Well a lot of teams have been playing down to their competition and that’s what we did here for a half. In order to demolish Navy you need to force a few turnovers and we got zero.

Carr can not be a pass first QB. Made some good throws today but also missed a few easy ones. Our second possession he got greedy and tried to thread the needle instead of taking a wide open check down and set the tenor for that 3 and out. Was a horrible time to look like a backup. We are a run first team and should never give up on our run game.

Only a couple of teams look better than us right now. Georgia and Miami. Need to get as many players back for next week. Would take KVA over Bowen. Would take Tae over Brewu. Good to see that Bettis looks more polished than any of our starters and he and burress got nice separation.

Talich and Sneed played pretty good and since we had little passing against us Grey was ok as well. Defensive penetration was not impressive. James and Walton in and Williams bless his soul is out. Carr needs to show up and show out for once in a big game. Scouts should look at that. He needs to come back for another year.
If Carrs not a pass first Qb l, what is he doing first?

“We were limited. We didn’t wanna play Coop (senior tight end Cooper Flanagan) too much. He still wasn’t feeling 100%. Flanney — we knew (sophomore tight end) James (Flanigan), we could get a lot out of him. But we wanted to be smart with how much we played him. Both of those guys are a little bit banged up. So we knew Ian would have more on his plate. I thought he did a really good job.”

He looked good blocking for his limited experience. Hopefully he’s utilized in pass game next week

Some positivity - I actually think our offense is underrated at this point. They could certainly get better at finishing drives, but the only times they have had under 400 yards this year was against Wisco in week 1 (350 yards) and at BYU (380 yards) who are 2 top ~15-20 defenses. While it isn’t always pretty, they are balanced now and should be probably praised a bit more than given credit for.

Now if the defense consistently played like a top 3 unit we’d have a title winner.

This game was a 3 hour tackling drill. 2nd half looked like they were ready to wrap and finish. Good Miami short game prep.

Bettis and Ian at Te got good reps.

UK has made Minchey into a pass 1st, 2nd, and usually 3rd. . .
I think Kentucky runs the ball more than Minchey passes it. Minchey rarely runs either. ND should run the ball first. Use play action and throw in some regular passing but no more of this 49 passes a game. You know when we pass over 40 times in a game we are gonna lose.

Depressing first half. Acceptable second half. I guess the good news is Miami has somehow looked worse than us the last two weeks.

I said it during the game day thread and I'll start with it again. Bettis - Eating my crow big time. More importantly, super proud and impressed with his transformation.

I saw i was getting slammed on his thread (for some reason it's not letting me post to it), that's cool. Glad to be wrong on him. I'm not sure I've ever seen a WR in high school need to and then actually do a complete physical transformation where you need to lose a lot of weight, and become athletic. There's no way anyone could have projected that (why he had almost no good offers). You typically see a HS WR needing to add weight/strength. His HS WR film was as average as it gets. Again, he clearly put in the work, super proud of him, happy to be wrong.

I'll start with him, he looks every bit as good as Gilbert physically, then he clearly plays with significantly more energy, focus, and emotion. This is why it's been coaching malpractice that our WR talent/depth hasn't been utilized. Burress looks the part, graham can physically do things greathouse/faison can't from a speed standpoint, but he's clearly not on the same page with carr/denbrock with his routes, but he's burning defenders. My understanding is they all get next to no practice reps with Carr. I can't confirm it but they are who we needed to get more PT early in the season to have them big game ready by BYU. Obviously the staff did not do that, and it for many other reasons helped cost us the BYU game.

Osborne - Quit wasting end of game snaps on Aneyas and Young. They are NOT your now or future, Osborne has a shot to be part of the future, ensure he's developing. Also, with and Aneyas, get him off kick return, everyone is going to kick to him moving forward as he is just jogging during his return. Terrible

Carr had his 3rd bad game in a row for him ,he's just not seeing the field. On the 3 and out, that was 100% on carr. He has to stop forcing throws on first/second down that aren't open when a wide open check down is there. He was behind on a ton of slants/crossers. A lot of them were still caught, but maybe not against a good D.

Premer - Did anyone see miami/unc? TEs and middle of the field are there all day, that has to be premer if the coaches have any sense. Criminal if he doesn't play a lot vs Miami. Premer and the rbs need to be part of passing game plan a ton vs Miami and moving forward better.

I thought the oline played well other than Knapp - about his 3rd bad game in a row too. Not sure what's going on there.

Defense - It's not Keeley, he shouldn't be getting many reps. I said it last week, dunham is clearly the 3rd best DE and this needs to be a 3 DE rotation.

Hopefully Brewu is ok. Gray is getting pushed around the most, and he started. I have no trust in this staff. Mukam hardly played early, gray started what seems like just because he's huge, but he played with no effort or leverage. THe instance mukam came in, he started making plays. He would be my defensive game ball winner.

Bowen and Ausberry just aren't it. Bowen is playing slow, no instincts, no aggression, no violence, and no lateral ability. Ausberry moves better but just is lost a lot. He finally had his first good tackle of the season vs navy. Hate that it's due to an injury, but KVA playing full time over bowen will make this D better. They aren't getting lined up correctly with bowen in so his "leadership and communication" doesn't matter

Hate that I was right about shuler the last few years, if Tae comes back it needs to be Tae, Talich, Obrien. Shuler is just not good, and the called back TD run shows you his lack of speed/effort.

We've all talked about Ash enough, he's just not it and can not own the Defense moving forward. They were so unprepared AGAIN, and it makes sense how freeman said they are calling plays the players don't know how to execute, looks like that from a fans perspective as well.

Freeman talking about how proud he is of the team winning and stating how he thinks carr was awesome is hopefully some serious ridiculous unfounded coach speak. When your team plays like that and a player plays clearly bad, it comes off so fake to say you thought they were great. At minimum just say you need to watch the film first if you don't want to blast them. It almost seems like Freeman is so frustrated he's not even on the "leave no doubt" pathway anymore, or believing this team can win it all. He just seems relieved or even worse, maybe even content.

I just need the beat to ask for me if I should throw away my leave no doubt shirt if freeman and the team don't believe in that anymore? ha

A true tale of two halves.

Offense began to run the ball in the 2nd half which when a team lines everyone up at the line of scrimmage is the move. It makes it super easy to get a hat on a hat and hit a hole for a huge gain. Especially if you are the team with a size/skill advantage.

Defense figured out their shit. I love Drayk for what he is, and he is great in many situations but I don't think we put him in a spot to succeed against Navy. He was asked to do somethings that are the weakest part of his game. I also think that while as a defense you do have to be very sound in your job and assignment against an option team, you also cannot stop being aggressive and playing on your heels trying to read every microcosm of movement. You need the defense to read one quick key and all act quickly to their assignment with violence.

I also want to remind everyone that winning football games is hard. Wisconsin last week rolled USC while Iowa was busy getting upset by Minnesota who got trounced by Purdue a week prior and OSU defeated IU in a top 5 showdown. This week Wisconsin gets obliterated by Iowa, not even scoring any points; USC defeats Ohio State in dominant fashion; Purdue gets taken to the woodshed by Penn State; and IU squeaks by Minnesota at home in overtime.

Football players have good and bad games. Bettis Jr. looked great today! Don't be surprised if we don't see that show up for a minute. Everyone bitching about Gilbert should also realize that he has more yards in a game this year than anyone at ND in quite some time. Shuler started the season like his hair was on fire; now he's looked a step slower. Even the good ones have their bad plays and bad days and blind squirrels keep finding nuts.

Do we need to continue improving, yes. But occasionally, shit just seems to happen. This season is the most reminiscent of 2007 we've had in quite sometime.

And stop acting like just because we have talent we should just be given the title and the only thing stopping us is our coordinators. Get better. (Play more man and RTDB.) Go win ball games. Fuck Miami.

Does anyone actually think Freeman takes over play calling duties on defense against Miami if i were him I would. I think the way you attack Miami is play guys mostly man with a safety sitting back on Toney’s side. You gotta bring pressure and stunts when needed. Got to make Mensah confused.

Onto Bettis Jr. I’ll eat Crow now if i’m wrong but he’s got 170 yards basically playing 3 drives all season. He’s averaging 17 yards per catch just below Gilbert. I think if they put him in the starting lineup against Miami, and make him a starter going forward, I think he ends up 3rd in receiving yards and right around 500 yards for the season.

O'Malley has heard different things on Brewu, but he believes it's an ACL and he's out for the year.
If hes out for the year I just don’t see how we make a deep run in the playoffs if we end up making it without him. I guess that would almost guarantee he is back next year then.

Gilbert came out w/an injury, right? That's why Bettis went in to begin with. Any word on Gilbert? Like Bettis, maybe even more than Gilbert, but ideally we have both of them.

I'm kind of of the mind that Bowen going down isn't the worst thing. He's a smart and tough football player but he's not as fast as KVA or Faraimo, and if losing the "QB of our defense" leads to a simpler defensive scheme, I can't say I mind it at this point. BUT, without Bowen, we absolutely need KVA back this week.

Losing Brewu for any length of time would suck. He has probably been our consistently best interior DL. And every body counts at that position.

Remember in the second quarter when Faison got rolled up on and came off limping? Definitely saw our passing game flash before my eyes for a minute there.
