I was reading an oral history of the making of "Predator" for the 30th anniversary. Good stuff. I'll find the link and post it. Interesting high lights:

-Arnold leaving to get married and missing the honeymoon to finish filming. Maria Shriver not pleased.
-Sonny Landham needing a bodyguard to keep him out of bar fights
-There being half-a-dozen different stories as to why Jean-Claude Van Damme wound up not being the Predator

"RocknRolla" by Guy Ritchie. Fun, but not particularly compelling. Great cast that was doing some grade A scenery chewing.

I did see IT... the kid from Stranger Things carried it... overall it did a greater service to the source material than the mini series did but overall I was just eh over it.

"Johnny Handsome." It's like one of those pulpy B movies from the forties or fifties. Bad guy with a good heart who can't make it in the straight world. Just okay. Ellen Barkin is a stand out, though. She does wickedly unrepentant white trash like no one else and looks damn good doing it.

Blade Runner: 2049 is a masterpiece. As someone who absolutely adores the original I was blown away by how satisfied I was with this sequel. It builds on the original in so many perfect subtle ways. Nothing feels forced or put in just for nostalgia. The visuals are breathtaking. Every shot could be printed out and hung on your wall. Soundtrack was perfect and eerie. Performances were great across the board. Harrison Ford gave the most effort he's given since I can't even remember when. Just fucking spot on. I can't wait to see it again. I think general audiences might find it slow. If you don't like the original you probably won't love this film, however 2049 did cover some of the criticisms of the first one. If you love Blade Runner you're in for a treat.

Denis Villeneuve has earned my unquestioning loyalty at this point. I will go see every movie he produces. Sicario, Arrival, and now Blade Runner 2049 have all been home runs.

Love the original and I'm hyped to go see this. I may even try to sneak out this evening after the kids are in bed. Thanks for the review.

Took the kids to see the Lego Ninjago movie. Not as good as the Lego movie or Lego Batman but my kids still loved it.

Saw IT a couple of weeks ago and thought it was great. Soooo much better than that shitty one from 1990. It did have some good humor in it along with some very creepy shit.

I'm planning to see "Blade Runner: 2049." I'm cautiously optimistic. I'm really pumped to see "The Foreigner." It looks absolutely kick-ass. Considering it's directed by Martin Campbell, who directed 2 of the best Bond movies in the 007 series, I'm pretty pumped.

Saw "Kingsman: The Golden Circle" last week.

I really liked the first one, as it was a true, goofy spy movie with a modern/millennial twist in terms of the characters.

The follow-up wasn't as good, as it was a slight departure from the direction/atmosphere/feel of the first one, but I still liked it. It was a dumb movie, but in a good way. It still had the goofy spy stuff, but it went a LOT over-the-top in how it portrayed the American version of the secret spy agency, and also established a very strange and brutal super villain.

Channing Tatum (Agent Tequila) was okay, but his role was limited, and Oberyn Martell (Pedro Pascal) played an American Cowboy named Agent Whiskey, and he was okay too. Taron Egerton (Eggsy) continues to be a surprisingly good actor and carries the film IMO (as he should, being the lead), Colin Firth was once again awesome as Harry Hart, Mark Strong is awesome as the tech support guy, Halle Berry is still hot, and Julianne Moore plays a surprisingly unsettling super villain.

They set the American spy agency (Statesman) in Kentucky... but they played an ode to West Virginia while showing the establishing shot of Kentucky (Take Me Home, Country Roads), and they portrayed all of the characters as if they were cowboys from Texas. The writers made "Goofy American Badass Spies" a mixture of every country/hillbilly/redneck stereotype they could, and then making them good fighters/shooters with cool gadgets.

The action was great for the most part, the story line had some unexpected but pleasant departures for the characters that showed some surprising character development, and the soundtrack was pretty great.

Bonus points for letting Elton John portray himself as comedic relief, in pretty heavy doses no less, without it being terrible.

It's an even 50% on Rotten Tomatoes, which I understand completely. I liked the first one a lot, and the follow-up wasn't as good, but I wasn't disappointed either.

Their critics consensus is pretty fair:
Kingsman: The Golden Circle offers more of everything that made its predecessor so much fun, but lacks the original's wild creative spark."

TL;DR

They sacrificed some of the atmosphere and creativity from the first film to in order to develop returning characters and introduce new ones.

Wasn't as good as the first, but I would totally watch it again and be entertained.

Saw "Mother!". Good acting performances, but story left a lot to be desired. I'm a big fan of Bardem and he was his typical self. Pfeiffer was probably the best out of the entire cast. Lawrence and Harris pretty good too.

The story...... Aronofsky IMO gets too artsy. Definitely drives uncomfortable feelings, but his message was lost on me. I read all the explanations and reviews, but pretty meh...

Loved Requiem for a Dream and The Wrestler, but Mother! seemed like a poor effort relying too much on shock and started to feel like liberal messaging. I won't spoil for folks that haven't seen it by going into the symbolism, but even that didn't wow me.

Yes, I can't wait for that movie.

Then again, I was really pumped to see "American Assassin" based on the teasers, but it was almost universally disliked by critics.

I watched "Lucky Number Slevin" for the first time. It was tonally weird. It went from brutal to comedic & quirky and back to dark & brutal. It went from being a too cute Tarantino knock-off to swinging hard to being a forced "The Usual Suspects" knock-off.

Finally got around to seeing Spider-Man Homecoming. I liked it. Definitely some changes to the characters from the early 2000 Spider-Man's that I could see some people not liking (like my girlfriend) but I enjoyed it. Just the right amount of Tony Stark/Ironman to make it not feel like an Ironman and Spider-man movie. Also focuses on Peter Parker quite a bit more than Spider-Man which I liked. And then there's my favorite part, Michael Keaton as The Vulture. That dude's great.

Also saw Wind River a couple weeks ago. My favorite movie I've seen this year. Go check it out if you can. Jeremy Renner as what seems to be something like a DNR officer on an Indian Reserve in Wyoming who helps the Native Police and the FBI on a murder case. VERY good movie and wrote by the same guy as Sicario and Hell Or High Water, both of which I liked also.

Yes I agree all three of those movies are phenomenal. Wind Rover is one of the best movies I've seen this year too. Walking out of the theater I had a sick feeling in my stomach. Absolutely brutal movie.

Agreed. Sheridan does a great job of conveying the realism/grittiness in his films without overdoing it. Felt that way with Sicario especially. Not sure how I'd rank them but I love all three. Can't wait to see what he comes up with next.

Edit: Just looked up his upcoming films and it looks like a sequal to Sicario is coming out next year. Consider me pumped haha.

I really liked this movie. The point where everything starts to blow up is a total paradigm shift.

I believe this movie was supposed to be a nod to "North by Northwest".
