Hinish was getting pushed around last season but did shine on passing plays where he was able to get to the QB on occasion. To hear the beat talk about in preseason, however; you would think he improved exponentially. If Sunday night was what we can expect from him, he may be better off transferring to a MAC school.

For Hinish to speak like he did before the Miami game about physicality and violence and making a statement, blah blah then to play like that after his last two games of last year, so bad. He shouldn't get more than 10 reps a game, and to me that's wasted reps on him.

He got smashed and pushed around 1-1 vs PSU, then OSU, and now Miami. He's getting thrown out of the play or pancaked in 1 on 1 scenarios, allowing for Miami to double Onye. That just can't happen 1-1 vs a guard, and it happened over and over.

How they played him over Dawson is criminal. The game film from last year didn't lie and exactly what many thought came true, except our coaching staff.

Saying he should transfer to a MAC school is harsh, but the reality is, he'd be an average player there at best. Yet he's a captain and starting at ND. You don't have to be a stud to be a captain, but your captains can't say one thing and completely do another.

Yeah there are just limits to that stuff. Against average teams he has enough juice and motor and brains to impact plays. I realize Miami's O line is probably top 5 so he may not see another line like that....until the playoffs.

If winning playoff games is the ultimate goal then you gotta give the reps to someone who potentially can hang with the big boys.

Hinish should probably be a third down pass rusher specialist.

DT has just been extremely elusive in recruiting. ND has not been able to get the dudes and that is probably why their scheme is what it is with undersized and "athletic" DTs.

I think he got swallowed up by a 6'6 330lbs (edit- 350lbs), NFL guard all night. He couldn't get loose using leverage and quick/suddenness like he does when successful.

I don't know how much of that was him or coaches decisions, but that was worst case Hinish and it's not good enough.

The secondary, LBs, and skill positions have elevated under Freeman. But I fear we may have taken a step back in the trenches from BKs teams.

I always need to sleep on a loss for a few days. My fandom allows for mega hyperbole and overreaction whenever ND loses. In my old age, I've learned to take a breath, sleep on it, wait for some reports/pods to come out and then see where I fall.

I think my biggest take away from the game, Sunday, was what appeared to be a lack of physicality, aggression, and swagger that the last two or three teams have had. I was not prepared for that and I'm still not over it. Miami is a team who has consistently been soft. They're a lot like USC. Very talented, but quick to fold. I feel like ND stooped to that level against them. Played conservative and let Miami gain too much confidence. Since when does ND defense not dictate results? Since when does ND offense not line up and smash with RBs? That formula works for them.

They can't start 0-2, but if they go 10-2 they will largely get the benefit of the doubt for last year + they passed the eye test (much to the disbelief of some here) to the national media against Miami. Think 10-2 gets them a 10 or 11 seed.

I'm not sure. He was under immediate pressure. Unless that is the initial call, the dump off is usually when you've went through your progressions and can't find anyone.

Upon reflection,
this is my fault. I have to watch Rudy before each season. I run each morning and dedicate those miles to beating the opposing team. During the run, I listen to Irish Illustrated and then Irish Breakdown in order to learn something about the other team and news. I make my kids pancakes. However, due to the game being on a Sunday, I went to church before the game. I spent too much time praying they would win. Mistake made. Will not happen again. None of that Saturday church for me. Sunday morning all the way. This time with clear headspace. Rant over

I wouldn’t worry about Miami historically being a soft team. Even if that’s true, this Miami team was so completely reloaded that basically the only thing it has in common with past Miami teams was the jersey.

Also, I feel like maybe there’s some rose colored memory going on with people’s recollections of last season? I remember a lot fewer games where our d “dictated results” and a lot more games where it looked like we were on the ropes and they made a miracle play to hang on. Almost got that on Sunday but for an insane grab by Daniels.

Its not that simple. 11-1, you're probably 5th or better. Playing at home round 1 at minimum, possibly even a BYE in 1st round.

Tbh with the new expanded playoffs it should be expected to get into the playoffs every year. But did people really think it’s title of bust? We lost our QB, high level guys in the middle and back end of the D. I was thinking the Miami game was 50/50 win odds. Carr first start away. He exceeded expectations. Our floor should be 10-2. I think we’ll be fine.

And I still think 11-1 is what they will be. But what if they slip up somewhere between now and Stanford? Say it's an inexcusable fluke loss to NC State, but they beat everyone else handily. My only point is that because of how they played against Miami and performed last year, they are going to get the benefit of the doubt if it's needed. That second loss just can't come against the 2 SEC teams they're playing, IMO.

The Irish went on the road in a tough environment and lost the turnover battle and got zero sustained pressure on a veteran QB (is this Carson Beck's 6th or 8th year?). That's a loss...period.

Here's what it isn't - This isn't the end of the season. This isn't a HC who can't handle to big moments. This isn't a team which can win a big game. All of those fears were put to bed last year.

Rome isn't burning. This is a good football team which will need to improve in certain areas. There was turnover at DC, but the talent is there (or better) than prior years - give him a minute to figure out how to maximize it. And oh yeah......the Irish have a QB, let's just keep him healthy.

Maybe it's just me, but yeah. Riley Leonard had serious issues passing (probably my favorite offensive player I can remember, but just the truth). Mills wasn't part of our playoff run and we still had it. Cross was playing with one arm. Jack Kiser would get swallowed by blocks and I think we all were eager for the day the younger more talented guys took his spot over.

Watts is a huge loss, but outside of that, we ran the table until we ran into a legendary OSU squad. So I've had title in my eyes all year...

In this era of talent dispersion the formula is to be in a position to make the playoff as often as possible with as much depth as possible and they are on track to keep doing that as far as I can tell.

One of the first 10 offensive plays was a run. You don't get to pretend you have training wheels on your new QB and do that. In the rain. And call designed QB runs half a dozen times on top of his scrambles. Minchey better stay loose. RS Frosh is BS - he is a college sophomore with nearly two full years on campus playing with and against CFP runner-up talent every day. Whole lot of WTF on offensive that I can't even pin on the players outside of Carr's terrible decision to pass in an obvious run RPO. INT was fluky but that ball should have never been in the air. Apparently the default setting on a gunslinger is to sling it - even when a Heisman trophy hopeful is standing right next to you.

Dumbrick needs to go at year end. Guess who was OC in 2016 when we threw the ball in a FVCKING HURRICANE all day at NC State? Second thought - send him home now and don't look back. Bonus points if Marcus kicks him in the ass as he leaves the Gug.

Love needs to strap his helmet on - its rolling on the ground like 15% of his touches. Hard to carry the ball from the sideline.

We had a number of runs that slipped or tripped over our own feet, including the very first one. Love also had a great run called back on a hold (IMO inconsequential). When we got back to run game we scored points. 4.9ypc for RBs likes to be picked apart saying Price's 30 yard runs skews it but there were plenty of trips and call backs that support the solid numbers - volume was the problem and I don't doubt 10 more carries would have generated at least 50 yards while setting a more physical tone to our benefit.

SMH on our heavy set. Just put a 6th or 7th OL in if we are going to have our WR act as TEs on the goal line (major whiff by Malachi and he is the biggest one of the bunch). Never in my life did I think ND would/could be so short of capable TE bodies. Eli - hands of stone is a problem that likely has no solution.

In real time - felt like we deserved to lose by three scores. On rewatch - we really should have won despite ourselves. Circus catch TD and freak INT on 2nd and 2 with clear run read allowing a 3&out FG in Q4..... after being bullied up front on both sides of the ball all day.
