Man I would have loved to play my college ball for Brian Kelly. He knows his stuff and seems like a good guy. He's the right guy for this program and I can't wait for epic Hoke scUM teams vs. Kelly's ND teams with National Title implications. Instant classics. Kelly knows and respects the traditions of ND, he will bring us back.

Kelly-the-Master. He's hitting all the major outlets and has been doing so since he arrived. Thanks be that he is also a true football guy with a good personality, who knows how to say things honestly without saying too much or wrongly. Quite a guy.

Basically is appalled by the Red Sox pitching but is even more appalled at his QB play. Says that Dayne and Tommy were both basically freshmen last year as far as schematics. Also says that his main focal point has been to shore up the defense. Also talks about his temper and how overblown it was.

Kelly's recent media appearances remind me of this Urban Meyer quote about the pressure of being HC at ND:

From the inside looking out, Urban Meyer remembers watching how the pep rallies and the luncheons – not the X’s and the O’s – slowly wore on his bosses, Lou Holtz and Bob Davie.

"You only have so much energy," said the former Irish assistant coach and current ESPN analyst. "Lou and Bob would always have to be concerned with whether they were saying the right things at all these functions. They had to be concerned with the walk from the church. And none of those things help you win football games.

"Those are the kinds of things that wore me out at Florida. But, especially at Notre Dame, it was almost a relief to go on the road."

Part of me wishes ND would stop burdening its head coaches with so many non-football/ political responsibilities. I hope Kelly doesn't get burned out with this constant media blitz.

No he is not, he is a radio troll. He says stupid stuff to polarize his listeners, nothing more. Granted he is entertaining, but I would never consider him a sports guy.

My opinion differs, but different strokes, different folks. Cheers!!!

Kelly was talking about having to develop a new QB every year and how that was a burden.. unfortunately, I think he's going to have to do the same thing next year.. unfortunate, but maybe necessary

Kelly doesn't think so. If he did, he wouldn't be wasting his time with Rees this season.

Did he really say that? Not something I would imagine him saying even if he was.

Would it be so awful if Tommy was QB next year? Whats his record in starting games? Has he been the reason we've lost any games this season? No. He's got room to improve, yes, but he's only a Sophomore for Pete's sake. He can throw a few picks as long as we win, he's the one I want leading a drive with the game on the line. We don't have another QB that can handle that pressure right now and knows this offense in and out.

Well he did have a pick near the end zone to Floyd and fumbled the ball in the red zone against Michigan.......soooo you could point to that being a reason for the loss...alongside Gray....

9 Turnovers in 4 Games

Still like the kid just making a rebuttle to that comment in particular.

He made some interesting comments about Independence and the SEC as well. He was asked ideally, which would he rather be: in a conference, or independance. He chose Independence, but not for the reasons I thought. He said short term independence allows us to continue recruiting nationally, while joining a conference would marginalize that market and hurt our chances with recruits outside of the Midwest region. He said that could change later down the road, but right now independence is where he wants to stay. As far as the SEC, he strives to be able to compete with the best in the SEC because they've set the bar with their national championships in recent years, and they've met all the challenges that have come their way from other conferences. To do that, he realized that we have to improve the defense and start pulling in those recruits. I have to agree, and we're starting to see some dividends on that defensive recruiting already.

I feel ya, and while the fumble in the red zone and the pick were both costly, the defense in the 4th quarter was the bigger head scratcher to me. Tommy made the winning drive to get the TD we needed in that game, but in 30 seconds the defense let Michigan get 2 plays and score again...totally inexcuseable in my opinion. They did play awesome for 3 quarters, but it still boggles my mind how everything could completely implode with the 4 TDs given up in the 4th after they played such good defense.

The turnovers are definitely costly though. You take away just one of those turnovers at Michigan, and if Ruffer hits the FG in the red zone we win the game, no questions asked. I love our defense, they've been lights out pretty much all year aside from that 4th quarter at Michigan...maybe thats why it's hard to understand how everything broke down.

Not in so many words. He said his QB play was like being in a room with rubber walls, jokingly of course but the message was sent. This was in direct reference to the BoSox inconsistent pitching.

I suggest listening to it yourself. My summation is really vague and many things he may have said can easily be taken out of context.

Kelly did NOT say that he was "appalled" by his QB play. He said that watching some of the mistakes by the team makes him feel like bouncing around in his own rubber room sometimes. This is in response to a Cowherd remark about rubber rooms, and Kelly was laughing through the remark. Listen to the thing---it isn't long. For goodness sakes don't take your spin from us guys with our biased filters.

I completely agree, there is way to many responsibilities outside of coaching for coach Kelly.

What? This actually hurts my soul. There is no worse person than Cowherd. He is the embodiment of everything I loathe about the sports media. If you think this guy is a "real sports guy" I pity you.

I'm not as much mad as I am disappointed.

I blame the advent of reality TV when it comes to thd decline of contemporary journalism/sports media, theres much more emphasis on the dramatic...especially on ESPN these days.

Ok, maybe reality TV has nothing to do with it, but it was the first thing that came to me when I thought of sports media today.

Maybe not directly, but the same mentality that has made reality TV popular has also diluted the quality of journalism, sports and otherwise, because the focus is about appealing to the lowest common denominator rather than presenting the highest quality product possible. Its all about selling ad space. The more people listen, the more you get for the ad space. The smarter you make the programming, the less people will listen.

Cowherd is every bit as much evidence of this phenomenon as Jersey Shore or Survivor or American Idol. Its all unadulterated garbage.

I like this stat from the Urban Meyer article...
The ND sports info team unearthed this fun factoid about turnovers this week: Notre Dame’s nation leading 13 giveaways are the most through three games by an Irish team since 1977. That team committed 14 through its first three contests, but quarterback Joe Montana eventually helped elevate that team into a national champion.
Anyway, I enjoyed a concise answer on why ND should remain independent. Enough with the money we get, our recruiting is really the foundation for every other argument on why being an independent is an advantage for ND. If BK gets his guys, we win games, ND gets their TV deals and national recognition.
