But he does to Cincy and it would be a promo... But he also can hang at ND knowing Golden is likely to leave in the not too distant future for another opportunity (NFL?)
Great point and I think ND hiring Denbrock makes promoting Mickens to DC a more reasonable proposition. Would be difficult to have inexperienced coordinators on offense and defense. Mickens as a possible DC and likely Freeman being more involved defensively feels better with offense being ran by a coach with Denbrock's ability and experience.

ND has a great record of recent progressing DC to a good HC job somewhere so he should hang around.

That's where I'm at. If I'm Mickens I don't take a questionable position at Cincinnati now that Fickel is gone. You have to consider too that Cinci is now playing a bit better competition with the move to the Big 12, even with OU and Texas leaving. They won just 3 games this year, and two of the three teams were out of conference. Mickens is far better off biding his time and hoping to take Al's job. It'll pay better, there's better chance for success, and as a result he has a better chance for a good HC job if he wants one. If it's UC now or ND in a year or two, take the sure bet. Don't take a gamble on your career.

Yeah, Mickens needs to stay away from UC until Satterfield is gone. Disaster of a hire.

I'm certainly not sold on Satterfield, but I think it was a hard year to come into a new program that was moving up in conferences. Satterfield did real well at Appy State. He turned Louisville back to a respectable team after the 2-10 Pettrino/VanGorder debacle of 2018 (Part of which was a result of poor recruiting that led to them starting almost an entire defense of Sophomores if I remember). Half of Cinci's losses this year were 1 score games, the blowouts came against the better Big 12 teams. All but like...2 of their starters on offense last year were transfers coming into a new system, right? Half the defense too.

Year 2 will be much better I think. Not saying Satterfield will end up being a home run, but I could see them being bowl eligible next season after the 3-9 start. 7, maybe 8 wins will probably be the average season for Cinci going forward in the Big 12 though.

It's still very much early into crazy season, but I don't see Golden going anywhere this offseason.

There's a good number of openings, but most of them are either not really desirable locations for Golden or are expected to land HC's who don't really have any ties to Golden.

I'd be shocked if Harbaugh doesn't end up in LA, and he's all but certainly taking Minter with him.

I'm not touching the Panthers, Commanders or Raiders openings with a ten-foot pole if I'm Golden. Those franchises are cesspools right now.

One potential thing to look at might be if Brian Callahan gets the HC job with the Falcons or Titans, since he worked with him when he was with the Bengals. But I think there's plenty more viable candidates than Callahan.

I would be shocked if Golden decided to leave, we aren't losing any of our big names on defense and we are adding with the 2024 class.

Could the 2024 defense be better than last year's?

I'm not even referring to Bertrand's ability to make tackles. He's been the quarterback of the defense and a two time captain. I'm guessing his absence will be felt.
I remember reading that Brown kept people lined up in the secondary and that was one of his more critical skills

I think it may have been Irish Illustrated, but I definitely recall someone talking about how Bertrand was a guy who was more locked into his own role and responsibilities whereas Kiser went out of his way more to be a teacher.

Brice said on II podcast this week that ND fought off USC to retain Mickens. Was this previously reported?

For DC or a DB coach? If the latter, it seems like a no-brainer that we should match whatever money they'd offer and there wouldn't seem to be any other reason he would go there.

It makes me wonder. Was Kelly SO disliked that they wouldn’t give him what was needed?

Nah, I think it just took time for the admin to come around to the realities of modern CFB. After all, they did make Freeman one of the highest paid DCs in the country

Agree, I think the school not being prepared for Kelly leaving forced them to either step forward or back. Glad they are taking a step forward

Good for Mickens. He deserves the recognition. He's going to climb in the profession. There's no question.

I like Torrian Gray. Seems a bit low.

Shout out to my guy DJ at #30.
