Meyer was allowed to sign whoever the hell he wanted at Florida, even took a known gangbanger in Hernandez and got him enrolled.

This kid smokes a little weed and the higher ups at UF won't let him in.

Just goes to show you that being a rock star coach has it's privileges. McElwain is a decent coach, but he sure as hell ain't Urbie.

Not disagreeing with you, due diligence is probably at an all-time high and they want to be careful, but McElwain ain't Meyer. If Urbie was there and put his foot down, they'd let that kid in IMO.

You missed the point. I'd probably like it if ND had gone with Nike and gotten the Jordan treatment... the point was more along the lines of the fact that Harbaugh somehow convinced 4 WR's to sign with scUM, even though they've got two guys ahead of them that played as freshmen, and even though TE's and fullbacks are gonna be eating into most of the reps that a third and fourth WR would get.

Two of those kids made poor choices based simply on joining a crowded position in a recruiting class for a system that doesn't support that much saturation at the position.

If we got another rush DE, or a corner back, or a WR, I'd give it an B+.

If we got 2 of the above, I'd give it an A-.

If we added another rush DE, WR, and corner, I'd give it an A and I don't think you can argue it wouldn't have been an A.

What is grey shirting? | Athletic Scholarships

Grey shirting is a recruiting term that is not as commonly used as the term redshirting. A grey shirt is an incoming college freshman who postpones his enrollment in classes until the second term of his freshman year. This means they don’t take classes until the winter term. The NCAA allows college athletes five years to complete four years of eligibility after initial enrollment.

When a grayshirt puts off his enrollment, he’s extending his eligibility past his senior year for another term. Grayshirting is most commonly used in football. By delaying enrollment until the winter after his senior year of high school, a football player can play the fall season one year after his graduation date.

However, in redshirting, an athlete is enrolled in classes and practicing with the team, but not competing in games. By postponing their participation in games, they extend their eligibility into a fifth year of school. They are allowed to practice and train, but don’t compete in games so they don’t lose a year of eligibility. Redshirting is also used when an athlete gets injured and won’t be back for the season.

What are the differences between redshirting, grayshirting, blueshirting and greenshirting in college football?

A grayshirt is when a team offers a player enrollment on scholarship at the start of the second semester, after the upcoming season. The athlete then has five years to play four seasons, with the ability to redshirt at some point.

The blueshirt rule allows schools to put "unrecruited" athletes on scholarship once they arrive on campus, but count them against the next year's scholarship total, as long as they don't play. Here's what it means to be "recruited," according to the NCAA:

-- Was provided an official visit to the campus;
-- Had arranged, in-person, off-campus contact with a coach; or
-- Was sent an NLI or other written scholarship offer.

Coaches can contact players and have them on campus for unofficial visits — when the recruits pay their ways — without technically recruiting them. Essentially, as long as a recruit doesn't take an official visit or host one of that school's coaches, he wasn't "recruited" by that school.

For a blueshirt --
When a player has not met any of "recruited" criteria above, then they can basically walkon in the fall, and be given a scholarship if one is available. But they count against the next year's class numbers. This especially works well for in-state recruits, who can visit unofficially.

Twenty-six. USC can take twenty-five total, and there has been some talk that McKenzie will blueshirt. USC should have a scholarship for him in the fall, as they should fall below eighty-five.

A top 20 class after a 4-8 season is all that could be expected minus one thing: at least a single CB should be in this class. 2019 will be a b!tch if we don't add 3-4 next year, preferably top 25 players.

Not saying BK will allow that, but given our depth/talent at TE (Provided Alize remains on the right side of the GPA) would it make sense to keep just 2 WRs on the field more often? I think it would allow us to flex our muscle a bit more and commit to the run game.

I like the sound of utilizing the TE more, even if to run block. I worry about any academic failings when it comes to any player, not to mention injury, but especially the WR and CB position. As an aside, the Irish really closed on this close really well!

Slightly drunk, but really happy with this class. #11 ranked and we went 4-8 with a head coach everyone knows won't be here past 2017. This class should be ranked like #34. ND really does sell itself.

I hope so. Wimbush is probably more of a threat to run than Kizer, Adams should be a much better back with the experience, the O-line has no where else to go but up from last year, and St. Brown and Sanders on the wings with Alize/Smythe in the middle or outlets as threats.

88th in Rushing rank needs to be cut in half in rank- at least.

In 2015, Irish finished the year 27th in team rushing. They need that in 2017.

Not only did the new staff hold the class together - they actually moved up on NSD from #13 going in, to finish at #11 with the 3 new commits. After bottoming out with 15 commits, they got 6 new commits in 6 days, 5 of them flips.

Lots of the criticism recently is deserved but this new staff have established positive momentum and has given everyone reason to be optimistic. 2018 recruiting should be fun to follow.

Sheffield signs with FSU at the last second (VIDEOS)

NICEVILLE - Deonte Sheffield never lost faith in Jimbo Fisher.

Niceville's 5-foot-10, 200-pound running back drew rave reviews from the Florida State University coaching staff after a camp in Tallahassee over the summer, leading to believe the call - and scholarship offer - from FSU's head coach would come.

The end of summer passed. No call.

The end of fall passed. No call.

The season passed and a new calendar year began. No call.

On Wednesday - National Signing Day as it's known around the country - Fisher finally called.

Sheffield and his dad, Donnie, slipped on FSU caps in front of a standing-room-only Niceville auditorium and Sheffield committed to the Seminoles. Soon after he was given his national letter of intent and signed on the dotted line, turning down offers from Georgia Southern, UConn and Southern Mississippi.

Donnie went to work Wednesday unsure his son's dream would materialize. But then he was called home before the signing, walked to the front door and saw his family jumping up and down.


"I knew how bad he wanted this," Donnie said. "When he told me ... oh, man, I better stop because I'm going to start crying again. Florida State, it's an amazing opportunity. But to see my son's faith grow like it did, to see him become a man and grow up as a person through this whole process, that's almost the bigger deal."

Sheffield is ranked as the 65th RB and is the fourth RB in their class. The others - Cam Akers (#1 RB), Kalan Laborn (#4), Zaquandre White (#10)
