WACO, Texas - University of Notre Dame junior wide receiver Golden Tate has been named to the 2009 AFCA Coaches' All-America Team announced Thursday by the American Football Coaches Association.
Tate becomes the 49th Notre Dame player and the 56th selection to the AFCA All-America Team. Only Oklahoma has had more players named (52) and more players represented (60 selections) on the AFCA All-America Team.
Tate is the first Notre Dame player tabbed for this team since cornerback Shane Walton in 2002 and the first offensive player selected since offensive tackle Aaron Taylor in 1993.
The 5-11, 195-pounder from Hendersonville, Tenn., rewrote the Irish receiving record book in 2009 as he tied or broke six school records. Tate set single-season records with 93 receptions for 1,496 yards and tied the school record with 15 receiving touchdowns. He broke the career receiving yards record with 2,707 yards and set the school record for most 100-yard receiving games in a season (nine) and in a career (15).
A finalist this year for the Biletnikoff Award, presented annually to college football's top wide receiver, Tate ranked in the top eight nationally in nine receiving categories. He tied for first in total touchdowns (18), scoring (108) and scoring per game (9.0 points), ranked second in receiving touchdowns and was fourth in total receiving yards and receiving yards per game (124.67). Tate ranked sixth in total receptions, seventh receptions per game (7.75) and eighth in yards per catch (16.09).
Tate added 186 rushing yards on 25 carries with two rushing TDs and also scored on an 87-yard punt return at Pittsburgh. He scored at least one TD in each of the final 11 games and no player had more 100-yard receiving games this year than Tate. <!-- STORY AD BEGINS HERE -->

Two AA's in 16 years. First at a skill position since Ismail in 1990.

And people wonder if the talent level has been down.

I also feel this is a richly deserved honor for Golden Tate, but favorite offensive player in your lifetime, seriously? Over Brown, Ismail, Bettis, Brooks, or Zellars? That's a pretty serious mancrush.

I was born in 1987..... so they were all there when i was very young and didnt know much about football. They were great, amazing actually, but it just wasnt my biggest thing then. GI Joe was probably my favorite thing at that time.

I liked Brady as well, but Tate, IMO, has shown more athletic ability and game breaking ability, as well as being great in the clutch...... Brady was a very good game manager, who was also clutch in the end. Respect both, but I am just a huge fan of Tate.

You should punch your parents in their mouths, for not having you sooner. The Holtz years were phenomenal.

Just an example of what you missed:

Some of the younger fans should watch these clips. Its quite noticeable the difference in tenacity and passion from recent Notre Dame teams and these clips.

Watch this from the Sugar Bowl back in 92 and tell me if the passion exuded in this game is what you see from recent vinatage Notre Dame? This is whats missing guys, we need leadership back.

And, note.........

The Irish made quite a few mistakes in that game. But they never looked like a team that expected to do anything other than win. THAT IS SWAGGER!!

Oh, and, by the way............that Bettis guy? He was pretty good.

I can't speak for whether or not Holtz had any knowledge of the Dunbar stuff, but I can say that, in reference to "the guys Allen Pinkett has stated would not ever get into ND today.", Holtz graduated, and on time, as many of his players as any other coach at ND. Or probably anywhere else, for that matter.

ND has the resources to make sure their players graduate and they use them effectively. still, it doesnt change that he got players he knows he knows couldnt get in to ND today, regardless of anyones ability to get those players graduated.

Holtz left the last 4 schools he coached with some type of issues to clean up, so id be amazed if he never knew what was going on.

Yes, South Carolina was put on probation, for giving a kid more hours with a tutor than the NCAA allows. Heaven forbid that Holtz try to make sure that his football players actually learn? That rat bastard!!

That's cheating. He should have bought him a house. Now that's what I'm talking about. Fair and legal right there.

No, cheating is doing something illegal or unethical, to gain an advantage on the field. I wouldn't categorize helping a kid earn passing grades as illegal, or unethical.

totally 1000% agree mate. Tate is unbelievable!! If he does go to the NFL i hope he doesn't waste his career playing for sum loser team (aka lions 49ers...etc). its tragic what happened to Ishmal so I want Tate to have a Phenom NFL career. all the best mate!!

The violations included impermissible tutoring, participation by ineligible players and illegal summer workouts. it resulted in a 3 year probation for the football program and a cut in scholarships. im sure spurrier appreciated that.

i could discuss what went on at arkansas and minnesota that also resulted in sanctions for the new coaches, but we all get the picture. too bad holtz never stuck around to deal with his own messes.

i credit notre dame for having the institutional control to keep holtz as honest as possible while he was there.

Watching the Oregon v. Oregon State game, and the ticker has ESPN's Heisman Predictor standings. They only show the top 5 names........ no Jimmy Clausen. However, Golden Tate checks in at #5.
