Mason finally official.
You guys know that feeling you get in that pit of your stomach, that your favorite team is going to hire Al Golden for defensive coordinator? I have that feeling right now.
Well at least Golden is a classy dude and not an a-hole like BVG.

so the biggest issue with Golden is that he prefers to 2 gap up front?
I dont recall if MF's defenses preferred that but I know he preferred 3 down correct?
Seems like something we could move to, especially if Aidan K. is a monster. However, it sure would have been nice to take another DT this class if thats the case.
I’m wondering if he’s seriously debating calling the plays himself.

I think so....
I think one of the ISD guys referenced it, it’s interesting the reaction a defensive coach gets to calling plays when plenty of offensive coaches do it
Curious if Venables will call the defensive plays.

Let's hope not for the sake of his sanity and overall product on Saturdays.
Terrible take imo. Not saying he has to call the plays but it's actually not that big of an issue on gamedays.
It's more that he still has to have a defensive staff he has some faith in to put some of game plan together during the week without him, because he can't neglect day to day head coaching stuff.
What else is he going to do during the games? Give words of encouragement, and make the go or no go 4th and 1 calls??

I would make Rees OC and RB coach (everyone has been saying you can phone in the RB coaching) and bring in a legit QB coach like that Ohio State QB coach on big dollars. That would be great for ND and Rees because Rees' next move is to be a head coach somewhere and while he is at ND he needs someone who can help him bring in 5 star QBs.

What's your deal with Rees? What has he done that's been so awful? It's like you think 5 star QBs just grow on trees. You know in all of Saban's time at Alabama, the best of the best, he's signed four 5 star QBs? Phillip Sims, Blake Barnett, Tua, and Bryce Young. Two of those four didn't pan out, a 50% success rate, which is not uncommon as many five stars don't live up to the hype. There's very few true elite QBs each year, and they're pretty hard to grab. Would I like to bring a bunch of 5 star QBs? Yeah, sure, who wouldn't...but be realistic. Saban has had four in 15 years at Alabama, how many do you think we're bringing in to South Bend with the self imposed restrictions?

To be fair Tua and Bryce Young had the grades for Notre Dame. Bryce Young went to a Catholic high school. Trevor Lawrence was a scholar athlete.
The self imposed restrictions aren't an excuse when it comes to QBs; maybe diva elite WRs but not QBs. Most of these QBs got the grades. The mental makeup of the position requires some intelligence to be elite.
Seems like comparing everything to Alabama is the new Godwin's law. How about recruiting the position well enough where we don't have to take Wisconsin's back-up for a year and then still worry if anyone on the roster can be an effective starter. This is a big year for Tommy. If TB12 comes out and plays well and gets developed, you won't see many complaints about Rees. If he looks inept and QB recruiting continues as it is, then he will be rightfully criticized for it.
5 star Philure transferred, couldn't beat out Book so he didn't pan out. That's why we had to bring in Coan and he played pretty well for a "Wisconsin backup."
