So who did Kelly play and/or beat out of conference?

He did beat Oregon State, in Corvallis. He also beat Fresno State and Illinois.

Not exactly USC, Alabama, and Oklahoma. But legitimate competition, nonetheless.

Let's not forget folks that he showed a lot of "player development" THIS LAST YEAR for us---he doesn't have anything to prove on that scale; and he beat a bunch of people with that player development too. I'm not worried about how everybody else does actually; I'm concerned with how OUR GUY does, and he seems to do it all quite well.

Yeah Kelly beat 6 ranked teams from 2007 to 2009, which is 6 more than Notre Dame did during the same time span.

He also beat a handful of 7, 8, and 9 win teams that weren't ranked at the time of play. For example, Cincy crushing a 9-4 Rutgers team 47-15 in Pascataway in 2009.

So....yeah.

Can you explain to me what this comment was intended to mean?

That Kelly is ND's coach, I suppose. Don't know if it was faceticous quip or a serious comment.

Maybe he's saying, what Kelly did at UC coaching and recruitingwise was germaine last off season when he was starting his new job. At this point Kelly has a year of coaching AT ND and a year of recruiting AT ND on which to guage his capabilities. He won elsewhere with 2s, 3s and the unranked and unwanted. He plays a tougher schedule now but he has better material and so far is improving on what was here when he arrived.

Holtz didn't have Southern Cal or Penn St on his OOC schedule when he was at William & Mary, NCS, ARK, or MIN. And he didn't have the talent at those places that he did at ND (at least through the Cerrato years) and he his teams excelled as his career developed. .

Despite a new offensive scheme, a new defensive scheme, and a rash of injuries to key players the team improved. A number of players stepped up for those starters that went down and all played well, above expectations. I'll take that as player development.

His first full recruiting class was a consensus #8. He recruited nationally much better than I expected him to and it was a combined staff effort. His staff laid the groundwork for the next class and is already reaping the benefit of their work. I don't expect a Top 10 Class in '12 because of the reduced numbers in the class but the quality will be Top 10 and it will complement the needs the team still has. A quality DB and Big OL were a great start.

Combination of player development and bad conference.

Both BCS bowls, Cincinnati got worked (and don't give me Kelly wasn't there for Florida because they still would have gotten whooped) and as Big If pointed out Oklahoma worked them over too. Against teams with great coaches and talent he could not keep up.

Remember there are only about 25 guys that get 5 stars on rivals.
Over 1000 get 3 stars so as long as 5% of 3 stars turn into stars they will always outnumber 5 stars.

I though this would be an appropriate thread for this video.

Go to 03:00, or just watch the whole video (you'll get a better sense of the comment that way). One of the reporters asks the question, in several forms, is it a harder sell (Kelly's style of football) at Notre Dame than it was at Cincy? Is it the type of player that goes to Notre Dame? Are they not buying in?

In my opinion, Kelly's response speaks loud and clear. He wants an army of HIS men.

Was hoping someone mentioned this.

It seems that a few of the older players didn't really appreciate those comments. I hope that BK doesn't lose the team for the rest of the year.

Yea, I generally don't expect much from these videos, so that comment took me by surprise.

I think coach is fed up with whatever it is "Charlie's" boys are bringing to the team on a day to day basis. I wonder what it is, exactly, that was so ingrained into them from the previous staff. My guess would be a lack of consistent focus, energy and passion. Maybe that Weis NFL attitude is still lingering somewhere.. I don't know.

He could have also just meant that it's tough to develop a kid that has already been somewhat developed in a completely different system. At least with freshman you can start them from scratch in your system.. who knows.

Maybe BK has been bitten by the balls n swag bug!

"Someone else's kids"=Political schmuck

First off it's a stupid argument about MY kids for one glaring reason: by the time these kids get to college they have had: Parental coaching, some sort of Pop Warner coaching, middle school coaching and high school coaching!

Second it's always an easy out. "It's not my fault, the other guy ruined it/them."

The whole point of coaching is to develop talent. See Meyer, Tressel, ad naseum. Weis left BK plenty of great talent. BK, is, as someone else pointed out not capable of beating good coaches with good talent consistently. He is not the RKG if that is what your looking for. Check his history.

He is also lacking moral fiber. See his leaving the girls softball team high and dry, Cincy, comments last year and this year concerning team play, Declan, I can go on and on. The guy is a huckster and his ego is out of this world. He does not care about ND past or present. It is all about him. Cheers to the next 3-4 years!

Side note: When Bob Diaco gets hired away, ouch!

Wow! I guess laying out BK's flaws is taboo! The perfect example of his hucksterism!

Me: I worshiped Holtz. I thought Davie was ok, but in a bad situation. Willingham was a clown. Weis, good heart, not ready. BK so far seems to have been also promoted beyond his abilities.

BK is a victim of his own ego though. He had a great life in Cincy and should have recognized it. He wanted the fame and power but is now facing the responsibility. He is handling it just as expected.

You think Meyer, Pellini, Carrol, Brown, Tressel, Beamer, Stoops etc. would make the comments about their team's heart as much as this guy?

I wanted to believe. I was drinking so much BK kool-aid my co-workers had to slap me!
I just have realized what I knew when I saw how he handled his leaving Cincy. He will do whatever it takes to feel good about himself. Classic Narcissism.

I think you (and everyone else) is entitle to post an opinion. Even a strong opinion. I despise people who paint with a broad brush and making sweeping generalizations based on. And I especially despise people who state projections or opinions as fact.
