I still don't get it. Do the players want him to lie to the media and say, "Our upperclassmen are playing at a phenomenal level. How we lost a game must be all my fault."

He called you out to the ****ing media. Big whoop. Wanna fight about it?

<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/30GD25un0XQ" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

It wasn't even a big call out. He said they're working hard, but they haven't broken through yet. What the **** is bad about that? It's pretty clear that had you broken through we wouldn't have lost 3 games. He didn't tell the media or the fans anything they didn't already know.

Here's my prediction (perhaps just my blind faith hope...).

Those guys play out of their minds this week. They finally recognize what Kelly has been talking about...realize that his tough love was really the best thing for them. After the alma mater, we play Kumbaya. We end the season on a huge run.

How's that? Anyone with me?!

Really? In one week Cierre went from outsider talk of winning awards and leaving early to he's weak and doesn't run hard?

Really?? You always put words in people's mouths? Please see the phrase "right now" in that sentence. I'm noticed the past couple of games that Cierre has begin to dance a little more which strays from the norm of what we saw earlier in the season. "right now" means right now....in other words....at this very moment. Gray is running more decisive. It was more of a compliment to Gray. I think they're both great RBs. One is just struggling with his decision making. Sheeeeesh........step away from the keyboard and go for a nice stroll. It may help.

In reality his comments hit the nail on the head, but you cant come out and say that to the media. Kelly needs to keep that to himself. Nothing will tear a team apart faster then the my guys and his guys get drawn. Stupid Move. No matter who recruited the player its Kelly's job to coach them up.

I'm really very calm right now. I appreciate the Gray compliment. I think he's been fantastic. I've just been really pleased with how effective Wood has been. Don't think we've seen a running back that explosive since Julius Jones.

I think this board is just overreacting a bit right now to about 2 really bad quarters. That's all. Not intending to start a battle.

Peace.

All you said +...

Perception is a vague thing in the eyes of those that do not have the relationship with a Coach or with a player. Kelly said some time ago that he knows what and how he can say things and the relationship he has with the players and how THEY accept and understand what and how he says things. As there are different shades of blue, there are different shades of how a statement is accepted... all I'm saying on that. The players going on twitter is unacceptable. Many coaches ban any talk or 'tweets'. Looks like that may become a rule in the Irish house if it keeps up the way it has.

Diz

I agree. I mean......as a coach, you have a right to be frustrated with a team that should be 7-0, but can't seem to get out of it's own way. As a player, you have a right to disagree with a coach that calls you out. Just don't take it to twitter. As much as Brian Kelly has to interview, he's going to say something out of the way or that can easily be taken out of context. If nothing else, players should rally around each other to change the coach's tone or prove him wrong. orrrrrr......prove that what he's thought about you all along is right. aaaaaahhhhh.....

Since you seem to know a lot about the inner workings of the team.... just how many players were his statements clear to?

This is the point: you, nor I, really know how players are reacting to this. Even those who tweeted, might have tweeted in a moment of "WTF?", and might feel differently, after having some time to digest Kelly's statements. So to condemn the guy from a position of ignorance is pretty weak.

I understand what you are saying but everyone's comment in this forum is from a position of ignorance. Posters who find nothing objectionable about Kelly's comments are commenting from the position of ignorance. They nor do I not know how the upperclassmen have "come along" in Kelly's system.

What I condemn Kelly for is his either underhanded or careless comments that may have divided this team for no reason. Is it your contention that his comments were not divisive and that this is much ado about nothing? Considering Kelly apologized, I find it hard to argue that it is much ado about nothing.

No worries man. I'm more disappointed in Wood than anything else. Not bashing him at all. I wanted to see him breakout. It's obvious that he is still young and needs more big game experience. He'll be fine.

I just feel like he only had one bad game. That's what I was reacting to. I think he's going to have sick numbers next year.

I've already said that he should have handled the question better. What I take exception with, is people trying to characterize this as the same as if Kelly called a Press Conference, gathered as many reporters as he could, and blasted Weis' recruits. It wasn't like that. I'm not even sure that he called anyone out. Cynics can say that he definitely meant to call out the upperclassmen, but just because they see it that way, that doesn't mean it is so. And the media is just running rampant with this. Not one of those "talking heads" has the stones to say, "Hey, maybe we are making a big to-do of nothing." And the general public, including many here, are following right along.

Like I said put up or shut up, Looks like coach got the boys attention, which they needed I think the week off hurt them more than helped them . They looked flat the first quarter against USC we will win the rest of our games including Stanford. Thats right you heard it and you can thank your coach for getting the most uot of the players......

I keep obsessing about our rock bottom and what will it be. When will the program go the other way and win? Was this the moment. I don't think so. IMO Kelly can't be himself here. He flips out on the side line and he gets his hand slapped. he makes a mild comment challenging his team and being honest about how some humans are winners and some are gifted but not winners. Kelly is successful because he is a winner and recognizes other winners. He is still trying to teach losers to win. and IMO it can't be done. we will be average until the losers leave.

I said many times a dual threat qb will fix our offense. However our defense still sucks and will not be good for 2 more years. We get absolutely no pressure on the qb and we don't tackle well.

I pray Kelly has the strength to stand up and risk his job to fix our program. If this doesn't work Notre dame will be a joke and should join the ivy league. God Bless coach Kelly!

GO IRISH!!!!

The issue is not that he called out his team, it is that he called out some guys. he split the team and said these guys got it but these guys do not. That is the issue. That is like saying "I got 4 kids but the oldest never disappointments me, but the other 3, yikes" in front of the whole family.

Sometimes the truth hurts, and he wason point, I believe. Aaron Taylor echoed the same point. It gets easy to lose, and extremely difficult to fight adversity, especially in the spotlight.

When BK came in the bend, the players said that he was changing the "me" attitude Weis brought with him. The "how can i get to the NFL" attitude, and I wonder if some of that attitude is left over still. Once a mentallity is put in place it is very difficult to break. Aside from Teo/Blanton/Harrison, who on the defense do you see around the ball every play, playing with fire/passion? The freshman.

When I watch Alabama play, and I know nothing about them, I can spot the upper classmen on the field by their demeanor. The same goes with Oklahoma, LSU...etc. With ND, all the players look the same. You just don't see any leadership radiating on to the field, especially in clutch situations. It's easy to win when playing well, but its a lot harder to win when you aren't, and this team hasn't figure that lesson out yet

Actually he said that some kids got it, and the others weren't quite there yet. But he also said that those that weren't quite there yet were making great progress, and would get there.

The way I saw it, 2 things could have happened today. #1 they play together and blow out Navy, or the fold like a bad poker hand and maybe win or get run over again.

I guess we saw how separate they are.

That's true, and then he went on to clarify that comment. But my correction wasn't meant to be a literal recollection of his words. You said that he said it as if the upperclassmen were embarassing him and the team. I didn't see that anywhere in his words. He said that they were making great progress, and would get to where he wants them to be. I don't see how that could be construed as being embarassing to him or the team.

I do not like the fact that a bunch of media nancys have the ability to make such a big deal about this issue. Brian Kelly must have absolute power as their coach or this doesnt work. What he said has been twisted/conjectured and totally miss played. If this coach cant say 'my upperclassmen arent pulling their weight' then he may as well go look for another job. Obviously someone got the memo by the way they played against Navy. Who's running this show anyway-people who critisize this dont have a clue.
