Good story about a Florida '16 signee

JOSEPH PUTU READY TO PUT
DOWN ROOTS WITH FLORIDA GATORS

You’ll have to excuse Joseph Putu if he doesn’t have the knowledge of the Florida Gators like some signees do. Or even if he doesn’t know much about the game of football in general. Until Putu was seven years old the word football didn’t even involve helmets or shoulder pads.

Putu was born in the Ivory Coast, a West African country home to more than 20 million. He, like most in the country, grew up playing football, or soccer as you probably know it. Putu played goalie, and got a good laugh when I asked him if that meant he was good with his hands, a trait that would have translated to playing football. My ignorance in the question wasn’t foreign to him.

When he was eight years old his mother and father decided to move to America, Silver Springs Maryland, to be exact. The opportunity for their children to pursue a great education drew them and Putu remembers being excited, even about the little things.

Joseph played h.s. football in Rhode Island, then went to North Dakota State College of Science (in Fargo) where he is finishing his final three courses for his degree there. He signed with Florida without having visited. He wll major in sports management at U.F.

Andrew Ivins was with BGI, right? Looks like he left for 247 Miami site

Makes sense. He's a FAU or FIU grad and I'm pretty sure he worked for one of the Hurricane sites before along with one of the Miami area papers.

I remember catching a glimpse of it on Google and looked into it a bit further. I was thinking between him and Loy, we got a lot of undercover criminals & convicts in our midst.

*** Found the link I saw that details it:

Andrew Ivins has left BGI to cover Miami back in his native Florida. Always liked his work covering recruiting. BGI hired two new dudes, one guy who covered Marshall and Northwestern and another who covered Auburn

Sort of an interesting illustration... no coincidence that all of the top 10 except Oklahoma and Stanford is represented here. What's most interesting to me is how terrible Miami, Texas, and Texas A&M have been the past few years despite loads of "talent"... same can be said for USC, though less extreme.

SBNation's Bud Elliot just published his annual article on the "Blue Chip Ratio":

In 2014, I wrote about how signing more four- and five-star recruits than two- and three-star recruits in the previous four recruiting classes has been a prerequisite to winning the national title over the last decade-plus. I called this the Blue-Chip Ratio.

In 2015, I discussed whether the College Football Playoff could increase the chance of a team falling short of the standard and still winning a title, concluding it probably makes it tougher, since chances are the non-super recruiter would have to defeat two awesome rosters consecutively.

As my colleague Bill Connelly has said, winning in college football takes talent acquisition, development and deployment. I agree. But Gene Chizik has a national title, while Mark Dantonio and Gary Patterson do not; acquisition is by far the most important element. By NCAA rule, coaches get just 20 hours per week with their players. Only so much development can be done.

And yet, despite 80 percent of FBS teams having nearly zero shot to win the National Championship, the sport is still wildly popular.

So how’s the Ratio look for 2016?

(It’s worth it to add a disclaimer. This metric is quite useful for determining which teams have signed elite talent. It is not the most useful for differentiating between bad and below average teams, or below average and average; some teams simply do not have much of a shot of signing elite prospects and instead try to find diamonds in the rough. That’s a strategy that can produce wins, though perhaps not rings.)

The national champion will almost certainly be from this group:

The 13 teams to reach the blue-chip threshold this year are Alabama, USC, Ohio State, LSU, Notre Dame, Florida State, Michigan, Auburn, UCLA, Texas A&M, Georgia, Clemson, and Texas.

ND comes in 5th.

Kind of sucks that my family's teams, UCLA and Notre Dame are the two of the few teams I see as having no real shot on that list... (you can add A&M on there real quick, before UCLA or ND at that and other obvious ones like Texas).

I'm optimistic this year so I think ND has a shot.

Teams with no shot this year IMO: Both Texas teams, UCLA, Auburn and Georgia (not this year, but next year the will be dirty).

Honestly look at ND outside of shamrock colored glasses. If you were a top flight defensive recruit would you want yo come play for bVG and this horrific defense. Year in and year out with him we suck. Some of the worst defense in the history of ND come under him. Oh well, bk loves him. And thinks is "quite good at his job" as he said Sunday. Just sad

Agree. We get top Oline throughout the country and look at the job HH does. I don't see many top defensive players wanting to come here unless they truly value education. Still hoping, through my shamrock colored glasses, that the young guys flourish with the system and we finish 11-1 or 10-2 and defensive recruits will want to come here.

Yes, I would want to come to ND. I'd have an experienced, former consensus All American, All Pro & Super Bowl Champion NFL DB to teach me the game, a quicker path to the field than any of the other Top Ten talent teams, I'd be on tv for the world to see and I'd play against a very good schedule. It's a no brainer.

Look around at the league and see who are the starting CB's. It's not all 5 stars from Bama, FSU and OSU. It's about playing time and development. Look at the Pro Bowl / All Pro CB's from '15: Illinois, Shippensburg, Florida, Coastal Carolina, LSU, Stanford, Washington & two guys from Kansas.

What does playing for a great defense have to do with what matters most to these guys, being an NFL star?

I'm beginning to think he might be part of the problem. I've got got zero to back that up, but we e got some great athletes with below average production from the day he walked on campus. He was a phenomenal player but I'm not sold on his coaching just yet.

Forget what may or may not be true regarding his coaching ability and look at the sales side of the equation. Todd Lyght comes into you living room and pitches you on being a DB under him at ND. Average white guy who was a back up at Lesser U. in his playing days sits down on same coach and tells you whey you should go to his school now where they have six 4 & 5 star CB's in front of you.

It's an easy sell for me. Recruiting is all features & benefits

What great athletes on the backend does Notre Dame have?

Max Redfield? He has underachieved before Lyght got here.

Cole Luke...he played well last year. And didn't play bad against Texas. He got beat once, but that happens to every corner.

I think Crawford is an elite athlete. Luke is a very good corner. I mentioned earlier that I'd like to see a guy like Tony Pride get a shot at safety. He at least has the speed to run with receivers and help over the top. Maybe Claypool -- his defensive film was better than on the other side of the ball. Max Redfield is a good example though. He was underperforming prior to Lyght but was the same at the end of the season as he was at the start. He missed assignments often. That sounds like a kid who was not coached up.

I agree with this and think Lyght will do a very good job. But while my position coach may be good, I still have to play in a defense that appears to be too difficult to learn and has been subpar since BVG arrived. I don't follow the NFL at all but how many DBs get drafted when their team gives up 400-500 yards a game?

Some of the 13 players not ranked came out of high school before the recruiting sites were started. Example Thomas Davis, who would ha even a 5*, and Tom Brady who would have been a 4 or 5 *

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Davis was seen as a top-notch athlete, but lacked ideal size for the LB position and played at a very small school. In fact, Georgia was the only D1 school that offered him.

Brady would have been 3* at best he wasn't very highly recruited iirc
