Good reads. Man, this is shaping up to be a pretty epic competition. Everyone seems to think that it's Hendrix or Golson's to lose, but I will not be the least bit surprised to see Kelly either go with Rees again if one of the other QBs does not step up, or play a mixture of them.

I'll go on record as saying that Tommy is not a good option for us, and I think that Golson is the most intriguing out of the three. Regardless I think it'll be an interesting competition.

I'll second that. The way I look at it, we're a long shot for a BCS game this year regardless of who the QB is. We're losing a lot in the secondary and at WR. I think we'll have good chance to be great next year. So what would you rather have for the following year? Rees going into his senior year with 2 year's starting experience, or Golson/Hendrix/Keil coming off one full year's experience? I'll take the latter. I think one of those three players with one full year's experience has more potential than Rees with a 3rd year's experience.

I would be literally stunned if Rees is the pick. And I think much of our fanbase would, too. Kelly isn't an idiot, he sees the same things we saw last year. The race is Hendrix/Golson, with Kiel being a real dark horse. I don't think Kiel will play this year, but it wouldn't stun me. Rees will never see the field again, and I think Kelly is just trying to be nice by not dropping him from the "competition" at this point.

I'll be surprised if Rees isn't the starter. He will put up great stats against the first couple teams, leading ND to wins, and then when he starts losing to the better teams, Kelly can fall back to the 14-4, or whatever the hell his record is, argument. All big name head coaches have big egos. Nothing would stroke Kelly's ego as much as taking a scrub QB and turning him into a 9-3 QB. I think he's just looking for a way to give Rees the start.

I can't see Kelly sticking with Rees out of ego; the guy's not his recruit. We saw how Kelly unceremoniously yanked Crist last season. I don't see him playing Rees for any reason besides he thinks Tommy is the best man for the job

If Tommy starts then we need to link this thread with the Nick Saban thread because Kelly will be signing his own walking papers IMHO.

No... I think my message was perfectly clear. Thanks though. :)

Oh, my bad. I thought you had a colossal stroke that led to your message. Then I remembered that you were the one with all the Tommy 12-2 messages and all that noise. So carry on. I hope your vision doesn't come true, but I expect it will. It's the worst possible outcome and it's ND football. What else is new?

Rees starting would ruin the season right off the bat. He's just too terrible to be starting at a respectable program.

If Kelly names Rees the starter I will punch a hole in the nearest wall. I don't think I'd be able to sit through another season of his lame duck throws into triple coverage. Yeah, he's a "winner," but it's hard not to win when you have the very good defense and running game he had last year. Basically all he had to do was go out and not lose, and he struggled to do that sometimes. The only time he was not the main reason we lost was against Michigan last year.

Respect the hell out of Rees, but man I don't think I'd be able to watch him start at QB again.

tommy boy always looks good this time of the year wearing the red jersey. If he went 200/200 this spring and summer it would mean turds to me. Golson or Kiel must step up and Hendrix is there just in case or to change the pace. When two of the four transfer and Zaire is wearing a gold helmet we can finally get down to wearing a National Championship. GO IRISH

That would be VERY unbecoming a St. Ignatius Man. What the hell are they teaching you guys over there these days?

After listening to Kelly talk about the offense and QBs, I'm beginning to think we'll see some Florida Gators circa 2006 action this coming season.

With Rees being our Chris Leak and Hendrix being our Tebow? God I hope not.

I think we'll see a lot of different packages if one of them doesn't completely separate this spring. I don't like it either, but it's better than 100% Tommy

For all we know Rees may have progressed really well...

I think with Chuck at OC though we see a lot more running from our QBs and that slowly pushes Rees out of the race.

IMO it Hendrix or Golson. If Golson starts, Hendrix will be used as like a short yardage back that can pound it.

Heres the thing...I've got nothing against Tommy, but he was our best option unfortunately for the last two years. He performed as best he could in the position, and he won some big games for us. He had his mistakes, but statisically he wasn't much different from a young Brady or Jimmy as a Freshman and Sophomore.

Going into his Junior season Tommy would be expected to be much improved as he's started a full season and has experience under his belt...but on flip side we can no longer use the argument that the underclassmen aren't prepared and lack the knowledge of the offensive system. Hendrix has meaningful game time experience now, Golson has had a full year in the system, and Kiel is enrolled early (Although may be expected to redshirt the first year). If Tommy remains the best option when there are gentlemen behind him with clearly superior athletic talent...I'd be disappointed in the staff for not having them up to speed.

This is a tough position to judge at this point. We're going into a season with a rougher schedule, we're losing some offensive weapons in Floyd, Gray, and some linemen. You would normally want an experienced QB to keep things together...and you would have to assume that Tommy's turnovers would be reduced in his Junior season as many QBs hit their stride's by year 3. Despite all this, I kind of want to look to the future here. We want to be well established at QB and on offense by the time our defense matures next year. I don't think anyone is expecting big things from this season, so I would rather make sure someone like Golson or Kiel gets a shot this year to see what he can do so we're not throwing him into the fire for the first time once Tommy is a senior or graduated.

I too think we will run a ton this year. 3 TE sets and wood, GAII, Amir and Theo all coming in with fresh legs and pounding the pulp out of everybody.

I recall Tony Pike saying that his 2nd year was the year when the game slowed down and he got the offense. Tommy already finished his 2nd year. If you read Hendrix's quotes it sounds like he's going through what Pike went through. My Vbucks are on Hendrix.
