She did not play in any game in 17-18, and she only played in 4 games this past year before being injured the entire season.

Like Tranquill, let's hope she's got her injuries out of the way.

Fingers crossed that this player is in full physical recovery. Reports are saying that she definitely has two years of eligibility, yet can play immediately, having sat all last season.

If back to her best, she was not only an acceptable scorer (12 1/2 ppg) but was their best defensive player. She sounds like a 2-guard, which, if Peoples is the Point, is good. She was allegedly by some ratings the 17th best HS player in her class. Maybe she's "Jackie Young."

That would give Muffet a guesswork line-up of Peoples (1), Walker (2), Prohaska (3), Brunelle (4), and Vaughn (5). ... not what we're used to, but should play good BBall.

One would think that the current bench will provide 3-4 other usable players. We could still use another "surprise."

..... and Brunelle and Peoples must be VERY good.

If true, that still leaves two more vacancies on the roster for the 2019-2020 season. We are losing all five starters, so I assume we need five incoming players.

We have Samantha Brunelle and Anaya Peoples coming in as freshmen. Destinee Walker would make three. Two more open spots remaining on the roster. Are we still recruiting high school players for the upcoming season or are we looking to add another grad transfer.

Anyone have any insight into how the remaining openings on the roster might be filled? Or better yet, what does our 2019-2020 roster look like at this time?

We could use another big in the mold of Shepherd or Turner.

All the top 100 players are signed so I doubt we pick up another recruit. Grad transfers would be the only way to go at this point.

Our current roster before the transfer looked like this:
F- Vaugn, Cosgrove, Patterson, Brunelle
G- Gilbert, Peoples, Nixon
Swing- Prohaska

Walker falls into the G category. Nixon and Peoples can play the point with Gilbert, Walker and Prohaksa manning the 2/3. That leaves 4 between each with a swing in Prohaska.

Patterson and Brunelle seem like more finesse players, so finding another big who can post up, rebound, would seem to be what we need at the current moment

I would take fellow UNC transfer Stephanie Watts. She is a big that would fill a need and is very talented.

Thanks for providing the information. If I remember correctly, Brunelle won the three-point shooting competition at the McDonald's All-American event, so I see her more as a replacement for Marina Mabry in the starting line-up. Another player who could post up and rebound sure would be nice.

Although she's not a post player, I was hoping Brunelle's friendship with Paige Buecker could entice her to come to Notre Dame, but she went over to the dark side and committed to UConn.

saw that....anyone know if the 2 years is guaranteed or would she need to apply of a 6th year?

Not sure what you mean by "guaranteed".

Does she already have a 6th year waiver? NO.

You can't apply until after the 5th year of your "5 to play 4" window. She first played in the '15-'16 season so 2019-2020 season would be the last year in her 5 year window. She could play this coming season and then she and ND could apply for a waiver for a 6th medical hardship season to play 4, as I understand the procedure.

She played her freshman and sophomore year and only 4 games last year so she would appear to qualify.

Huge pickup for McGraw and staff. Class of 2020 5 star big Natalija Marshall (6'5") committed to Notre Dame tonight. She ranked as the #2 big and #12 overall by ESPN. If I remember correctly, it came down to Notre Dame and Stanford.

Did ND ever recruit 5* Sydney Parrish from Indy? She committed to Oregon this week.

I played against her dad Shawn when he was at Ball St.

I’m wondering the same. Recruiting sites don’t follow women’s basketball like they do football and men’s hoops, so it’s hard to get inside info. But just from following it, I think they are after bigger fish like Caitlin Clark.

I played against her dad Shawn when he was at Ball St.

Both sides showed some interest, unofficial campus visit (Niele Fest Oct '17), etc but it apparently ended with the verbal commitment of Allie Campbell last September. Parrish no longer mentioned ND. In January Parrish put out a list of 7 finalists, ND was not one of them.

I don't know if it was a case of first one to commit, or if Parrish wanted to get out of Indiana, or didn't care for the rigors of ND student life or Muffet's style of coaching or play, or if the coaching staff didn't see the chemistry they look for.

Parrish's seven finalists, to me evoke a more casual atmosphere than ND's.

Both Parrish and Campbell were guards in HS but could be wings in college.

There are other prospects, ND is recruiting Catlin Clark at PG, like just about everyone else, and Maddy Westbeld, Kat's sister at wing.

Problem in the paint

Problem in the paint

The bigs next year are Vaughn, Cosgrove who seemed to have spent more time shooting threes then in the paint, and incoming freshman Sam.

Hopefully we can find another Jessica Shepard via the transfer portal. Consider that in 2018, our bigs would have been Westbeld and Nelson, along with incoming freshmen Vaughn and Patterson and Vaughn ended up being out for the season. That NC doesn't happen without Shepard's transfer. Let's all hope we get lucky twice.

Notre Dame's Patterson in NCAA transfer portal
11:03 AM CT
Associated Press

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Notre Dame might lose another scholarship player after Danielle Patterson announced her intention to transfer.

Patterson was one of six scholarship players coach Muffet McGraw figured to use in rebuilding her lineup after each member of the starting five from last season was among the first 19 picks of the WNBA draft. Patterson, a 6-foot-3 sophomore forward from New York, announced her intention to enter the NCAA transfer portal on her Twitter account.

"It has been a privilege to wear Notre Dame across my chest, but the time has come for me to say goodbye and move on," Patterson tweeted.

McGraw was out of town and unavailable for comment, but a team spokesman confirmed Patterson had entered the NCAA transfer portal to look at her options, one of which could be to return to Notre Dame. Patterson last week was named the team's most improved player at an awards ceremony that celebrated a 35-4 season that ended with an 82-81 loss to Baylor in the NCAA championship game.

In two seasons, Patterson has averaged 11 minutes, 2.9 points, 1.7 rebounds and 0.2 assists in 66 games. She scored three points in 27 minutes of four NCAA tournament games this season and did not play against Texas A&M and Baylor as the Irish came up short of repeating as national champions.

If Patterson transfers, McGraw would have only two returning players taller than 5-foot-11 -- 6-3 sophomore Mikayla Vaughn and 6-4 freshman Danielle Cosgrove. The Irish have five scholarship players returning in Vaughn, Cosgrove, 5-10 guards Katlyn Gilbert and Abby Prohaska, and 5-8 point guard Jordan Nixon.

Notre Dame has two top recruits arriving in June in 6-2 forward Samantha Brunelle and 5-10 guard Anaya Peoples, while 5-10 guard Destinee Walker of North Carolina has announced that she will be a grad transfer.

Based upon this tweet about 24 hours ago, I don't think returning to Notre Dame is an option.

The Door MAY Still Be Open.

The Door MAY Still Be Open.

https://www.ncaa.org/sites/default/files/di-saac-notification-transfer.pdf

Notification of Transfer: What Division I Student-Athletes Should Know
The transfer process previously known as “permission to contact” has been changed to “notification of transfer.” Student-athletes should be aware of the process and implications. Read below for more information. (New Process Effective Oct. 15, 2018.)

...

Q: Are there any consequences if I give a notification of transfer and
then don’t transfer?

A: NCAA rules do not apply any consequences if a student notifies a school of an impending transfer and then does not transfer. Although, once you have communicated your intention to transfer to your coach and compliance officer, your coach does not have to invite you back on the team and your financial aid or scholarship also may be discontinued for the following term.

Danielle Patterson discusses decision to leave Notre Dame
By Anthony Anderson Tribune Correspondent 19 hrs ago

...

“I thought it would be the best option for me and my development and what I want to do after college, because I want to play professionally,” Patterson said of why she intends to transfer from Notre Dame.

...

During a 15-minute phone conversation Thursday with The Tribune, Patterson acknowledged some degree of frustration over lack of playing time during this past season.

She added that coach Muffet McGraw “graciously” accepted her decision to transfer, and said McGraw even left open the option for Patterson to return after she explores her choices through the transfer portal.

“I appreciate her saying that, but I don’t think I would,” Patterson said of changing her mind. “This is pretty much 100 percent.”

...

Patterson said there are “a lot of different reasons” for her transfer beyond playing time and player development, but did not want to “go into specifics.”

...

Other reasons ... ???

Podcasts???

She wants more PT but is leaving a team where there were only 2 bigs that played in the paint returning???

She wants to play professionally but is leaving a team where all 5 starters were taken high in the draft???

She was not an adequate substitute for either Turner or Shepard. Turner hit .631 of her shots, Shep .594, ... Dani .477. Nor is she the defensive player Bri is nor makes the Fast Break Happen like Shep does.

She played 13 minutes less for the season than Vaughn did. 13 minutes. Vaughn was a shot blocker against opponents first team not just in garbage time.

So whose PT did she want. Nixon? Dani had difficulty handling the ball in the paint. Prohaska's? Abby had almost 200 minutes more PT as a DEFENSIVE GUARD, a ball hawk. Abby got a considerable amount of PT as a guard due to injuries to 3 guards ahead of her, Mabrey, Gilbert, AND Nixon. Also despite her on court shortcomings Abby continued to scrap for the ball. She made a spot for herself on the court.

Abby's scrappiness reminded me of the scene in Rudy were Ara says to his unhappy RB, "If you had Ruediger's heart you'd be an All-American."

Kind of makes me think of Matt Ryan - the whole PT argument makes zero sense. Get the feeling coaches are asking the player to work on areas outside of their comfort zone and just seeing the grass greener on the other side of the fence as an easier excuse than going to work.

strange decision, but I think women transfers are more likely to be for non basketball reasons than men's are. If its a basketball reason I'd guess she wants to be a wing and Muffet told her sorry, we need you in the paint.

Not to change the subject, but on the subject of bigs..... anyone know the status of our outlook on 2021? There’s a 6’5” girl from Buffalo (Williamsville South) named Amari DeBerry who’s number 2 in the country in ESPN rankings. I’ve seen her up close, coached against her in travel ball. She’s the real deal and has great instruction in a very good program. Been a double double machine since 7th grade on varsity and it’d be great to add her. I know the AD at Will South and he has told me when Gino has made his way there...

On Patterson: my uninformed speculations.

Muffet BADLY needs Vaughn on the floor next season. She and Abby are the only two returning players who exhibit the required toughness to play in big games. Patterson did not show that. Her reasons for transferring may also be in that same behavioral category. (Boley couldn't "take it to be able to later give-it-out" and even today on Oregon is one of softest "bigs" in the country.)

Patterson was willing to try to learn Muffet's defenses early, and so played over Vaughn, who didn't. Vaughn finally got at least some of the message and passed her by. Now there is no apparent reason for Vaughn to cede playing time for Patterson.

So, she's literally sitting there knowing that Vaughn and Prohaska are going to start, and neither is a point guard or a two guard, so there's just one "big" position left. ... harummph ... Brunelle. Seats on the starter bus filled.

Patterson probably also knows that Muffet also badly wants Cosgrove to develop. When garbage time was available, in she came, but not only that, but with obvious orders to shoot whether she made them or not. Muffet must be seeing a long range tall bomber in practice. This, by the way, is one of my fantasy dreams for next years' team: Cosgrove becomes a confident 6'4" bomber, while Brunelle gets a rest from doing the same thing, or they are both in together creating a 3-point nightmare for most opponents (who cannot match their height on the perimeter.)

So, Vaughn, Prohaska, some point guard (Peoples), and some back-up point guard (Gilbert/Nixon), the UNC transfer, Brunelle, Cosgrove --- seven players Muffet would want to get big minutes. That's the same number that kept her on the bench this year.

Destinee Walker Transfers to Notre Dame
Will be eligible to play right away for the 2019-20 season

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The University of Notre Dame women's basketball team received a roster boost in the form of fifth-year transfer Destinee Walker. The move from North Carolina to the Notre Dame was made official this past Friday. Walker, a 5'10" guard out of Orlando, will be eligible to compete right away for the 2019-20 season.

Walker was the 17th nationally-ranked recruit out of high school (according to ESPN) where she earned McDonald's All-American and Naismith honors along the way. In addition, she was named the Florida 4A Player of the Year for both her junior and senior years, leading her Lake Highland Prep squad to a state championship in her senior season.

In her first year with the Tar Heels, Walker was named to the ACC All-Freshman Team after averaging 13.9 points, 3.7 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game. She led the team in double-digit scoring games with 28, which included a career high of 32 points. She also ranked sixth in the ACC in free-throw percentage at 81.3 percent.

Walker averaged 12.4 points, 3.7 rebounds and 2.0 assists as a sophomore, registering four 20-plus point performances to her name. A knee injury then took Walker out for the final 10 games of the season, in addition to the entire 2017-18 season - which she redshirted. Walker then saw a limited 39 minutes of action last season.

All-in-all, in 57 career contests at UNC, Walker was a 43.8 percent shooter from two-point range and a career 78.3 percent shooter from the free-throw line. She was twice selected as the team's Defensive Player of the Year.

Walker will join returnees Kaitlin Cole, Mikayla Vaughn, Abby Prohaska, Katlyn Gilbert, Danielle Cosgrove and Jordan Nixon, along with incoming freshmen Samantha Brunelle and Anaya Peoples.

We still need one more (even if there's no chance to get another.)

And, I look at "leadership." We are probably going to "fall in love" with Abby next season even if she averages 2ppg. Maybe I know nothing here (easily possible) but where else will leadership come from? Let's hope that Destinee Walker has a perfect personality. (as well as a lot of game.)
