Heres the thing...I've got nothing against Tommy, but he was our best option unfortunately for the last two years. He performed as best he could in the position, and he won some big games for us. He had his mistakes, but statisically he wasn't much different from a young Brady or Jimmy as a Freshman and Sophomore.
Going into his Junior season Tommy would be expected to be much improved as he's started a full season and has experience under his belt...but on flip side we can no longer use the argument that the underclassmen aren't prepared and lack the knowledge of the offensive system. Hendrix has meaningful game time experience now, Golson has had a full year in the system, and Kiel is enrolled early (Although may be expected to redshirt the first year). If Tommy remains the best option when there are gentlemen behind him with clearly superior athletic talent...I'd be disappointed in the staff for not having them up to speed.
This is a tough position to judge at this point. We're going into a season with a rougher schedule, we're losing some offensive weapons in Floyd, Gray, and some linemen. You would normally want an experienced QB to keep things together...and you would have to assume that Tommy's turnovers would be reduced in his Junior season as many QBs hit their stride's by year 3. Despite all this, I kind of want to look to the future here. We want to be well established at QB and on offense by the time our defense matures next year. I don't think anyone is expecting big things from this season, so I would rather make sure someone like Golson or Kiel gets a shot this year to see what he can do so we're not throwing him into the fire for the first time once Tommy is a senior or graduated.
