Led Zeppelin's 'Stairway to Heaven' Targeted for Plagiarism

By Kory Grow May 19, 2014 2:10 PM

As Led Zeppelin promote the extravagant reissues of their first three albums for an early June release, a lawyer representing deceased Spirit guitarist Randy California is claiming the hard-rock legends stole the intro for their 1971 single "Stairway to Heaven" from Spirit's 1968 song "Taurus." Attorney Francis Alexander Molofiy wants to prevent the release of the Led Zeppelin IV reissue when the time comes, Bloomberg Businessweek reports. "The idea behind this is to make sure that Randy California is given a writing credit on 'Stairway to Heaven,'" Malofiy said. "It's been a long time coming."

Led Zeppelin and Spirit, who had a hit with "I Got a Line on You," played four gigs together in 1968 and 1969 (shows at which Businessweek claims Spirit played "Taurus"). Led Zeppelin also reportedly played a medley of songs that included Spirit's "Fresh-Garbage" – a song that appeared on the same LP side as "Taurus" – on their first U.S. tour.

In an interview with Listener magazine published the year of his death, California said he felt "Stairway to Heaven" was a "rip-off." "The guys made millions of bucks on it and never said 'Thank you,' never said, 'Can we pay you some money for it?'" he said. "It's kind of a sore point with me. Maybe someday their conscience will make them do something about it."

Spirit and California's family have waited until now to challenge the song's authorship because they did not have the means to pay attorneys. At the end of California's life, he would play sitar at an Indian restaurant in exchange for food.

A rep for Led Zeppelin declined to comment for Businessweek's story, but Page discussed the band's history with crediting songwriters after the fact in a recent interview with The New York Times. When asked why the group waited to credit Willie Dixon for bits of lyrics and melody that made their way into "Whole Lotta Love," he acknowledged, "Within the lyrics of it, there's [Dixons's] "You Need Love," and there are similarities within the lyrics. Now I'm not pointing a finger at anybody, but I'm just saying that's what happened, and Willie Dixon got credit. Fair enough."

Reissues of Led Zeppelin, Led Zeppelin II and Led Zeppelin III are due in stores on June 3rd. Each is available in a deluxe edition that contains a full disc of never-before-released studio takes and live tracks.

Doesn't surprise me. Led Zeppelin is notorious for this kind of stuff.

A couple of other videos illustrating their plagiarism:

Saw this on the news last night. I heard the track in question and it's different enough not be plagiarism. Even if it was stolen, what better time to use than 42 years later?
Plant, Paige, Bonham, and Jones were geniuses. They changed music forever.

Also, the opening guitar riff of "Spirit" sounds more like the very beginning of "W.O.L.D " by Harry Chapin to me.

Old news. Not that they didn't rip off some lines from Spirit and several other artists (Dazed And Confused is a direct rip off of a similar song), but all this has been out there for decades. Page was a genius, but he wasn't above lifting a bit from other artists.

Almost every artist is guilty of it to some extent. ZZ Top's La Grange was little more than a new version of JL Hooker's Boogie Chillin', The Beatles took a line from Chuck Berry and used it in Come Together and the Beach Boys' Surfin' USA is a direct copy of the Berry tune Sweet Little Sixteen. Page was just worse than most about doing it without giving credit to the original artist.

Also this. It's one reason why I don't listen to as much Zeppelin any more, I just prefer the originals a little more. Every artist lifts, it's a fairly accepted practice. Sometimes it's subtle, other times it's...uh...less than subtle (cough cough Robin Thicke cough cough)

Some of the Zep stuff they ripped off from others was pretty cool, though uncredited. The Lemon Song stole the "squeeze my lemon..." lyric from Robert Johnson (but then EVERYBODY stole a line or two from him...). My favorite is The Crunge, a great reworking of James Brown's Sex Machine!

Yeah, if Zep gets hit for taking from Johnson that whole entire era of rock royalty gets hit also...

Also, what are everyone's thoughts on Kanye West and really modern hip hop in general...? sampling and lyrics.

Stairway to Heaven still considered the greatest rock and roll song ever. It changed everything. It was noted for being hard rock and its outlandish length at that time. Compared to todays music it is neither, but still great.

Pretty much. A 10 minute song, that's an average track for a Tool album.

Lol. Zepplin basically ripped off the entire Robert Johnson catalogue and added words by Tolkien. Does not matter anyway. All music is related. I can pull riffs from any rock band and trace it back to a jazz artist.

That being said Zepplin rocks.

The "Lemon Song" uses part of the earlier "Travelling Riverside Blues" which was a tribute/cover of the Robert Johnson song of the same name...it was released as a single at some point in time in the early 90s.

Robert Johnson himself LIFTED that lyrical content from "She Squeezed My Lemon" by Roosevelt Sykes, IIRC.

Double lift!

This is how art works. It's kind of like science in that way. Nobody just invents totally new stuff out of thin air. Everything is built on what other people did before, and you take and reuse it and rework into something else.

Sounds like Page took one riff from a forgettable song and used it to open the most famous song of all time. He didn't steal the song; he borrowed a small piece of sound and built something great from it. That's the way it goes. The guy should be flattered (if he weren't dead).

Exaclty. Two men independently came up with Calculus in different countries. Who earned "the rights"? Some guys describes a process involving cloning and patents it, some other guy actually does it. Who owns the idea? Did John Williams rip off all his movie themes, or did he just tinker with certain themes already there--like everyone before him? You can easily make an argument for both.

I'd take it a step further and say that concepts of "intellectual property" are just overblown, and don't fit neatly with the reality of music (or lots of other things). They were utilitarian principles meant to encourage innovation: if you are the first to do X we'll give you exclusive rights to X for a while, so hurry up and do something cool. They have taken on a life of their own, for obvious reasons.

But pretending like an idea can neatly be attributed to one person and not another is way over-simplistic. The Beatles didn't invent, say D-C-G, and Lynyrd Skynard and Pearl Jam didn't rip them off. That's just an easy chord progression that sounds nice.

I've got no issues with the sampling, and it's usually done pretty well... but good God does Kanye suck at rapping lately. He doesn't rap, he just talks aggressively, and his lyrics aren't really that creative anymore. There are a few hidden gems in his new stuff, but when half of your newest album is about being a god and being inside of Kim Kardashian, you're not at the top of your game.

College Dropout? Tremendous album.
Late Registration? Solid.
Everything after those two? Not so much. (exception: GOOD Music Fridays were nice).

I liked the big three, "Monster," "All of the Lights," and "Power," but otherwise I wasn't super impressed. I should clarify by saying that a lot of his music has been good, but none of his new stuff is on the same level as College Dropout. Especially Yeezus. That record is a pile of hot garbage.

Agree to disagree then. Although you really can't go wrong with early Yeezy either.

The pacing, production values, atmosphere on the riff in question sound the same so I would classify it as a pretty blatant rip off.
