The whole "only use our rivals' famous alumni as announcers" thing really sucks when we are terrible, but when we're on a pretty good roll, it's really nice.

We're basically paying Purdue's all-time best QB to come to our games in a suit and talk about how good we are. It's a weird flex, but it's our flex.

I'm sure Brees will be fine and I do like him, but NBC is sticking yet another former player from a rival school on the broadcast

I don’t know. Flutie has got the whole little brother thing going on. Him against the world and he views ND as part of that world. I don’t get that vibe from Brees. The dude has been celebrated so much for so long and he’s, seemingly, kept a very level head I don’t think we’ll get that type of attitude from him.

The stuff that matters about Brees:

Dude's 100 % class.

He was 1-2 as a starter vs ND.

IF the 2020 season doesn't happen, his second game for the ND network will be his Boilers in South Bend.

Article also mentions Turico moving out on a pretty quick timeline. What play by play guy would they bring in? Really none come to mind.

With NBC (and really all the networks) it's going to have to be someone in-house. Probably Burmeister again.

Oh for sure and I don't believe its anything malicious by NBC, just coincidence that its been USC, BC and Purdue guys sequentially. I like Brees and my only reddish flag is that he's never done the job, more so than being a Boilermaker.

I think Burmeister will be fine. Brees probably does it for 2-3 years and moves into the NFL Sunday Night Game. That should be just enough time for Kirk Cousins to get prepped as his replacement.

Well who else did you think it was gonna be???

After listening to some of Brian Smith's podcasts I can tell you right now he knows more about how to target and understand what a fit for ND is than most.

That or he's reading my shiit.

Sounds like he's dialed in with Caleb Johnson's family so that will be interesting to follow along.

He also likes Mike McLaughlin, a 6-7.5 OT from FL who committed to Miami. He's originally from Indy and was interested in ND.

He guaranteed ND would flip one or maybe 2 players currently committed elsewhere.

Let's see what ya got Brian...

I’m assuming this is a different Brian Smith than our ex-LB?

Yep. And that's the first thing that ran through my mind too.

Not sure how how his pieces for SI/Irish Breakdown work. Seems I see a lot of free stuff tagged in Driskell's tweets but it has to be paid at some point right?

People complain about Driskell, I have no idea if it's warranted. I never heard any of his podcasts or read his message board / stories behind a paywall. I thought their podcast about OL recruiting struggles was very honest and 75% spot on. I'm going to post in the OL thread today and see if we can have a virus free discussion.

That's too bad, I'll just have to piece together twitter/IG scraps on them too.

Hopefully Smith keeps his personal podcast page up. I like his format, quick blasts on fewer topics. I don't have to invest an hour of time into drawn out hot air sessions.

THIS is good to know, I had only heard 1 pod cast and that is why I came here to see if anyone else had more exposure to him. He did rub me the wrong way a bit, but maybe that is because he was on with Driskell and I have soured on him. I hope he is onto something with the flips and C Johnson.

No prob

Here's his latest take on why Florida is so loaded with talent and different. Interesting stuff but I don't think it answers why it's better than TX or CA (or if it is) but still good to hear about the Lake Okeechobee region in particular.

I agree with a lot of that, but I think it's more due to football culture in Florida, our large population, and the nice weather that allows year-round practice. He touched on those things, but I think they are more important than "oh, these kids in Belle Glade just want it more."

One thing he's absolutely right about is the abject poverty down near the sugar cane fields and the importance of football there. In fact, this is all sort of related to one of my biggest complaints about FSU and their terrible black athlete graduation rate. Not every kid goes to the NFL. FSU gets these poor black kids from south Florida that have nothing, makes $100 million annually on their backs, and then doesn't work to make sure they graduate and at least have a semblance of an education when they are finished. Those kids come from nothing, FSU chews them up and spits them out, and then they go back to nothing. It's infuriating to know that football could be a vehicle for helping these guys escape that life, but the school does not care to foster that. (I live in Tally and have for like 15 years.)

Maybe Somogyi can lure him to BGI. They can’t seem to keep anybody around for long these days.

I grew up reading BGI b/c my dad had a yearly subscription. He still receives it b/c he’s too stubborn to learn how the internet works.

At one time, they had Somogyi, Prister & Sampson on staff at the same time. They usually had a former ND coach that contributed as well. Bob Chmiel may have been the last one but the RB Coach from the Ara days who coached at ND forever was also on staff. His name escapes me but his tenure spanned quite a few HC.

How things have changed...

My Dad is 62 and might be the last paying subscriber to Sports Illustrated's magazine. Numerous times I've tried to get him into the Athletic site/ app, but the boomer won't budge.

That’s him. Thank you...was driving me nuts trying to remember his name. I believe he was the RB coach. You’re correct, his insight was invaluable.
