Hello everyone I was just assigned my dorm and I am in Keenan Hall. Any feedback on the hall? Is the North Quad have a good dining hall? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

....kidding aside (I was in Stanford) Zaland Pizza is yummy (and cheap) and your basement is quite awesome compared to a lot of dorms. Not the best dorm, but definitely not the worst. You'll have fun.

Congrats on your admission to ND! Former Knight here. Lived in Keenan all four years during undergrad.

First, the bad:

• The dorm, having been built during the '50s, resembles a bomb shelter. It has none of the charm of the old ivy-covered dorms on South quad, and none of the amenities of the newer dorms (read: A/C).
• It's attached to Stanford, which is like our smelly, classless, hard-partying little brother.
• It's next to Zahm, which houses the saddest group of wanna-be frat boys on campus (our hated rivals). They were in the process of reforming their image when I graduated in 2006, so this may have changed.
• Most of us ate in North Dining Hall, at which the food is inferior to South Dining Hall.

The good:

• The dorm has a laid-back reputation, and smells much better than most male dorms (read: Stanford).
• Keenan frequently wins Best Male Dorm of the Year, for all around awesomeness.
• It's big yearly activity, the Keenan Revue, is widely regarded as among the best.
• It's interhall sports teams are dominant.
• It has an epic basement/ common-area, including a good weight room, large comfy areas for studying/ socializing, a couple big screen TVs, and lots of game tables.
• The best part of the basement (which merits it's own point on this list) is 'Za Land, Keenan's in-house snack bar, which is open from 8:00pm to 1:00am. Available for purchase are pizza, burgers, hot dogs, candy, chips, ice cream... everything you could possibly need during those hours.

Those last two are key. When it's freezing cold in February and you don't have to leave your dorm to eat or lift at 11:00 pm, you'll understand.

In sum, it's a great dorm. Get involved early; especially with the Great Pumpkin, the Keenan Review, and one of the interhall teams.

Free weights, duh. Keenan's not a girl's dorm.

The important thing is that it's a got a nice selection of free weights and benches, and they're in good shape (at least they were when I left 5 years ago). Most guys dorms have crappy weight rooms, so you have to trudge through the snow to Rolf's or the Rock if you wanna work out in the winter... motivation becomes a real killer then.

An open window and a cheap box fan from Wal-Mart usually takes care of it, but when it gets really humid in August or September... ugh.

In an effort at complete irrelevancy, I was assigned to Keenan my freshman year in 1958 [we moved through different sets of dorms every year back in the Pleistocene.] It was nice enough and I got to play IM basketball with Nick Buoniconti.

The cafeteria at the time was clean with horrible food [lots of grilled cheese/overdone and sh!t-on-a-shingle]. Doubtless things have improved. The only food for sale in the dorm came out of coin machines. Fortunately one of our guys was entrepreneurial and brought in sandwiches et al, which were cleaned out every night by ravenous freshmen. "Hambone" Daugherty may have been a millionaire with or without a degree. And the exercise room .... uhhhh ....what exercise room??

and, oh yeh, we walked in the windy snow to class both ways uphill and against the wind. [OK. Maybe it WAS flat and just one way....]

p.s. Zahm was a bit livelier in those days. That is where the "bowling ball caper" I told on a different thread happened.

Keenan's a good hall to be in.

Despite what your frosh-o leaders may tell you, north and south dining halls both have their benefits and advantages over one another. I simply choose the one that's closest to me when my stomach gets a rumblin'. One thing North has is Make-your-own pizza, which is my favorite at that place.

A couple years ago, Keenan got a new rector and some changes have been made to the dorm since. I think the guys in that place have adjusted by now and things seem to be fine.

You are indeed quite close to Zahm which has implications for you in the dining hall. Don't sit close to the Zahm table(s) if you want to be able to hear the person sitting across the table from you.

Whiskeyjack speaks some major truths. Thank God February is the shortest month of the year. (At ND, it feels like the longest)

And finally, congratulations. You are about to embark on the best four years of your life.

Jason's comment reminds me that I forgot to add a positive point about NDH to my initial list. While (IMO at least) South Dining Hall is prettier and serves better food, NDH is definitely a better place to hang out and talk with friends. The lay-out is open and more conducive to conversation; most importantly, you can claim a table before getting your food, so it's easier to find your friends.

I'm feeling like the red-headed step child. My dorm doesn't exist anymore. OMM can't tell any stories about since it was still a Holy Cross Seminary in his day.

I had friends in both Stanford and Keenan. Hell, I probably knew people in every dorm. The guy who lived in the quarters in the stadium was in a couple of my classes my sophomore year.

I preferred South Dining Hall. My recollection is that we were assigned either North or South. The way are operated these days is so much different I would have no clue.

When your on campus and strolling around St. Mary's lake, stop to look at the memorial to Holy Cross at the bottom of the hill where it stood. I think the old backstop for the softball field is still there.

Keenanite here too: '92 - '96. My freshman year, I actually lived in Pangborn and then they converted it to a girls' dorm.

I liked Keenan just fine -- it was much more conveniently located than Panborn. Piece of advice: stay away from the foosball table in the basement. You'll get addicted.

I just graduated, class of 2011, and I lived in Keenan all 4 years. In terms of dorm quality, it's pretty old and not the best. However, the quality of people in the dorm is top notch. Amazing people make up this dorm community (hence the multiple dorm of the year awards).

There's no AC, but just get a big fan and you'll be fine. U don't really need ac anyway cuz it's cold majority of the year, starting in october all the way to even april.

The location of the dorm is amazing: North Dining hall is literally less than 50 yards away. The library is a 5 minute walk. La fortune is about a 3 minute walk away. The health center is right behind the dorm. These things alone make the dorm a very good place to live, especially during the dead of winter/and you are a science major. If you are a business major, it would probably be better to live in south or west quad, closer to the mendoza building. (business majors don't really need the library).

People argue that north and south dining hall are equal or whatever. I would say that North has better lunch (they serve breakfast, and there's a cute girl who makes a salad for you), and South generally has better dinner. I ate a North a lot because it was right there, and I don't have to walk a long way in the cold.

The basement is really sweet. I don't think any dorm has a better common room than Keenan. It has a mini theatre w/ projector room, and a huge room w/ couches, tables, big tv, ping pong etc. Plus the Zaland pizza can't be beat, only 1$ a slice. There's also a council room on the other end near the weight room along w/ a mini library. There's also a music room.

And lastly, Keenan hosts the best dorm event out of all the dorms: the Keenan Revue. Tickets sell out in 10 minutes. As a keenan resident, u automatically get 4 tickets, and you'll be able to take some lucky lady to see the show.

Unfortunately, St. Mary's this past year disallowed keenan from using there auditorium for the show, and so we had to use a venue on campus (Stepan Center), which allowed the ND event people to censor the show... because Taylor Swift's brother complained about something.. and yeah its kinda complicated. So I'm not sure what will happen this upcoming year. The show also cost a lot more money to host on campus.

So any Keenan Alums out there, please donate to the dorm so the Revue can still live on.

Best advice anyone will ever give you to make your 2-4 years in Stanford a blast so listen up: learn enough about hockey to suck up to FT. Also, if FT asks you if you're going to floor hockey the answer is always "yes" unless you have a very legitimate and air tight excuse. If you get in FT's good graces, he will have your back 100% on anything. I'm talking driving you to the airport, keeping you out of trouble with the University and handling things in house, etc.

If you're an idiot, like myself, and try to debate how lacrosse is "better" than hockey... it will only end in misery.

Fun things to look forward to in Stanford are:

• The Pirate Dance... awesome timing with how early it comes in the year and totally awesome time. Not quite the Yacht Dance in terms of rep... but many girls attest that it is by far the most fun SYR of them all.
• Birthday Laking.
• Griff Hoops. A lot of fun and a great way to play pickup ball without dealing with the headaches that come with trying to play at the Rock or Rolfs.
• Dis-O (although it's been toned down some since my freshman year where a ton of kids got arrested at like 4 PM in the afternoon...).
• Getting to use the Keenan basement whenever you want in all of its glory. This includes Zaland pizza. Mmmmmm.
