I found this article and I think it’s worth a read.

https://thedraftnetwork.com/articles/marcus-freeman-notre-dame-defensive-coordinator-scheme

I’m not overly concerned about the DL because as you can see from that article, he’s very multiple. But I also think the assumption of a traditional 3 down front and how he actually uses it are different. I think we have guys for these roles.

Myjai Sanders is a Foskey clone, physically. You can see how he’s used in his highlights below.

Their Big End was Elijah Ponder, who’s 6’3 275. That’s basically the profile of MTA and Jayson A. Its also probably a prototype role for guys like Rylie Mills or Jason Onye. And I think Schweitzer and Botelho are perfect compliments as the overhang defenders or “Mug” LB’s. Both played significant amounts of their HS careers as off ball LB’s while also projecting to being collegiate pass rushers.

I also think we’ve recruited a lot for him to work with at DB. Not all these guys will hit but Hart, Henderson, Offord, And Riley just to name a handful. Variations of length, speed, and physicality

Good article. He's got a good roster to work with. Best case scenario for Freeman is he is very successful and is gone in 2 years. If he that is his strategy, I would just go big game hunting in recruiting.

As good as the defense has been hopefully it can get better under Freeman.
A few areas of potential improvement besides recruiting are interceptions and take away's in general seemed along way down and we need more sacks and I suppose just give up less points.

His specialty is havoc rate, so we should see an improvement.

I’m cautiously optimistic. Tenuta and BVG were also supposed to bring havoc and turnovers. Still have some ptsd from those two.

I’d actually disagree here. Our Havoc Rate has been top tier under Lea and I believe higher than UC this year, I’d say Freeman’s D more emphasizes Success Rate. We’re talking top 25 for both DCs regardless but Freeman’s challenge everything comes through in UCs Success Rate.

Just that terminology gets me a bit excited.
I wish JOK could be talked into another season (not really - go do great things in the league)

I feel like with turnovers we maybe did not get to work on that as much due to covid. When Elko arrived they talked about how he spent 15 or 20 minutes each practice just working on trying to strip the ball etc.

This hire is huge. From what I have gathered, he is a DUDE on the recruiting trail. He brings a ton of energy and his players love him. This is the biggest hire in BK's tenure at ND IMO. I think this is an improvement from Lea, and I was a huge Lea fan.

To be fair, BVG did bring the havoc. Just not the kind we expected.

Cheers and Go Irish!!

Yesterday someone on the LSU board jokingly named BVG as their top DC candidate along with a handful of other horrible candidates including “the chicken fryer at Raising Cane’s”. Lol...I thought it was funny and hadn’t even heard of Raising Cane’s before.

Oh man Cane's is pretty solid. Good breading and a phenomenal sauce for the chicken. Kind of a limited menu but their Texas toast is pretty solid too

Lets see how he makes adjustments during a game first, that's when you earn your paycheck.

I think having an African American defensive coordinator who is young and full of energy like Freeman it’s gonna pay off big time on the recruiting trail. I bet you’ll see us land a few more big fish

Freeman was successful with lesser talent at UC.
Hopefully he can raise the level here even higher.

Kind of early to say it is a home run hire, but the eagerness to address the DC position and hire an up and coming candidate is a good sign. Just don’t understand the hype. Our limited history of “big name” hires is not good.

I think when one looks at all the choices, Freeman was the best choice. Honest question: Did you have another name in mind that you believed fit ND’s situation better? I don’t believe any of us think this means ND will instantly be back in the CFP. The point is, ND didn’t have to take a step back in defense and continue working on the offense which you are correct...that’s the side of the ball that needs the most help. According to one of LAX’s earlier posts, it sounds like the offense will shift gears based on its personnel next season.

IMO, next season should be a huge transition year. New DC, new QB w/ new OL & new WR. They may go 8-4 or 10-2 but they have to get their shit together before the gauntlet of 2022-2023. That ain’t no joke. While we can all go back and watch the 2020 Clemson win, there’s not a person on this board who was alive the last time ND beat tOSU.

But we got those two “big” names on the downside of their career after the game had passed them by. Had ND hired Don Brown instead of Freeman, I’d be worried about the same thing. It’s all timing.

I know and I’m really happy we got Freeman. Didn’t feel the same about either Tenuta or BVG. Between Lea and Diaco, I have become more of a fan of having a conservative defense. Keep things in front, tackle well, and make the other team go on long, sustained drives.

I wonder if covid played any part in this decision? Covid will certainly impact spring ball and it is my opinion next season will be a version of this season.
