This is turning into a soap opera. Really?

Response to Mr. Daniels

The DaVaris Daniels story - Locker Room Prep Talk

That's on the tape, too, isn't it, Phillip?

8. DaVaris said he would choose Notre Dame or Miami. If possible, the Sun-Times wanted to break the story. This is a very competitive media town, Notre Dame is a major player in the sports market, so we didn't want to wait for everybody to learn the news at a press conference if we could get it beforehand. The time has passed when the Tribune knew everything that was going on in the Bears' camp because the Bears' owner/coach and the Tribune's editor were pals.

"Unable to qualify academically for admission to his first choice, Notre Dame, wide receiver DaVaris Daniels of Vernon Hills has decided to enroll at the University of Miami."
I believe the writer had this right in his scoop when he printed this the day before the scheduled press conference. I also believe that if DaVaris did qualify at ND and he was planning to attend ND, that would have been a great time to hold the presser and stick it to this reporter.
But since he did not qualify at ND, holding the presser would cause an embarassment to DaVaris in two ways:
1. Because of the story breaking the day before, he would be asked if he was choosing Miami becase he did not qualify at ND. If he admitted that he did not qualify at Nd, then he in reality would admit to lying because he said in the anouncement that he was choosing between ND and Miami when there was no choice.
2.He would be humiliated if he had to admit to the press that he did not qualify at ND. A lot of kids never qualify at Nd, most don’t, but none of them would like to tell the press that and have it reprinted all over the nation in a press conference which should be a happy occasion.

Anyway, I think the writer is a scum bag for writing the story and I wish DaVaris well. I think he worked hard to qualify and he shouldnot feel ashamed because he didn't. Heck. I was lucky I qualified to graduate from high school, never mind being accepted at ND.

I think what you said is very true and is probably what happened. I'm gonna be honest and say I doubt he qualified academically. Not many of the kids we're recruiting would actually "qualify" for ND. C'mon the average student at ND had a high school 4.0 GPA and a 32 ACT. But maybe he also really did reconsider his options. Perhaps this reporter spurred him to think about his academic capabilities, and maybe Daniels wants to prove everyone wrong. Maybe he thought more about working w/ Kelly and admissions to improve his grades for admittance. Maybe, just maybe, he had a change of heart and now believes he has what it takes to be successful in the classroom and on the field at Notre Dame. Just a thought.

He didn't make the grade academically. So he's waiting until the fall for an all star game to announce. Maybe he's going to see how the semester is going or retesting.

This situation has taken some of the sting off his Miami semi-verbal thing. I don't think he's even visited the U. It really should have been a smoother process. I don't exactly know if I feel bad or not...

I feel bad for Daniels in all this. Reporters were so quick to break a story (an unimportant one really) that they created a huge mess for him. Hopefully he can get his grades up and come to ND, if not it sucks but i wish him all the best

Remember ND was his first choice...can you imagine wanting to go to a college so bad, the one that you rooted for all of your life only to be told that you don't have the grades because you dicked around when you were a freshman /sophmore. This has got to be difficult for him, maybe he'll try to get his last semester grades up and come to south bend.

Thank you for being honest about what you think may have happened.

Post was meant as fun ribbing with IrishMoore1, not intended as a slam.

I'm not aware of ever having made a fart joke, but I always get a kick out people when they start an opinion by saying "I'll be honest here." Are they dishonest the rest of the time?

Logical fallacy, completely.

Whatever happens to DaVaris, I wish him the best of luck.

He and his father seem like a couple of nice guys...

Hopefully this mess gets sorted out.

I was agreeing with Fighting Irish, this family seems like the opposite of Seantrel et al.

I know, but I just don't see how he seems like the opposite of Seantrel.

Press conferences, Academic issues, False news reports, Drama.

The Daniels = Nice Family that were put into a bad situation
The Hendersons = Rapping thugs that put themselves into a bad situation

I have sympathy for the Daniels... The Hendersons just straight up chose the wrong path.

I do understand where you're coming from. He has had similar surrounding happenings as Seantrel has. However, his handling of the situation has been dramatically different. First of all, he is not milking the recruiting season even nearly as much as Seantrel did. Second, he really has not done anything very diva-like. Yes, he has been a little bit of a mystery as far as what he is really thinking, but his and his father's backlash at the reporter was well-warranted I believe. Might it have been taking the high road to just keep their mouth shut? Maybe. But someone has to stand up to some of the ridiculously terrible journalism that goes on in some papers. His dad also said some very complimentary things about other Chicago reporters.

I think he was upset about the article. And I also think he wants to think out his choice a little more - no one can blame a kid for not exactly knowing where he wants to go to college during June of the summer before their senior year. I certainly didn't.

Terry, I think you are an awesome poster. And I appreciate the pain you bring on a regular basis, so don't take this response the wrong way! :D
