So did the DC search just get another week added on
Yeah, I think Rees has done an admirable job with development. Agreed on Pyne this year and then just take a look at sub 6-foot 3-star Ian Book. The issue isn't development. It's 100% recruiting. Same thing ran cost Denson and Lyte their jobs. How long of a rope does Tommy get? Or is it all moot because he'll be a HC somewhere before it comes time to pay the tab?

Golden supposedly has already interviewed. Freeman just hasn't made up his mind.
Matt House was hired by BK and still coaching the Chiefs. No reason they can't announce it, once Freeman ultimately makes a decision.
It could happen tomorrow or 2 weeks from now.
If he did such a good job why did we get stuck with Coan?

AFAIK, Lyght and Denson were both good coaches who sucked at recruiting (for whatever reason). Lyght officially left for personal reasons and I believe Denson took some lower level HC gig. But in both cases, I believe they were urged to do so so all parties could save face as they were not going to be welcomed back regardless.I thought Lyght got let go because he did a few no-no's as far as recruiting goes. FWIW, Pride and Love swore by Lyght. They both turned out pretty good. Not going to argue on Denson, he did a lot of things right but he had some areas to improve too. He left the RB position in a bit of a mess in 2019, and you have to wonder why some players failed to develop or developed so late like Dexter. How much of that was on the staff, and how much was poor recruiting evaluations?
We've been steadily pulling in 4 stars in recruiting, some high, some low. We've got respectable talent I think, the big problem this year was a lack of anyone with playing time which is what brought Coan. I'm not sure what kind of QBs people are expecting to come to ND in 2022. I don't think we can snow anyone with Super Bowl Rings these days, that's how we got our last two 5 star QBs. 5 star QBs almost always have NFL aspirations, and that means they want to go to a school that will get them there. Oklahoma, Alabama, Georgia, OSU, Clemson, etc. There's only a few elite QBs in a class typically, and more often than not they're probably going to wind up at one of those places. It's a pretty hard sell getting one to come to ND these days when our products have been backup NFL material at best. Even if we can land a 5 star again there's no guarantee they'll pan out. I'd love for us to land another one, but the last one was almost 15 years and 2 coaches ago. I'm sure it'll happen again, but they're going to be few and far between.

Exactly this. I don't understand why people's fandoms are being called into question for stating the obvious like this. We have become a steady 10-win team. In order to take the next step we need to upgrade at QB. Plain and simple.I feel like this whole argument comes down to expectations. If you expect ND to beat up on a weak schedule and lose 1-2 games per year against superior talent then recruiting and QBs are fine.
If you expect a legitimately competitive playoff team (which ND has not had since the early 90s) then you are going to be disappointed in guys like Coan being the starter. Even though he was fine.

Can we just merge all 3 of the "Jackson Arnold," "Tommy Rees - Offensive Coordinator," and " ND Coaching Search Megathread" into a single thread?
Wait til we miss on Johnson after telling him he couldn’t commit all spring

What will we call it "Notre Dame QB and coach vacancies discussion thread "
Btw I'm saying 15% chance Rees doesn't make it to the Horseshoe in September. We got to wait for these NFL head coaching positions to get filled. I'm thinking Rees could take an NFL HC and/or OC position.
You may think Rees is unproven nobody will hire him. You'd probably be right. But Rees is actually pretty well talked about in coaching circles.
I think Rees would prefer the pros where he doesn't have to recruit. He's also a big McVay and Shanahan fan.

Rees to the NFL for anything above QB coach at this point is a laughable topic.
I don't think it would be completely out of the question as OC. Kellen Moore is just four years older than Rees and he's been the OC of the Cowboys for the last 4 seasons. His prior coaching experience was just one year as QB coach, so Rees actually has more experience coaching than he does. Moore had a bit of NFL experience as a player though.
The problem is NFL people watched the entire bowl game, not just the 1st half.
