us closer to a coin flip. The national guys discussed what was best for this team while the local guys want to know what is best for the program.

Agree with everything you said in the actual points they made, it was just soiled with sour grapes and saltiness at BK. For every 8 mins of real analysis you got a min of small digs that could have gone without. I guess recording a pod the night of a game comes with the same emotions as a press conference right after. Just seemed to circle a bit too much around the presser open wounds.

I thought Fortuna and Sampson did a great job at explaining how ND could reach another level while maintaining their ND identity.

Bryan Shapiro getting dragged on Twitter by Kelly's kid is hilarious. Bunch of other ND beat guys like Sampson were tweeting memes and retorts which is never not amusing AF

you mean driskel?

He mean's Bryan 'Shapiro' Driskell lol.

He's the type of guy that wants to call everyone "snowflake" and stir the pot and try to hurt feelings and then say "I'm just telling you what everyone else won't."

If Fox News had an ND beat reporter, Driskell would be all over it.

Sort of tangential to ND Football, but I know some of you will find this interesting:

Isn't NBCSN pretty huge for futbol and hockey?

Yep.

For NBC, it also is part of a bigger strategy to grow its Peacock streaming service, while, at the same time, bolstering the programming schedule for other NBC channels like USA Network. Bigger properties, like the NHL, NASCAR and EPL, will move to USA Network while keeping some windows on the broadcast channel. Smaller properties, like car shows, dog shows and some motorsports, will have to find new linear TV outlets.
