IMO I was most impressed with the improvement from the IOL. I get that Navy's DTs are like 250# but ND Spindler and Co dominated that A gap all game.

I've said it 100x and I'll say it again. ND has had some really good teams lately but they've never been able to depend on inside running. It's usually been off tackle or outside and they'd always run into teams with elite speed that would stymie that and then cover the WRs in man coverage. Today looked like ND has some bad dudes inside on the OL. They need that to work and then get Tyree in a track meet running seams. That'll get em in more zone coverage and Hartman feasts.

NC State will tell us a lot more. Navy doesn't have five-star dudes on their DL like Ohio State.

2022 ND rushing v Navy: 1.9 YPC

2023 ND rushing v Navy: 6.0 YPC

I think the difference in having a good QB was especially evident on the 2nd td to Greathouse.

Hartman scrambling, looks like he might run for a short gain, but also has Estime 2 or 3 yds past the LoS. Any ND QB in the last 10 or so years would have taken either of those options and been fine. Hartman kept his eyes downfield and threw a little across his body to hit a wide open Greathouse for the 19yd td. That was good QB play.

Can we learn anything from the defense this game? Not sure if they played well or not. Seemed like there were a lot of yards given up on 1st down and when Navy did pass, I don't think the secondary looked great.

This is the frustrating part of this game. The offense looked sharp. A few things they need to polish up, but it’s game one. The great thing about football is teams and players can improve as the season progresses.

Defensively? You simply just can’t tell. There’s such a discrepancy of talent and size. Also, that style of play will not be seen again, and Navy was no threat to pass at all. That said, even though they only attempted 7 passes, some of their players were notably open. I remember one play in the 3rd quarter specifically where DJ Brown was torched. Horrible, horrible throw by the QB. Just putrid. Anyone else and that’s a 70 yard TD. Thomas Harper was torched on a 30ish yard pass in the 4th. I believe they also had a similar wide-open (that was an incompletion) in the first quarter. Is it poor defensive coverage or is it Navy’s unconventional scheme? Does their scheme lull the DBs to sleep? You really can’t tell.

You got the win and “got this one out of the way.” That’s the most important thing. Now get back across the pond and prepare for the season.

And Shrader, for the love of God, drill the field goals. That wasn’t too challenging of a kick….

Also, can we keep Collinsworth's replacement in the booth? I thought that guy was fantastic. Pair him up with someone who is only half the wet blanket that is Garrett and we'd have some good game coverage. Someone get word in to NBC/AD.
I want Mike Mayock back. Guy was really good in the booth and is unemployed.

I think it's pretty safe to say that when an offense runs 95% of the time, they're going to catch you sleeping when they do eventually pass.

Our secondary is just fine, it's impossible to judge with one data point versus Navy. Kizer was basically playing corner half the game.

And, as the name suggests, as someone that has had a thick, full beard since I was essentially 16, major props to Navy’s coach and Hartman 🫡.

Oh, I agree. That’s why I edited it to include the “lull you to sleep” part. I remember Nebraska was like that. Running the option and power football 95% of the time and then the three times they did a play action, the receiver was always streaking down the field, wide the f*** open.

We know the talent at CB. Glad to get this one out of the way. I view it as a jamboree type game. Work out the kinks type game.

Would you fight him?
I was in the lockerroom with him multiple times back in the day.
First two times, before he was famous, he was nice and just like everyone else.
The last time, after he was famous, he had his own area & nobody was allowed near him & he was a totally different person.
I call it pre & post chest tattoo McGregor.

Reaper vs. McGregor. The cage match we never knew we needed. Lotta bones to be made. 💰 All in on the Grim Reaper.
I walked around 200 & fought 185. I know guys who are my size who trained in his camp and they just took him down with ease and held him down. Weight does play a significant role once you get to a certain level & skills are evened out.

Postgame thoughts

1.) Obvious one. Sure is nice having Sam. Great grasp of what he wants to do with the ball.

2.) No dig on Logan, but he would be #5 or 6 on the depth chart this year. He was solid, but this year's #3 looks better, tbh.

3.) Great job by Rudolph. O line looked assignment sound.

4.) Whoever designed our run scheme, it is FINALLY what I have been wanting for years. North/South, downhill gap scheme vs. stretch zone scheme. Trapping and north/south. UNDER CENTER! Finally a thing of beauty. This run game will be tough. Very well designed after years of flawed design, IMO.

5.) Did I mention finally under center? Helps your run game and play action game so much. So much of a prettier offense and a marriage between a power run game with a play action passing game. Really, really like the offensive design vs. what it was. That's coming from a big BK/Rees supporter.

6.) Holding Navy to 3 is always exceptional. Good job by Golden and the defensive staff.

7.) Marist actually made some plays.

8.) I wasn't sold on Bothello (sp?) but he looked good.

9.) Parker did a great job and I loved all the design, however, a good offensive line makes every play caller great. A poor O line makes every play caller bad.

10.) Lots of positives. Fun game.
He has a reckless, head hunter style of play, but I thought he was the best LB on the field yesterday.

Stock up: Onye, JJP, Sam Hartman, Deion Colzie, Chris Tyree, all RBs, Jaden Mickey, Gabe Rubio.

Stock same: Greathouse. I said he was a hybrid between Floyd and Tate prior to the game and stand by that, might be our leading WR this year. LBs. Easier to judge DL than LBs against Navy. I think they'll be solid, nothing more, and they were solid today. Not close to great and won't be great this year.

Stock down: Merriweather. Hard for me to be lower on him than I was, but every other WR stepped up to the moment this game. I think we may see Sam Hartman just ignore him when he's out there like he did in the entire 2nd, 3rd, and 4th quarters. Doesn't fight, has soft hands. Open to changing this opinion throughout the year but so far, it's what he is.

Stock Down: Running Estime 4x to run the clock. Stock Down: Tommy Rees.
I'll add to this, JD was getting burried on blocks, and that's from small OL. If anyone rewatches, notice how often he's swallowed up. Not surprising to me but that has to improve one way or another. Against OSU/USC/Will Shipley those turn into TDs.

That’s a reasonable cut to fight weight. Guys suck themselves down, impact their performance and make themselves miserable. I still can’t believe his camp thought it was a good idea to go to the ground with Khabib.

Something else I liked about yesterday was Gino Scungilli on the sideline coaching up the offense. I really feel that will be a big help this season overall.

1. my biggest gripe was the glitching and the view from camera sucked
2. Hartman was just toying with them and having fun out there... he allowed me to relax during the game
3. Thought it was great to see good execution on the offense, Parker called a great game
4. Oline was stout, new guys did great
5. Wr's made plays...colzie was talked about as being so far down the depth chart and he showed up.. honestly was disappointed by tyree, tobias... they pressed too hard...
6. Coaches had their guys ready, energetic and having fun
7. Sam F'ing Hartman.... glad you're here

Anyone try this? I wonder if the quality was better than peacocks? Probably need a VPN to watch it in the states.

Yep I did. Was basically perfect aside from some buffering in the 3rd quarter. Definitely much improved compared to years past. And not having to pay $60 like last year was a very nice surprise.

How tf did that fumble after half get given back to Navy? I've never seen a scrum pile after a fumble be given back to the team that didn't come out with the ball. Total BS by the refs.

Hartman was money with the exception of the Merriweather non-PI, which shouldve arrived much sooner. Night and day.

Defense played great.

If this is the level of product NBC wants to provide, I'm all for it. There were some trouble spots with the camera angles in a soccer stadium, but overall it was a good looking professional product and nearly every second was ND branded. That NIL plug was amazing.

Yeah, I’m not big on him or Kiser. They are what they are, and this stage, I don’t see how they can improve. Physically, it just isn’t there. They concern me greatly against Ohio State, Clemson, USC, NC State, Pitt and Louisville. Hell, Duke too.

Sneed, zero mentions? He's not good enough to play against Navy? I'll have to rewatch and look for him.

Marist looked more confident and in better position, however, I want to see more sticking and less grabbing and pulling. Bertrand needs to wrap as well.

I vote for opening with Navy every year. Get that game out of the way, It is such a one-off compared to essentially every other team in the country
I’ve always thought this. It’s not a lot to ask of Navy either considering ND is obligated to schedule 5 ACC opponents + SC every season. How many OOC P5 teams do the academies play each year in Oct/Nov? I can only recall ND and there’s a reason for that.
