I do think they are going to try early in season to get the backup QB a lot of reps.. get them ready for rest of season just in case.. I hope it is Jarrard and get him ready for next year

There's just no benefit to answering the question any other way imo.

Either he wants to go to NFL one day, and he believes in honesty, so he won't outright lie and say no.

Or he wants to be at Notre Dame long term, but the leverage of perceived NFL interest helps when renegotiating his contract and asking for concessions from admissions on transfers.

Or he genuinely doesn't know.

Saying yes is obviously bad, and outright saying no doesn't have many benefits either imo.
I thought the "do you want to be an NFL head coach someday?" was a very good question that doesn't lend itself towards coach speak. You're correct that the easy thing / what a Lane Kiffen would do would be just lie and say "no, no interest in the NFL, they're going to have to bury me on campus."

The truth is that he probably does want to be an NFL coach at some point in the next 20+ years of his career but you can't answer the question that way without causing issues for yourself. So good on whoever the reporter was who asked that question and phrased it how he did.

I'm kind of disappointed that Freeman didn't spit facts re: USC.
Yeah, him taking the high road is what he does, but I hate it in situations like that. Riley gets to be a clown and Freeman goes "blame me" for it being cancelled lol... at least Brady Quinn got the facts on record.

he was by far most uncomfortable talking about the NFL. Talking about the team he was fine and confident. That definitely made it clear to me he wants to be an NFL head coach w/o question imo.

Thought it was funny in the middle of his presser Colon Cowherd and some guess are still throwing Marcus's name around the Steelers job with absolutely nothing to back it up and then turned it into a discussion about how if he was currently a DC somewhere in the league he would be everyone's #1 candidate.

Look at USC fan comments on this. There was a time when this would've bothered me, but it's so weird what taking the high road looks like in 2026.

I don't think enemies should enjoy the same grace as he shows others in and around the program but that's just me.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the running game was better by average. Teams cannot load up like they have in previous seasons. AW and co and going to feast on 5-6 in the box or CJ will have 400 yards that day.

Pick your explosion.
CJ running RPO all day.

My take is that - MF is young still, and good to great NFL gigs come open with some regularity. He has unfinished business at ND, and ND is investing in him and the program at the level needed to get over the hump. He knows the legacy he'll have if he brings ND a championship, and that the NFL opportunities will still be there when that happens.

This is 10000% conjecture obviously, but I think makes sense. Use the NFL for leverage now, with legitimate interest down the road.

No joke about NFL jobs opening up “with some regularity” I wouldn’t be surprised if no one in the future ever lasts longer than Tomlin in the same job
