On a couple of those “missed tackles” it seemed pretty evident they were trying to stand the ball carriers up and rip at the ball. My assumption is that was a point of emphasis in this game by the coaching staff.

Game takeaways:

1. Sam Hartman is an alpha dog
2. We have 4 WRs/RBs who can play

4. Marist I owe you an apology. JD & Kiser more of the same.
5. Freshman standouts: Greathouse, Love

JD and Kiser are fine players that will always have a place, but I think MF will slow production on that ND LB captain assembly line of Joe Schmidt, Drew White, JD, etc, and go big game hunting. He’s already started.

(LB needs a Teo type bell cow. It’s really that easy. Just recruit a generational talent, beat out 100+ other programs for his services, and then get a Heisman year out of him lol)

Agreed JD & Kiser are fine until you play faster competition. Marist looking like lightbulb may have gone off.
KVA may be the next great ND poly linebacker.

Tyree should have made the move in 22?

The Navy field goal reminds me of a game I saw in Knoxville back in the 90s. Gators were man handling the Vols and it was late in the game. Vols were down by at least 30 (maybe more, my memory aint what it used to be). What was left of the Vol fans started booing loudly when UT lined up for a late field goal. The kicker shanked it and the Vol fans cheered loudly. I laugh every time I think about that. Vol Fans are hilarious.

FWIW, in Rees’s first ever game as OC, which was the 2019 Camping World Bowl beat down of ISU, he put Ian Book under center.

And he did that with Book, with somewhat regularity thereafter.

Hartman under center and in Rees’s pro spread offense was the plan from Rees all along. Partly why Hartman came here.
Hey, don't let facts get in the way of the armchair QBs' narrative!

So many positives from the game I’ll touch on later when I have more time but some negatives I saw after watching game twice

Henderson and dj brown played a lot and didn’t do much, pretty much missed on all their opportunities to make a play. Watts was late early but then played much better

Jd was a hair late most of the game

I don’t see it from junior, I think and hope Burnham gets more of his reps. He seems better

Nana is solid but baptiste seems better, seems obvious

Coogan to me was the most inconsistent olinemen but supposedly won battle due to consistency

Tobias drop, he played a lot but needs to get going next week

Evans was only ok for how much he played. I thought staes blocked better actually

Wtf was the end of game offensive calls from Parker

Amazing how many times our corners still got surprised on somewhat obvious passing plays
Leave it to you to watch the game twice and come here w your negatives first. A game the good guys won 42-3. You are one of three posters on this board that would do that. Nice job keep it up.

They were trying to tackle the football and get a turnover, it’s a fine balance
It’s not a fine balance. If you’re there first, you wrap. The second guy can go for the ball.

We all know how good Hartman was. His ability to get us into the right protections and plays then execute was masterful, I can’t remember the last time a qb had that control at nd.

The oline was awesome and completely smothered the navy dline.

Thomas and greathouse were fantastic. Tobias was open a lot in the game, he has to make something happen with opportunities this week

Staes I thought blocked the best out of our tes

Estime was estime, almost all amazing and so powerful with great hands/feet, but he fumbled

Love has “it”, price is explosive but has to run harder when there’s not much there. Payne looked like a solid power 5 running back, didn’t see anything special or concerning

Dline dominated and clogged the entire middle making navy go outside a ton then it was on the lbs and safeties to make the plays. The lbs were late and slow a lot especially jd, but Marist and Kiser made plays. For non starters I thought 2nd team dline really flashed other than junior. Hope baptiste gets first team reps and burnham gets second team behind botelho. Botelho made two plays that junior was just not athletic enough to make the same ones.

Marist and Kiser played well , jd so so. Sneed flew around but lost his person some and really didn’t make anything happen.

Watts had a slow start but then ended up flying around making plays. I thought he was the only safety that played good. Henderson looked lost, and brown just doesn’t make plays but seems to be in the spot to do it.

Corners helped in run support well but bit when they shouldn’t have a few times on obvious pass plays.

Hopefully we can make some fourth quarter fgs next week when up 40 to build condos e into nc state.

Payne isn’t fast enough for kick returner, need someone better back there to compliment ford.

Kudos to staff for a great plan and having the players ready. Part of the plan is for this week, let’s hope they come out blazing Saturday. There wasn’t a ton of plays vs navy.

The defense was very good. Just my opinion but I thought Navy’s offense had way more gimmicks and misdirection stuff than last year. So great job by the defense.

Freeman from ISD said Navy only had 3 runs of 10 yards and the longest was 14 yards. I will take that everytime.

I feel like at least two of those were on their first possession. Then we adjusted. Front seven played great. It’s just hard to know how much to take from a Navy game when you’re talking about the defense.

Holding pretty much any Navy team to under 170 total yards in a game resulting in 3 points scored is a pretty sweet job by ND. IIRC Navy only had around 120 yards on the ground which is crazy.

Well I've watched the game 3 times and we don't play again until Saturday. What the hell am I supposed to do now?
I guess take out all your energy on your wife? I’m still trying to find a solution for this pent up aggression. Saturday did not go as usual.

Postgame Thoughts:
1) Sam Hartman has a great personality, it seems like he has been here longer than January
2) ND could have a 4-5 headed monster at RB
3) Navy couldn't stop Botelho & JJB, if they can be like this all year watch out
4) Has a freshman WR ever had 2 TD's in their debut being the very first game of the year? I picked Greathouse up tonight in my college football fantasy draft
5) When this offense is clicking I think they can be hard to stop
6) I was pleased with the WR play
7) Didn't like the Estime fumble- he rebounded nicely. I hope ND doesn't use Tobias just as a deep threat, patience will pay off for him
8) Always a great, respectable rivalry between ND & Navy

Go Irish!!

Takeaways -

Positives:
1) Sam Hartman was in control from the jump.
2) ND's RB corp is DEEP and it is very talented. Estime is also a top 5 back in the country. If Price isn't 100%, could've fooled me.
3) The OL was very consistent and impressive, and I think the interior guys slightly outplayed the tackles, which is surprising. They all did great. Coogan and Spindler had a very good first start.
4) Jaden Greathouse is a dude. Also, Colzie showing up was really good to see.
5) Impressive in-line blocking from Staes and Evans.
6) The DL was imposing. Rubio and Onye were especially disruptive. Jordan Botelho is a dude. And Burnham looks good as a rotational end
7) Nice of Marist Liufau to join us. Best game I've seen from him since before his injury.

Negatives:
1) Brown was pretty underwhelming. Missed some tackles, especially a key one in open space. That's something I expect him to do well.
2) While I don't think it was a bad game, Bertrand's lack of lateral speed is concerning. He got beat a few times to the edge.
3) Schrader whiffing the 1 field goal wasn't great. His KO's however were excellent.
4) Wished they got Merriweather more involved. He was out there, but they didn't target him much at all.

My only nit pick on Hartman's performance was that there were a few balls that I felt didn't have great location and might not be completions against better competition. Off the top of my head: 1) Colzie reception in the red zone that he had to fall down to catch, 2) Merriweather non-PI that was thrown late (not ball location admittedly so maybe shouldn't be on this list), 3) Greathouse's first TD was underthrown and required him to fight back through the DB and would've been easier if thrown out further, 4) Estime having to make that crazy catch over the middle, 5) the behind LOS throw to Payne that lost yardage could've been a good play if Payne didn't have to stop his momentum to catch it behind him.

Again this is just my nit picking of a great performance. The good news is that Sam did a great job of recognizing where the ball was supposed to go and had the balls to MAKE THE THROW even if it wasnt wide open. Even better is that the WRs rewarded that courage by catching those balls.

Re: the Greathouse TD. He threw it with a defender going low on him. Would've been a penalty in the NFL. Lucky he wasn't hurt on it.

I remember watching our team the last 4 years being stressed out. Having Hartman at QB lowers my blood pressure. The guy can make plays and he is really good at scrambling and checking all his options. As long as the OL can dominate and provide protection we will be in every game this year especially with the RB's we have. There's no need to overwork Estime get him 12-15 carries then let Payne, Love, and Jadarian go to work. I would like to see us get some of those jet sweeps going with Price and Love I think those plays could work well. Parker is most likely keep some stuff hidden until Ohio State, at least I would. I was impressed with the defense and how well we swarmed the ball. I'm surprised a guy like Tyson Ford didn't get on the field? Anyone know what the deal is with that? I mean I'm sure all these guys will play this weeked, Let the starters play for 1.5-2 quarters then get your young guys reps.

When's the last time ND didn't give up a sack? 1st game of the season no less. Very impressive.
