It's ironic when people want to keep the tradition of pageantry of CFB, and then saying stuff like wanting to kill the tradition of playing Navy.
What’s amazing is we hear CFB fans wanting the tradition of competitive rivalries like SC v ND, OU v TX, PSU v Pitt, Bama v Aub, Miami v FSU, Clemson v SC, etc. The only fans I’m aware of who believe ND v Navy is on par w/ the aforementioned rivalries, are Navy fans or Irish fans.

No ND fans believe Navy is a rival. It’s a “Make-A-Wish” game.

I was amused to see the exalted Midshipmen called for numerous penalties. And they only called about half of them. Really sick of hearing about how they are somehow different than the rest of us.

This is not a championship caliber team. Now you can argue that much of CFB is watered down with NIL but I have seen absolutely nothing about ND that is impressive this year.
What other teams though look championship caliber? #1 Miami went to 2 OT with a very mediocre Florida State.

I’ll focus on the good since I can’t allow myself to be negative going into the biggest regular season game in 20+ years.

  • Nolan James has gotten much better as the season has gone on. Him and Walton as a 1-2 punch is plenty strong enough for a playoff team IMO. Bonus points that Williams has been relegated seemingly.
  • Defensively, Dunham, Christian Gray, and Talich were all good to great.
  • Bettis, with Mike Brown’s coaching, is developing nicely. Hopefully Mike Brown’s coaching evolves on the rotational front.
  • The 4th down Walton slip screen was a phenomenally designed call by Denbrock. He was fine today other than the head scratching drive #2.
  • ND scored 28 points unanswered and it could have more if they wanted it to be.
ND did this without arguably their two biggest difference makers in Moore and KVA who should be back next week. It’s just gonna take a few moments of individual brilliance from them, Traore, and others to make all the difference next week. They’ve been flat as can be these last few weeks, hopefully they’ve saved the fire for Miami.

- How was the game-day thread?

- Defense: everyone in the F7 not named Jaylen Sneed, pathetic effort. Just getting washed out by Navy consistently. Where would the D be without Luke Talich? Watch Shuler vs Rice and vs Navy, they cannot continue on this way. DL was misaligned a few times. There is no play call or game plan or anything I can harp on with Ash we run the “Freeman D” against Navy every year, but having the D sleepwalk through the 1H is on him, the captains and Freeman. I can give a few of the younger players or transfers some grace, but Young/Bowen not being able to properly play a speed option is pure lack of mental toughness/focus. They should be able to defend that in their sleep. There is something very poor about 2Qs under Ash. Opening scripts I can take, but I have no idea why 90% of the points he gives up are in 2Qs

- Offense: Carr was off a bit in the 1H but not gonna crucify an offense than scored 35 points in like 40 non garbage time snaps. If Gilbert isn’t sleepwalking, a theme, on 2nd and 10 they might score on every drive. Two of the things I said I would implement was more pistol runs and play Burress, but I’ll even take Bettis in the boundary. Well we got both and Bettis in the boundary? Big time. Mylan Graham can’t run routes. Every time he’s slightly out of position from what CJ wants. I actually don’t hate at all playing Premer a ton even in a blocking role, have him earn the snaps with his blocking. Good sign. The lack of run game on the first 2 drives to me was trying to get cute and get CJ going and assuming it wouldn’t matter. They also had a very “put it on tape” vibe running a few bunch sets, RPOs and even a quads look.

1H was putrid on D

1H O, they scored 3x, yes, but it felt, idk, disjointed? Off? The 3 and out was incredible, as in, I couldn't believe the gameplan to that point.

Clearly Denbrock saw Navy was bad v the pass all season and wanted to exploit that, but holy fuck it was a slog to make work. And the 1H wr usage and targets still sucked ass.

Last 2 mins of 1H and 2H was better in every way
I believe the reason the O always feels "meh" despite consistently putting up points is that we are never doing creative shit where it feels like you out-chessed them. Like check this out from NW:

We aren't doing that. We aren't scheming up some trickeration or whatever. Instead, it's lots of vanilla stuff done efficiently and then usually we break one. It feels grab bag, and often there are lots of tight windows on the throws.
