Regarding assistants potentially joining Brian Kelly (247sports.com)

Tom now reporting that he might be alone.

Something isn't adding up. This tells me that Dodd is FOS, because why would each of the assistants stay at ND if they're going to wait for Fickell?

This reads to me that either Freeman is already gone or they are working out the contract. How can you try to keep the OC without knowing who the HC is?

Yes, meaning per Loy which is the most recent update on the topic, no ND assistant coaches are with BK en route to LSU.

This is just a logistics thing though. They can easily hop on a flight if they don't secure what they want with ND in the next 24 hours..

I thought there was a chance Rees stayed loyal to BK, but in the end he still bleeds blue and gold. Kudos to him if he sticks around, he's setup well for a 2022-2023 run with these freshmen. Hopefully Freeman is HC then, we may end up retaining the core.

If this is the case the they must know who the HC is going to be (Freeman). This is at complete odds with what Dodd reported.

Yeah, if you're in wait and see mode you can't expect to hire a coach with an OC in place that they didn't approve of.

I have turned from a Tommy skeptic to believer this season. If he stayed under these circumstances I would be a big fan.

Rees and Freeman stay on as OC and DC and we just replace Kelly with Fickell. If that falls through Freeman gets the nod.

Sampson followed up to say this Rees thing is completely up in the air, I wouldn't put too much into "ND is meeting with him".

He has a ~90% raise on the table, he may just be hearing ND out as a courtesy to his alma matter.

To be clear, Loy said he still expects some assistants to follow BK but just that they weren't on the flight.

The significance of that is, of course we were going to lose some of them, that was probably going to happen regardless. But, this way it sounds like we'll at least get a shot to decide who we want to try and retain. If they were on that plane, very likely we never get that chance. Small victories for the program that BK just set fire too.

But how would they negotiate that with Rees, presumably meeting today? Fickle doesn't know Rees and certainly wouldn't say "yeah keep him around".

God I hope not, but that sounds right. We should get wind of it soon then as the coaches we manage to retain (presumably not Freeman) will be telling recruits that Fickell will be the new HC.

If LSU is offering Rees 400k more than his current contract that's telling. Sounds like he wants to remain in South Bend, hopefully we get something done. We're poised really well offensively for '22 and '23 with these freshmen they've built up this year.

It's tough to tell - he's had the top or one of the top classes in the AAC during his tenure. I don't think any AAC team would ever sign a top 25 class regardless of coach.

I don't think Rees would stick around to be Freeman's #2 but who knows. Would think Fickell would be more likely in that case.
